I saw something on tiktok today that said 'Carrie was to Big what Janice was to Chandler' 👀👀😬

I rewatch it all the time tbh, it's my fave show but now that Gen Z have found it, there are a lot of hot takes available online

What do people think of Carrie, now that 20 years have passed? Who's your fave? x

Late to this thread but I loved it then and I love it now. The writing is so smart and I love the fact that it really celebrates friendship.

The episode when Miranda's mum dies is really moving.

NorthernGirl1981 · 15/01/2025 09:10

Absolutely loved it!!
Loved the films too!

I was never keen on Miranda but I always had a soft spot for Charlotte.

Needhelp101 · 15/01/2025 09:10

I mostly hate-watched And Just Like That but the scene between Carrie and Natasha in the coffee shop was brilliantly written and acted.

GogAndMagog · 15/01/2025 09:31

@ThePoliteLion
Don't you think Bridget Jones and SATC also reinforces the age old view the women are always looking out for boyfriends? As that's all they talk about!
Apart from Samantha that is.

I spent all my twenties (SATC era ) with women who were always looking for boyfriends. It was exhausting. I never had one til quite later. Then I thought, phew, now I'll fit in. 🙄
I don't feel there is that pressure now.

I loved the clothes, the friendships, loved it when Miranda called out Carrie on occasion.

As for the comparison with Chandler and Janice (I loved Janice, she was unfailingly herself) I always thought Carrie was to Aiden what Big was to Carrie!! She wouldn't commit to him and messed him about big time!

MrsBeesBakedBeans · 15/01/2025 09:35

Loved it, as did my friends, but the new series is a bit cringe for me (I still watch it though, of course).

It didn't always hit the mark but a few good life lessons dotted about here and there. I always think about Miranda and those two girls "he's just not that in to you".

Lottapianos · 15/01/2025 09:35

I agree - it was great. Some aspects of AJLT are beyond awful and I've nearly given up on it more than once, but there are some brilliant moments, the clothes are still spectacular, and overall I think its worth the pain 😁

I rewatched it again fairly recently and I actually think as an examination of grief, it hits the spot.
It's just the rest of it that's shit 😁

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/01/2025 09:58

I haven't watched the new series at all. It would never work for me without Samantha and I am also quite sad to hear how Miranda's arc has gone. I liked that she and Steve gave us a glimpse of a couple actually working on staying together and dealing with real life problems like care of elderly parents.

Guinessandafire · 15/01/2025 10:07

I think the overall message of it gets lost for some that love it.

My work colleagues used to love the ' sexual empowerment' of it all.

For me the message was that none of the four were happy until they realised the reason they were single was that their standards were stupidly high, and their shallow and materialistic taste in men never led to them being happy.

When they started to appreciate the qualities of the likes of Harry and Steve, that's when they found what they were looking for.

I also never forgave Carrie for cheating on Aidan with 'Big'. I think the storyline was well done , because you were genuinely disappointed in her.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/01/2025 09:00

I agree. I never lived there but saw someone there for a while and I got asked out on the street, by barristas, in cafes. I also had female friends there of the same age and the rules of engagement on dating (presuming not exclusive until specifically agreed, very pragmatic deliberations about money, class, shared views etc) as shown in SATC were pretty accurate and generally understood.

I think this partly explains the PUA rubbish that developed later. Obvs it's ok if the people take no for an answer, asking someone out isn't PUA by default! But NY has more of a culture of asking out anytime, anyplace, so the PUA stuff seemed slightly less weird over there. Whereas here men asking random women in the street out seems odd in itself.

Appalonia · 15/01/2025 16:51

ThePoliteLion · 14/01/2025 21:08

I loved the original series then and still love it now. The writing is whip smart. I was either single or with an ill-suited boyfriend when they first aired, and found SATC a great comfort. I felt it validated my own situation (in the same way that the first two Bridget Jones novels made the very single Bridget so loveable and real). I think before SATC and Bridget, the dominant culture told women that they should be happily coupled up…both were so fresh and groundbreaking. I am grateful to SATC for cheering me up. Now I’m in my fifties and see the problems with Carrie/Big, her personality flaws etc…I was always a bit worried that I was like Charlotte. The Bunny McDougal episodes still make me laugh. AJLT - eugh - no thanks - how could they do that to Miranda’s character. Hmm…maybe I’ll watch the boxed set again…as comforting as a jacket potato with grated cheese. Loving this thread and thank you to the PP for the You Tube recommendation. The Sentimental Garbage podcast does an excellent deep dive into the original series too.

