A POLL Are you one of the 20% who are ill at the moment ?

I've got the lurgy (unspecified variety, temp, throat, cough, aches etc). Wrestled with it a week but ended up seeing GP yesterday as I now have a chest infection (wonderful 🙄). Get your tiny violins out, people. 🎻

GP told me that 20% of the population is ill at the moment. TWENTY!!!!!!??????? That's millions of us. I'm staggered.

AIBU to ask : Are you one of the 20% ?

vote YANBU (YES I AM ILL) for ‘YES I am bloody ill. Thanks for asking, What a great way to start the new year’ Sending lemsip, turmeric and ginger remedies to all of you.

vote YABU (NO I’m NOT ILL). for ‘I’m perfectly fine thank you. Pah, doctors what do they know, and how on earth did you get a GP appointment so quickly?’

Happy new year Vipers one and all.

edited to clarify the voting options.

No I am one of the 80% who aren't ill, yet !

Haven't had my flu jab, been in close contact with people with all the various current illnesses, so Flu, Covid, RSV etc so its probably just a matter of time before I succumb to something.

NewYearNewDietAgain · 11/01/2025 08:20

I was ill through most of Jan/feb/march last year so hoping that's my lot for now! I work in a shop and the medicine section is regularly wiped out or very very low of cold/flu meds! Worst I've ever seen it!

anon2022anon · 11/01/2025 08:20

I'm on about week 3/ 4 of a horrible barking cough. Nurse practitioner said it's viral, no antibiotics. It got worse at the beginning of this week, so I probably should go back to doctors, but I've coughed slightly less this morning so hopefully it's going.

Partner has had the flu, turned into a chest infection, turned into mild pneumonia. He got rid of that in December, but is now sneezing, snotty and inflamed throat. He works partly outdoors, so it's been a rough week in this weather.

stayathomer · 11/01/2025 08:21

In Ireland so no help but it honestly feels like our family is the only one who hasn’t been battered health wise this year. Last year two of my kids missed three weeks in autumn with chest infections and throat infections and most years we have something that keeps someone out or hits us so it’s so unusual but EVERYONE I talk to had a miserable December/ Christmas or has been in bed over a week etc etc. I work at a checkout and similar story there too.

SailingYachty · 11/01/2025 08:22

Not ill right now but we were all ill over Christmas with what felt like flu (fever, aches, cough etc).

Snowkitty · 11/01/2025 08:23

I'm rarely ill and haven't had anything yet this winter (fingers crossed). Even after being at a couple of big events with hundreds of others in close proximity recently I managed to come away unscathed.

But I know an awful lot of people who have including a couple of friends who have been poorly for weeks and can't shake it off. So actually yes I think 20% might be not so crazy a number especially if you're counting all the people who picked something up yesterday and don't know it yet and those who are recovering but still 'not quite firing on all 4'

Arlanymor · 11/01/2025 08:23

Yes - day 14 here but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve got my poetry group this morning so am going to bundle myself up and get the bus there (it’s uphill, raining and I’m not a martyr!) and then walk home (slowly) once it’s finished. If I can do all that then a couple more sleeps and I’ll be on the home straight. Sending vibes to all crackly chest people - it’s horrible, I know.

BountifulPantry · 11/01/2025 08:26

I was sick before Xmas for 2.5 weeks.

I even had my flu jab! So one of the worst symptoms was indignation- I kept shuffling into the kitchen for a lemsip saying « but I had my flu jab » for the 40th time.

endsnewyearsday · 11/01/2025 08:28

Not quite but I'm only just over it after catching it xmas eve. DH and DS plus my DF also caught it that day from two other family members who turned up with it so I'm not surprised to hear that 20% figure.

