I saw something on tiktok today that said 'Carrie was to Big what Janice was to Chandler' 👀👀😬

I rewatch it all the time tbh, it's my fave show but now that Gen Z have found it, there are a lot of hot takes available online

What do people think of Carrie, now that 20 years have passed? Who's your fave? x

Loved the series at the time, liked the first movie, hated the second. On reflection Carrie's self centredness was astonishing.
Now watch ajlt out of curiosity
Hate what they have done to Miranda who was always my favourite.

Carrie is a narcissistic pain in the arse and Big was always honest about who he was.

The clothes could be fabulous.

The first film was ok. The second was beyond horrific.

SJP was clearly jealous and insecure about the superior actor that is Kim C and began to use her role as Exec to undermine the character / actress towards the end of the series and it’s REALLY highlighted in how Sam became a caricature in the 2nd movie.

AJLT is shite without Sam.

Aiden is a controlling creep.

ETA: still watch it though!

Edited

Oh wow, didn't make that connection re sjp being s producer and sabotaging Samantha's character!

I did believe what Kim said that sjp treated her badly though, I can imagine a mean girl vibe

I feel like, yes she's a tomboy, and Cynthia is a lesbian in real life but they didn't need to make miranda a lesbian

Hated che

Loved it at the time it was on, but I was in my teens/early 20s and living a dull life in a rural area, so the idea of going on dinner and cocktail dates with men in Nee York seemed impossibly glamorous and aspirational. Once I’d moved to a city and done a bit of dating I went off the idea 🤣 and these days, older than the characters were, I am very over it. The sequel And Just Like That is terrible.

TwistedWonder · 10/01/2025 21:31

Never got the hype at the time despite being the target audience. Watched a few episodes and thought ‘meh

mitogoshigg · 10/01/2025 21:32

It was of its time, loved it then but hasn't aged well, didn't like the movies

Figgygal · 10/01/2025 21:33

Very much of its time
Still watch it and enjoy it but it's proper cheese - Big was gorgeous though wasnt he

Just like that is terrible but can't help watching

minipie · 10/01/2025 21:34

JenniferBooth · 10/01/2025 21:12

It hasnt aged well............particularly when Miranda gets shamed for simply having pubic hair

So glad someone else noticed this! Made me furious. Steve shagged someone else, oh well it’s probably because you let your pubes grow.

She was awful - when she forced Charlotte to sell her ring from her marriage to trey (which I've just learned is the name given to the third generation of the original man, ie great grandson)

(There’s a World’s Strongest Man contestant called Trey Mitchell III. Do you reckon they went through the generations again? 👀)

Anyway - enjoyed SATC at the time as a bit of fluff, but no desire to rewatch after the films and then about two episodes of AJLT.

Hertsmum78 · 10/01/2025 21:35

I thought it was brilliant then, and I still think it is now. Yes, it has dated (as everything does) but brilliant writing only dates so much. Yes it is about privileged women but it also contains a lot of relatable truth.

disagree about Carrie not being the love of Big’s life. She was. He was just selfish and arrogant so it took him a while to realise. Aidan was and is awful and wrong for her, and he’s one of many things that is wrong with the terrible reboot.

Pleaseletmegohome · 10/01/2025 21:35

I like Lisa, Seema and Anthony in AJLT.

Kirsten Davies has forgotten how to act (and it’s nothing to do with the filler). The character of Miranda is now awful and her sex scenes (especially her solo) made me cringe. They’ve destroyed Steve and Harry.

Aiden seriously gives me the creeps and I don’t believe in the relationship at all. Sam would have slapped sense into Carrie about it.

I bought the boxset in 2007 and watched all the seasons back to back. My Ex left me, and I was in a dark place. Samantha was my favorite character.

Never seen the carrie diaries, is it based on her when she was younger though?

Im the same tbh, definitely the product of romcoms as I also expect someone like big 🤭

He'd have to want me though

The Carrie diaries is much, much better.

i never got satc, bunch of whinging whining women. Nothing was ever good enough for them

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 10/01/2025 21:38

I've been thinking that Steve to miranda was carrie to big (if you think that big didn't really want csrrie)

She settled for him and that's why they're divorced in ajlt - I thought she'd be better with another lawyer as that seemed important to her

It's my guilty pleasure. It's basically ridiculous and I have never moved in circles where people sleep around like that, so I find that peice fascinating
I identify most with Charlotte. I'm an adoptive mum too. My favorite character is Samantha. I love how strong and true to herself she is. She just does exactly what she wants to do. But she's also loving and loyal to her friends.

Aww, hope it helped you get over your ex

It's helped me as well as I started watching it when I had only me and dd

Loved it then and still do, Samantha was my Queen though-Carrie was just needy and horrible.

Member984815 · 10/01/2025 21:41

Carrie was always such a bad friend , but I watched it when it originally aired and loved it . Samantha was such a great character I loved that they all had flaws and at the heart of it was friendship even if carrie was a bit of a shitty friend

Ponoka7 · 10/01/2025 21:41

I watched it a few times, hoping that it would get better. I was happily single and going through a fuck buddy stage. I was very disappointed that they were chasing marriage and allowing themselves to be treated badly, being shamed into fashionable grooming/sex acts etc. I thought that it was going to mirror mine and my single friends (all 32-38 years old) lives. I didn't understand why people couldn't see the issues in SITC and Friends.

Yeah aiden was never right for her and seems like he wanted to punish her

It was also weird how csrrie was like 'was i wrong about marrying big'. Like huh?

I can't stand Charlotte's kids, they're so so spoiled

I love it (not AJLT) and still rewatch it because but a lot of it’s cringe.

Carrie’s a self-absorbed pain in the arse. She forced her relationship with Big; romanticising it and making it seem like something it wasn’t. I don’t think it was realistic that they ended up together.

Pretty much all of the sex scenes and even the discussions about sex felt like parody.

It was very obvious when SJP became the producer she made every effort to make Sam (and Kim Catrall) a ridiculous caricature.

Aiden gives me the boak.

Despite all of this, I still find it very watchable. There are some lovely, funny moments and of course the fashion. It makes me feel nostalgic for a place I’ve never been.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 10/01/2025 21:43

I found them all incredibly childish, materialistic and needy.

Awful programme.
