Critics flag ‘worrying trend’ of keeping royal files under lock and key as thousands set for release to public

This should be interesting. A big cover up again, no doubt.

The public have a right to know. Too much secrecy.

Fears grow over censorship of secret Queen Elizabeth and Philip papers

Put your tinfoil hat away. Everyone can see your reply.

Not at the point of posting, but thanks anyway.

All of my posts naming the woman have been deleted though. Not just on this thread, but others too. That’s not tinfoil hattery, just simple fact.

Enough of the country enjoys the pomp and ceremony to justify their relatively small cost

It's not small.

And pomp and ceremony would still be there without the Royal Family. Nothing would change.

You could hardly have a royal wedding or a coronation or whatever without a head in the jewellery!

It's something like £1.50 per person. Even if it's the 'six times more' as claimed (it's not) then that's a tenner. They have a net economic benefit and on the whole the UK likes them being there.

Anyway I still think they're entitled to privacy.

Apart from they’re on this thread.

They’re all visible in this thread now.

It’s disgraceful that these grifters can effectively muzzle the press about things that are in the public interest.

I’m not bothered about Philip’s girlfriend unless she had access to public funds or posed a national security threat which seems unlikely, in fairness. That’s small fry. Same as William’s side pieces, I could not care less about them unless there is a financial or security aspect. I suppose the intelligence service is abreast of it all anyway 🤷‍♀️

Nope, there are more serious things hidden in those papers than who is shagging whom.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 11/01/2025 21:01

I think they should be allowed secrets. They're only human. Many of them work bloody hard and didn't choose their lifestyle. I wouldn't want to be in their positions that's for sure! They're welcome to my few quid a year, a million times better than the alternative eg France.

But they do choose the lifestyle. They can leave but it would mean giving up the privilege and the money.

SuperNovajovic · 11/01/2025 21:37

I used to work in the team which reviewed these records and discussed with the Royal Household our recommendations for opening them (often refused). Most of it is such trite, incredibly dull stuff, nothing like the conspiracy that their closure suggests... But flip side of the coin arguably much that isn't that justified under the cited exemption either...

pelargoniums · 11/01/2025 21:37

Just to set out my stall, I’m definitely more interested in all their shagging than the boring stuff.

Tomatotater · 11/01/2025 21:37

Surely the secret can't be about Penelope Knatchbull. He 'retired' and went off to live with her, then she was the only non Royal at his funeral. Hardly a well kept secret!
I think he has other children that were beneficiaries of his will.

It went straight into greyed out “comment under review” when I hit post, and then appeared properly just after my follow up post. I’ve never had that happen before. But have also had a post deleted on another thread this evening (an extreme rarity) so maybe the MN mod on duty tonight just doesn’t like me 😅

Yeah, that's why I thought it's more likely to be a bot. Human mod wouldn't have reacted that quickly. Then a human mod saw it, and cleared it.

ARainyNightInSoho · 11/01/2025 21:37

I am not in the least bothered at all who has affairs with who in the royal family. What bothers me is the censorship. My hidden posts have now been in unhidden. It’s a fact that they were initially hidden though.

No it wouldn't! They're all very rich privately. They'd have to give up their security detail, that's about it!

Yeah I think a bot has hidden a certain name but that other versions of her name have got through. So e.g. Milly Smith gets picked up but not Millicent Smith.

As you say, the censorship of the press is problematic.

That’s not a dig at MN. They must cover themselves.

@Extiainoiapeial "The public have a right to know. Too much secrecy."
why do the public have a right to know the affairs of the royals other than what books are officially written about them ?

Because they are public servants?

Hotflushesandchilblains · 11/01/2025 21:42

To the PP who said most of their wealth is private - the Dispatches documentary on the Duchies is an eye opening watch!

Tomatotater · 11/01/2025 21:43

SerendipityJane · 11/01/2025 21:16

The bulk of their wealth is ancient and nothing to do with the public.

Really it was stolen from us by Norman invaders by very real violence. Maybe the idea of reparations needs to go back further ....

Much of it was also stolen during Empire. Much closer in time. Koh I Noor diamond anyone, where a child was 'persuaded' to give a present to the Empress of India-Queen Victoria!

ARainyNightInSoho · 11/01/2025 21:43

@Tomatotater yes I think you might be right that the RF are perhaps protecting PPs children rather than any woman he might or might not have been having a relationship with. And actually protecting children through censorship is fair enough,

Extiainoiapeial · 11/01/2025 21:44

Anyway I still think they're entitled to privacy.

More than the great British public they rule over?
Why?

I'm really shocked that people are accusing Penny of an affair with the DofE. She was a great friend and fellow carriage driver. Where's your evidence of anything more?

I mean the man was in his 90's by the time he died, so his children would be in their 60's but yes, they are presumably ( wealthy) private citizens, so its unfair that they suddenly have their names in the papers and press camped outside their door.