Kamek · 11/01/2025 08:28

I've not been ill since last winter, despite having primary school DC, and this is the first year that's ever happened. The only thing that's changed is I've been taking multivitamins and a high strength Vitamin D spray daily for months so I'm assuming that's why. Another bonus is I'm not tired anymore too! Before this I had multiple colds per year

YouCanKeepHimJolene · 11/01/2025 08:30

Had it just before Xmas. The cold was sudden and violent, the worst I've had in years (not Covid) and it took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear the chest infection. It's been rife here for several weeks now. The staff in my local gp surgeries are wearing full ppe atm.

Theemperorsnewshoes · 11/01/2025 08:32

I’m fine but my family were all (DH, DC, DF) really unwell before Christmas, they had d and v , flu like symptoms and then covid.

My wings are like a shield of steel.

JanuaryCrow · 11/01/2025 08:32

Wow. 46% of MNers who responded to your survey are unwell, OP.

As am I. I've had all the jabs as well. I think I might have long covid tbh. So fatigued.

yomellamoHelly · 11/01/2025 08:34

We're all ill in our house. And it keeps changing. Snotty, then splitting headache and knackered, then temperature and sinus pain, then hacking cough (current issue for me),.... Dd back to the snotty and hoarse voice stage.

mondaytosunday · 11/01/2025 08:35

I don't have voting but no I am not ill. Neither are my (adult) kids. In fact of the dozen or so people I know well enough to know if they are sick only one is ill (and she's actually recovering having had whatever it is over Christmas and is back working with a slight cough).

Lindy2 · 11/01/2025 08:35

No we had it go throughout house in December.

Practically the entire college where DD goes were sick. I've never seen her so ill. Literally bedridden and needing help to walk a few steps to the bathroom. Wiped out for over 2 weeks.

Me a rough cold for about 10 days. The worst I've had since I had Covid before the vaccinations were available. I had the flu vaccination and I think that helped a bit.

DH - very poorly. He actually collapsed and needed emergency medical assistance. Wiped out for over 2 weeks.

Youngest DD has the most efficient immune system in the world. She sneezed a couple of times.

ooooohnoooooo · 11/01/2025 08:36

@JanuaryCrow its a big number but not exactly a scientific study 😂

I’ve had all the jabs too. My previous bouts of Covid took months and months to shift. I hope you start to turn a corner soon.

Bloody hell @Lindy2 that sounds dreadful. But at least you have one daughter to wait on you hand and foot at all times 😬😂

I think the results of this poll will be slightly skewed as people will really only respond if they are ill.

It depends on if you mean with cough/cold/flu like symptoms or if ' ill' includes everything.

I have developed IBS through stress and anxiety in the last year, but I don't know if that's in the 20% total?

BMW6 · 11/01/2025 08:40

I wouldn't be at all surprised if 20% of the population have it.

I am one of 5 siblings, all in seperate homes all over the country and we all have had it at some point from beginning of December till now.

edwinbear · 11/01/2025 08:41

Me and the 2 DC are fine and not been ill at all (we’ve had our flu jabs), DH was ill over Christmas and hasn’t.

The cat has lost her voice though - she squeaks when she tries to meow. She has not had her flu jab either!

usernother · 11/01/2025 08:41

Yes, I've had a mild cold and cough since the middle of December. Also had Novo virus on top of this a few weeks ago.

Bessica1970 · 11/01/2025 08:42

There’s a lot of illness around but I think your doctor is talking BS.

our 1200 secondary school had 93% attendance yesterday which is normal for us. I would have expected that to be lots lower if 20% of people were ill.

MoonlightMemories · 11/01/2025 08:42

I've had 2 episodes of bronchitis and a horrible viral sinus infection in the space of a month or so Still coughing an awful lot at times from the 2nd episode of bronchitis and feeling a bit tired/short of breath and got a really hoarse voice from the trauma it's caused to my poor throat.

It really is crazy just how much respiratory stuff ther is going around right now - it's absolutely everywhere.

CautiousLurker01 · 11/01/2025 08:49

Not with the cold, but been up all night visiting the loo and fighting a deep urge to vom everywhere, so think I am fighting off the noro? It’s my birthday today too.
