To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

I've read this exact post before

That's happened before. Nobody else seems to notice

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Great, cooked chicken bones can cause mayhem for dogs.

Op I honestly don't think there's much between a KFC and the pre cooked reheated frozen generic pap that Bella Italia peddle, don't give it another thought. It's some kind of ill informed snobbery that's all.

I don't feed my DC KFC or Bella Italia out of choice, but if they had a chicken burger while with another family who were doing me a favour the only thing I would do is thank them and offer to cover the cost, or take them somewhere next time.

If she was a strictly organic vegan then maybe should have said so, but otherwise she should be counting her blessings you were kind enough to do her a favour. You reap what you sow, and I'm presuming this will be the first and last time you do.

MabelMaybe · 13/01/2025 15:45

"oh OP, thank you for caring for my child at the last minute and feeding her. You're a star!"

Anything else is rude. You don't look last minute emergency care in the mouth - if your DC is fed and cared for, say thank you.

pooballs · 13/01/2025 15:45

Now I really want a zinger tower box meal with a gravy side

Mnetcurious · 13/01/2025 15:45

She’s got a cheek when you were doing her a favour! Even if she was thinking it, she should not have said it. I was quite precious about no fast food when mine were younger but even being one of those people, I think a one-off at 11 is fine - don’t worry about it!

MrsSunshine2b · 13/01/2025 15:47

If you have strong opinions about what your child eats, you need to voice these before someone else agrees to take care of them, and if you want them parented in the way you would parent, you need to find a professional and pay them appropriately. It's all very well not "liking" a child having fast food, but I assume she also doesn't "like" leaving her child in a hospital waiting room or home alone for hours with nothing at all to eat, so she needs to manage her expectations.

The next time she needs emergency childcare she can shove it up her arse.

I’d be inclined to follow this sage advice.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/01/2025 15:48

KFC to me is probably the dirtiest of takeaways, in the best way (only beaten by the doner kebab). If I'm going to eat calorific food, full of god knows what, I prefer it's honest about that.
I used to work in a Bella Italia when it was Bella pasta, to be fair we made the pizza dough (from a dry packet mix we added water to) and stretched it into round tins and they had this conveyor pizza oven that was fascinating to 18 year old me, the sauce came in prepared but the rest is just cheese, and fresh ingredients mainly. The pasta is basically microwave meals full of sugar though.
The mum shouldn't have said anything.

mumofoneDS · 13/01/2025 15:48

So rude considering you just did her a favour for an emergency!

Youtookmyhandle · 13/01/2025 15:48

New friend would quickly become an ex-friend.

How rude! I always send money with mine for an outing because I don't want to take for granted that the other parents will invite my DC. And even worse, she was not happy with where you took her child that you had as a favour! What an unpleasant person! And poor girl to live with a mother so neurotic and orthorexic that she thinks eating at KFC once is a problem. Don't do any more favours for that ungrateful and displeasant mum!!!

Your post is unpleasant. Just because she is mindful of what her Daughter eats, is no reason to call her names.

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Literally nobody gives a rats ass what you would or wouldn't do so bore off.

AllTheChaos · 13/01/2025 15:49

Feelingstrange2 · 13/01/2025 15:00

You did all the right things.

Some parents just don't get it!

Chances are she'd bring a child up, stressing over no fast food ever and at the first opportunity her daughter will fall across the threshold at 2am half cut and holding a half eaten doner kebab with extra chilli sauce!

Edited

This was me! My poor mum was horrified 😂

DreamingofGinoclock · 13/01/2025 15:51

This is crazy ....she could have chosen something similar to KFC from Bella Italia ... The larger children's meal (although at 11 I'm guessing on cusp of moving to adult meals) had chicken crunchies and chips... basically KFC 🤣....just because it's table service doesn't make it more healthier than KFC 🤣 (obviously depending on what meal is had)

susiedaisy1912 · 13/01/2025 15:52

What a CF she is. Does she not realise that any big chain restaurant is mostly preprepared fast food with loads of salt fat and sugar in it.

MrsSunshine2b · 13/01/2025 15:52

Beautifulbouquet · 13/01/2025 15:36

KfC isn't really food in my opinion (a meal there contains a lot of harmful substances and doesn't provide the nutrition the body needs). I really can understand her blurting this out.

But as a one off it isn't really going to make any difference.

I hope she was just a bit shocked and blurted this out without meaning to be ungrateful.

You haven't done anything bad!! But there are quite a few people who totally avoid these sorts of places because of the animal welfare, business ethics, nutritional harm etc so it's not really a neutral alternative.

Of course it's food. It's mostly MSG, which is naturally occurring in tomatoes, chicken, and salt. We need salt and fat to survive. Most people eat too much salt and fat, that doesn't mean that salt and fat are poisonous.

TypingoftheDead · 13/01/2025 15:53

I think it’s fine, especially as it’s a one off (or might be occasional, if friend asks you for help again).

arcticpandas · 13/01/2025 15:53

LadyKenya · 13/01/2025 15:48

Your post is unpleasant. Just because she is mindful of what her Daughter eats, is no reason to call her names.

I am mindful of what my children eat. I am also very greatful when somebody takes my DC out, especially if I needed emergency childcare. I would have thanked the OP profusely, offered her money to cover the expense and I would have brought her a little gift. I would not be rude and try to make OP feel bad for her choice of restaurant (especially since the other one was closed!)

Delphiniumandlupins · 13/01/2025 15:53

You did nothing wrong. She ought to be grateful to you but maybe she was feeling a bit stressed. Don't overthink it. Your plans had to change and you fed the child. If she never has fast food one KFC meal in 11 years isn't going to do any harm.

VelvetFuzzy · 13/01/2025 15:55

You didn't do anything wrong. It was one meal for an 11 year old not a whole week of fast food for a toddler. Don't worry about it.

SouthLondonMum22 · 13/01/2025 15:55

You did nothing wrong but then my 2 year old loves a KFC very occasionally so clearly, I'm nothing like your friend.

How ungrateful. I'd never do her a favour again.

Waterboatlass · 13/01/2025 15:58

Extremely rude of her to say anything but 'thank you very much'. Obv KFC isn't health food but it's a one off and manners are more important in this instance, you're not paid childcare.

NWQM · 13/01/2025 15:58

Another 'vote' here for saying don't worry about it. You made a plan but it couldn't happen. She was abit thoughtless to worry about where and not simply say thanks

mitogoshigg · 13/01/2025 15:59

Pure snobbery, pizza express and Nando's is no better for you than Pizza Hut or kfc but you would think that you were poisoning kids in some circles. She's lucky you helped her out, Bella Italia and s hardly gourmet

BarbaraHoward · 13/01/2025 15:59

This is exactly what fast food is for imo, when you're caught out for whatever reason or in a rush. Or even <gasp> as am occasional treat. You did her a huge favour.