Listening to the podcast today, very entertaining, thanks for the recommendation!😁

What’s PUA?

Hollybelle83 · 15/01/2025 18:42

I still love it! Just finished a rewatch not too long ago. Yes bits of it haven't aged well but it's still very entertaining. I actually quite like the first film too.

Interestingly my feelings in the characters has changed loads since watching it back in the day. I still love Miranda the best and Patrovsky can get in the bin (always disliked him). But I used to loathe Carrie and now she doesn't bother me so much. Aiden I always thought was a sweet guy treated really badly, but now I think he's an arse hole. Was Big as bad as I thought back in the day, maybe not.

Who doesn't love Samantha, especially when she does something lovely (giving Miranda the hair appointment) and Charlotte can be annoying but 'I curse the day you were born' is a classic.

Bridget, yes, found it a challenge/annoying to be amongst the Smug Marrieds (and that phrase is pure genius). Charlotte wanted to get married. I could never work out what Carrie wanted. Miranda, I thought, didn’t really want a partner. Samantha wanted to be free. While I’m on the board I too have to say how horrible Berger is! His role is brilliantly written and when I was young I just might have found his shtick attractive. Petrovsky also a tin man…

Appalonia · 15/01/2025 22:40

I know everyone hates the second film, but I personally found it really entertaining. The part when Charlotte was honest about how hard she found motherhood was very moving. The fashions were fabulous, the problems with Carrie and Big when boredom set in, and her angst over kissing Aidan, the foursome singing I am Woman, the Indian hotel worker who had to work abroad and so rarely saw his wife, and Carrie's generosity towards him. Also how women and their sexuality gets treated in Middle Eastern countries. The bit when the women were smuggled out at the end in burkhas was like something out of a Carry On film!

MrsPeterHarris · 15/01/2025 22:52

I loved it too @Appalonia - have loved all of Sex & the City and also And Just Like That! Fabulous!

What “stupidly high” standards did they have exactly?

Miranda always liked Steve. He was the one who had the issue with her outearning him.

Charlotte also just was not super attracted to Harry But I don’t think wanting to fancy your partner is a “stupidly high standard”.

Also she did not really drop her standard as Harry, like all her exes was wealthy, well educated and from a privileged background.

I watched this just before Christmas, watched it when it originally was shown ( couldn’t really remember it) The ending I was so disappointed with

Edited

Charlotte was very attracted to Harry
She just couldn't see why ,because he isn't a conventionally handsome man

There are some lovely moments in that episode. Miranda in the changing room, Steve and Aiden showing up to support her and Carrie walking her out of the church. I especially enjoyed the flowers Charlotte arranged, that were not supposed to say ‘you’re dead, let’s disco’.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 19/01/2025 13:28

See, I'm rewatching the first series

Miranda wanted a man on her level but couldn't keep one

Her date with Ted Baker (ep 6) was good but she had to bring up his spanking fetish (which is an ick, but she needed more info)

She talked her way out of some good men in her field, rather than chilling and holding back some of her thoughts

She settled for Steve like big settled for carrie 🤷‍♀️

I haven’t read all of the thread so I’m sorry if it’s already been mentioned but did anyone watch Lipstick Jungle? I really enjoyed that but it only ran for two seasons which was a real shame as it was written by Candace Bushnell and I had high hopes for it.

MrsPeterHarris · 19/01/2025 16:14

I loved Lipstick Jungle too @Richardchamberlainrocks - had Teddy from Grey's Anatomy in it & she was great (& not the whiny annoying character she is in GA!)

Aha, funnily I got an extract from that for a GCSE revision comprehension once...it was really good, I thought. Still on my to be read...
