I've got the lurgy (unspecified variety, temp, throat, cough, aches etc). Wrestled with it a week but ended up seeing GP yesterday as I now have a chest infection (wonderful 🙄). Get your tiny violins out, people. 🎻

GP told me that 20% of the population is ill at the moment. TWENTY!!!!!!??????? That's millions of us. I'm staggered.

AIBU to ask : Are you one of the 20% ?

vote YANBU (YES I AM ILL) for ‘YES I am bloody ill. Thanks for asking, What a great way to start the new year’ Sending lemsip, turmeric and ginger remedies to all of you.

vote YABU (NO I’m NOT ILL). for ‘I’m perfectly fine thank you. Pah, doctors what do they know, and how on earth did you get a GP appointment so quickly?’

Happy new year Vipers one and all.

edited to clarify the voting options.

Yes. Day 15 of it here. Finally saw Dr yesterday who said viral chest infection/flu, and antibiotics can't help.

rosiethegremlin · 11/01/2025 07:30

Not at the moment, and haven't been yet this year. Although I've had my flu jab, so should be protected from the worst of that.

Magamaga · 11/01/2025 07:30

No. One of my children has had a slight temp this week. So that’s 25% of our household. I would would say she ia under the weather rather than ill.

At this time of the year I would expect lots of people to be ill.

Igmum · 11/01/2025 07:31

YES

Been ill since December 7th and this morning have gone down with a temperature and an ear infection. I'm not over the rest yet 🤦‍♀️

Mounjarry · 11/01/2025 07:32

No, we all had it over Christmas though as did lots of people i work with and know. Sometimes different areas have different 'waves', every decade or so we have a winter with unusually high levels of savage viruses like this. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Gah, that’s rubbish, I’m sorry. I’ve coughed so much that I’ve pulled all my chest muscles too 😷🥺

No, I was ill before Xmas so hopefully that’s my only dose of it. But I always have a flu jab as I work with little germ spreaders!

ooooohnoooooo · 11/01/2025 07:37

And to add insult to injury I just got up to feed the cats and make a drink (so much effort). Have crawled back to bed only to realise that I’ve got cat food on my fingers and it stinks 🤢 Will have to get up again or will get gently gnawed my marauding kitties. 🐈‍⬛

Pass the tiny violin over.
I'm sick too- had a cold that's gone on my chest and now on antibiotics. So that's 33.3% of our household ill.

DeathMetalMum · 11/01/2025 07:37

Locally before christmas everyone was coming down with a cold/flu thing which was flooring a lot of people. This week local school had outbreak of chicken pox, so many off school at the moment.

Potatoewithawonkyeye · 11/01/2025 07:38

10th of December was the last time I ate a solid meal. Doctor says viral so no antibiotics same as pp. Please for the love of God and every other diety when will this end?! I have a friend in hospital who says it INUNDATED with flu...no visitor's allowed. Everyone I know has been so unwell!

Vannymcvan · 11/01/2025 07:38

Had cough/cold over Christmas. I'd say your GP is right. Anyone with cough/cold can get advice from the pharmacy. Pharmacies can also prescribe antibiotics for tonsillitis. Google Pharmacy First for the full list of conditions your local pharmacist can treat. Might help someone!

sorrynotathome · 11/01/2025 07:39

GP probably meant that 20% of the people s/he saw that day were ill. The rest were all the other things they have to deal with…

Was ill since 27th December, saw Dr this week due to coughing up blood, chest infection given antibiotics and steroids and have vastly improved to feeling mostly better today

ooooohnoooooo · 11/01/2025 07:42

@sorry it was deffo 20% of population. I was staggered.

Not yet but I've had a bit of a sore throat and feel a bit coldly. I'm hoping it doesn't develop into anything nasty and suspect it won't as these horrible viruses seem to be hitting quite suddenly.

ooooohnoooooo · 11/01/2025 07:43

@Potatoewithawonkyeye that sounds grim. Hope you turn a corner soon x

LaPalmaLlama · 11/01/2025 07:44

Kind of- I’m coughing up a bit of green crap
so obviously got something but “I feel alright in myself” as my Nan would say. Conversely, in October I had a horrific cold/ cough that went on for weeks.

myplace · 11/01/2025 07:46

I feel bad now because I voted yea, but certainly can’t compare with everyone else! I have been fighting off a cold for ages and I think I’m losing the battle. The sore throat is getting really irritating with occasional choking/coughing/spluttering fits.

And a fibro flare from defrosting the car has left me stiff and achey. Hey ho. All very minor but I’d love to feel a bit better!

GuineaPigWig · 11/01/2025 07:49

This thread will cause selection bias on the voting but…

apparently there may be a quademic apparently. From NHS England:

NHS fears of a potential ‘quad-demic’ are rising with a 350% increase in flu cases and an 86% rise in norovirus cases in hospital compared to same week last year – alongside concerns about rising COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)c levels in hospitals.

Get well soon all you lurgy-faces!

MintSass · 11/01/2025 07:51

I’ve managed to avoid it so far, I’m probably the only one in my immediate circle that hasn’t had it so far. I’m sick of the sight of my husband’s dressing gown of doom, the poor bloke 😂
I shan’t get cocky about it though, as early March is when my hayfever starts to kick in so I’ll be a snotty mess from then until September.

I think working in GP surgeries and hospitals helps me build up a quite a good immunity to all the lergies. Also, I swear by maximum strength vitamin c & zinc.

The acute medicine and respiratory wards at our local hospitals are jam packed with flu cases at the moment. Critical incidents declared and a huge amount of antivirals and antibiotics being prescribed.

Get well soon, OP!

XWKD · 11/01/2025 07:53

I've been sick since Christmas Day. I have an unending chest infection. It is improving slowly.

MissHavershamReturns · 11/01/2025 07:54

I am not ill so I have voted YABU but 50% of my household has been ill this week. So 25% doesn’t sound unlikely to me!

WongKarWhy · 11/01/2025 07:56

Yes. I have something flu-like going on. Started just after Christmas. Couldn’t get out of bed for a week. I’m up and about now, but experiencing fever and chills, sore throat, headache, sinus issues. The local hospital was recently closed or visitors because of eye amount of flu cases they’re seeing too.
