I saw something on tiktok today that said 'Carrie was to Big what Janice was to Chandler' 👀👀😬

I rewatch it all the time tbh, it's my fave show but now that Gen Z have found it, there are a lot of hot takes available online

What do people think of Carrie, now that 20 years have passed? Who's your fave? x

@mumofoneAlonebutokay It really did help. Total escapism.

cluefu · 10/01/2025 21:44

I have so much love and affection for it. I also appreciate the huge flaws in it and particularly some horrendous treatment of race, bisexuality and trans-issues. But I think what it set out to do and delivered on was really good and important for women. I don't include the films on my assessment and I really hate how they made Carrie so schmaltzy in the end. But I love it.

StMarie4me · 10/01/2025 21:44

Awful.

I think it was a pile of shite then and is still a pile of shite now.

never a truer worde said 😉

She was awful - when she forced Charlotte to sell her ring from her marriage to trey (which I've just learned is the name given to the third generation of the original man, ie great grandson)

I don't like Carrie but she absolutely did not force the sale of the ring. If that's what you got from that beautifully scripted episode, I don't know what to say. 🤦🏽‍♀️

it's of it's time. But it was well scripted, realistic in the portrayal it was going for, and I worked in NY for the last two seasons and saw the odd scene being filmed. The writers said they were going for the city as a character and they did that really well.

People used to gather in bars to watch the latest episode on a big screen. It really is excellent writing in sitcom land. They were always careful about balancing upsetting things with humour and they did that so well.

whenever I see threads about TV shows, I think I should start a duplicate thread on the Creative Writing section here (but in reality I should spend less time here!) I think those takes would be really interesting. The characters are so well crafted.

Eldermillenialyogi · 10/01/2025 21:46

No I don't think she was Big's Janice as he married her

I liked it. Without considering how realistic it was or dissecting the characters or themes it was a really good tv show. I could watch the whole thing again.

momtoboys · 10/01/2025 21:48

I just love it. I will admit to having an embarrassingly over the top crush on Big. I think I loved it so much because I feel like my friends and I lived through each one of those life adventures but with way smaller apartments and not nearly the amount of funky clothes! I LOVED the first movie.

Watching it again, I can see some of the issues that people have with it, but I still don't care. :)

PinotPony · 10/01/2025 21:48

I loved it at the time. But now, watching it again, I can’t bear how self-absorbed Carrie is. She’s just awful.

I watched AJLT but found it unbearable. I hated every character with the exception of Salma.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 10/01/2025 21:49

I liked it at the time, it was pretty out there in terms of a mainstream show where women openly discussed their sex lives. The original series definitely had some funny moments. Loved Samantha, Carrie not so much.

Unfortunately, the movies were a shitshow - I remember dragging an ex boyfriend to the first one haha..

The second one was godawful.

Here's a brilliant take down of how bad the second movie was:

That is brilliant.

Crucible · 10/01/2025 21:58

I remember series one being quite funny, it had actual jokes and funny scenes. That was about it. A mildly funny TV show.
The only remotely realistic woman was Miranda, the rest caricatures. It just seemed that women I knew lost the plot trying to 'identify' with the characters (girl groups deciding who was the groups Samantha FFS). Utter nonsense. Carrie was absolutely bloody awful.
I remember a New York journalist who said it was so hopelessly unrealistic, a woman then would get asked out maybe once a year, and other than that it was just work work work. She tore it to bits.
An actual date was an event, and very rare. In the show men are coming along like buses.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 10/01/2025 22:01

unlikelywitch · 10/01/2025 21:42

I love it (not AJLT) and still rewatch it because but a lot of it’s cringe.

Carrie’s a self-absorbed pain in the arse. She forced her relationship with Big; romanticising it and making it seem like something it wasn’t. I don’t think it was realistic that they ended up together.

Pretty much all of the sex scenes and even the discussions about sex felt like parody.

It was very obvious when SJP became the producer she made every effort to make Sam (and Kim Catrall) a ridiculous caricature.

Aiden gives me the boak.

Despite all of this, I still find it very watchable. There are some lovely, funny moments and of course the fashion. It makes me feel nostalgic for a place I’ve never been.

The fashion has literally made me interested in fashion 🤭

Aiden was cringe and just not a match for carrie - too 'granola'

Do you know, I didn't know she was a producer. But something tells me it was around season 5 when carrie got that shit bob and became weird and judgy

Oh damn - once I've lost weight I plan to date like the girls 😄😄

I'll read it, although agree, film 2 was so bad

I like salma too although she's a poor Samantha replacement

But I wonder what Samantha would really be doing now? I feel like she'd be like Pamela Anderson, just being ethereal and make up free

Absolutely Hated it ‘back in the day’ when everyone else seemed to think it was essential viewing - would hate it even more now vacuous squealing over ‘shoes’ utter trash

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 10/01/2025 22:08

I absolutely loved SATC. I used to watch the box sets all the time 2003 ish.

I had just graduated and moved to another city for a training contract. I was in a long distance relationship with my uni boyfriend and I was really missing my friends. I was also working really, really hard.

That was my evening... a few episodes of SATC... a lonely girl watching a show about friendship!!

I did make new friends and get a life but for a few months SATC was quite a thing for me.

Obviously I think Samantha was the best character.

tothelefttotheleft · 10/01/2025 22:08

You don't think Carrie got Charlotte to give her that money?

I love it but the second film is the worst film that has ever been made.

Saveusernames · 10/01/2025 22:12

Was it about friendship tho? Were they supportive of each other - or did they all just meet up to discharge on each other about their sex/romantic lives?

Did they ever have fun and frolics as friends where they were not preoccupied with the men in their lives?

Gowlett · 10/01/2025 22:12

Loved it at the time.

Went out with loads of men.
Having a boyfriend was of no interest.

Lived in London & Paris.

Spent money on shoes & frocks.
And lots of cocktails!

It was great fun, I suppose…
Helped me feel less Bridget Jones.

But, Carrie & BIG getting married?
That was never a happy ever after, to me!
