I've got the lurgy (unspecified variety, temp, throat, cough, aches etc). Wrestled with it a week but ended up seeing GP yesterday as I now have a chest infection (wonderful 🙄). Get your tiny violins out, people. 🎻

GP told me that 20% of the population is ill at the moment. TWENTY!!!!!!??????? That's millions of us. I'm staggered.

AIBU to ask : Are you one of the 20% ?

vote YANBU (YES I AM ILL) for ‘YES I am bloody ill. Thanks for asking, What a great way to start the new year’ Sending lemsip, turmeric and ginger remedies to all of you.

vote YABU (NO I’m NOT ILL). for ‘I’m perfectly fine thank you. Pah, doctors what do they know, and how on earth did you get a GP appointment so quickly?’

Happy new year Vipers one and all.

edited to clarify the voting options.

I’ve not been unwell but I’ve been working at the hospital dealing with it all! I hope everyone gets better soon. It is a very bad year.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 11/01/2025 07:57

Yes, on week two. Probably flu I guess, only one DD got away with it here, rest of us are zombieing our way around since NYE. Poor DH developed pneumonia and then also discovered that the very strong antibiotics for that also make him ill. Poor sod.

BobnLen · 11/01/2025 07:59

I'm not thankfully as DH had a horrible cold virus about a week ago, fortunately I seem to have escaped it.

tilypu · 11/01/2025 07:59

Not really sure how to answer tbh. I've got a lingering cough after having been ill, but I feel completely fine, so I'm not sure that I'm actually ill - just asthmatic so it can take me longer for the cough to go...

DominoRules · 11/01/2025 08:00

We all have it, DH first mid December then rest of us a week at a time….. I started over Christmas and felt awful for about 10 days, mostly ok now but still a residual cough and a bit tired

Mymanyellow · 11/01/2025 08:01

I’m alright thanks 😀 trying not to go near anyone at the minute though it’s everywhere.
At least 20% are off at work.
My dr once told me ‘everyone I see is ill’ I thought well yeah they would be you being a dr and all.
Hope you all feel better soon. Roll on summer.

randomchap · 11/01/2025 08:03

Yep. I've been ill with rsv. Sounds bad but basically the common cold in healthy adults. My mum was hospitalised with it as it caused pneumonia.

We called 111, told to take her to a&e. She waited over 24 hours to get a bed on the Acute ward. After 10 days on oxygen and loads of antibiotics for the secondary infections she was let out yesterday.

The hospital was just full of respiratory patients but the staff were all lovely, kind, and professional. The care was excellent. She even enjoyed the hospital food once she could eat again.

Numberwangggg · 11/01/2025 08:04

Yes I’ve got it too, had it for about two weeks. Got antibiotics after about a week which helped but still feeling quite viral and bunged up.

Spanielsaremad · 11/01/2025 08:05

No. I've not had it and don't know anyone that's had it either.

Stormyseasallround · 11/01/2025 08:06

Day three of some horrible fluey type thing for me - boiling hot then freezing cold, aching all over, feel sick, snotty nose… I should at least lose some weight as haven’t eaten since Thursday morning!

Astrabees · 11/01/2025 08:06

None of my family are unwell at the moment. Last year we all had COVID straight after Christmas, so maybe it is our turn not to be ill.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 11/01/2025 08:07

Yup. Had to visit an acute hospital ward this week for work, with a bay of flu patients, and now feel pretty grim. Hoping it's a coincidence and that I have a nasty cold rather than flu proper. Quite achy, temperature, and a cough. Going to spend the weekend in bed in the hope of being work fit by Monday, but won't kill myself to go in if I'm not.

Thanks @Muffinmissedhernap and to all the brilliant people keeping the lights switched on whilst the rest of us shuffle about in the dresssing gown of doom/stylish cashmere lounge trousers of recovery / snot covered old jammies of resignation *

Came down with a respiratory thing on Thursday afternoon. Chest had felt right for a few days. Now clammy and shivery and feel dreadful. Paracetamol is managing my temp. I have to too much to do to be ill, but know I have form for trying to power through and making myself worse.

Potatowonkeyes · 11/01/2025 08:09

I know this was published during the covid pandemic....but is there anyone on here more informed than me that can say if there is any correlation? Has 'flu' hit everyone harder the last few years as our immune systems aren't privy to it as much? I hope I've made sense 😅

A POLL Are you one of the 20% who are ill at the moment ?
nether · 11/01/2025 08:10

No

There Is a CEV person in the household so we wear masks on public transport and indoors public places. It’s great - people assume we’re the irresponsible infectious ones and do their best to keep away and never mind us opening windows for better ventilation

Really, really hope that the precautions continue to pay off

atesomanybananas · 11/01/2025 08:10

Woke up today with sore throat, headache from hell and aches. DH has been ill for a week (second time for him in the last 3 months). Not a happy bunny (but have had the flu jab so am hoping that’ll help).

Willoo · 11/01/2025 08:10

No. I never get ill. I haven’t had a cold in years

Georgieporgie29 · 11/01/2025 08:12

DH has had the horrible barking cough for 2 weeks and I have just started with it yayy!

I also had the horrible cold just before Christmas.

So that’s 50% of our household currently ill. Sending sympathy to everyone else that’s suffering.

nether · 11/01/2025 08:13

BTW, covid is really good at dampening your immune system (better than other viruses) and the effects last months (possibly years) so if you’re catching covid twice a year, then yes your immune system will not be what it was before and you catch stuff more readily and get it a bit worse. For the individual that’s annoying, but the cumulative effect at a population on the economy and health services isn’t good.

ooooohnoooooo · 11/01/2025 08:13

@Willoo what’s your secret? My sis is the same and I’ve never understood it.

Not ill currently but managed to get some horrible virus at the end of November, sweats, headaches, snot and inflamed lungs which died down and then rebounded into a worse illness in December with lovely additions of exhaustion, shortness of breath and a cough. Took antibiotics, which worked - NHS refused the antibiotics so had to go through a private GP!

Wishing lemsip and wellness for all.

NotMeNoNo · 11/01/2025 08:14

I'm not ill now but had two colds already this winter which is rare as I don't normally catch bugs.
Two of my small team at work are off though.

Polkadotbabushka · 11/01/2025 08:14

It’s that time of year. It’s cold. Kids are back at school spreading germs and we’ve all been socialising a lot! So it’s inevitable. My husband has cough and cold, son has tail end of cough and I’m fine.
