Reform UK neck and neck with Labour?

1000 replies

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 11:09

Absolutely shocked to read that in a poll Reform UK are neck and neck with Labour...

About 25% polling share for Reform and Labour.

I thought Blair was the worst PM ever, but Starmer seems to be giving him a run for his money.

Why are you shocked?

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/01/2025 11:17

People vote for a new political party because they want positive change in their lives. Labour haven’t delivered any positive change yet - which isn’t unexpected in their first year of term, obviously, but many voters who were disgruntled enough about their lives and what they saw around them to vote for Labour and change in the first place want more immediate results: being told things might get better in a few years once X and Y have happened when your life feels crap now sounds like a very empty promise. So people begin looking around for other avenues for how that change could be delivered - and Reform might sound convincing and are an option which isn’t had the opportunity to fail at being a government yet.

username299 · 10/01/2025 11:22

We have a few years until the next general election and I'm sure the polls will change a lot in that time.

If it's been caused by Musk, it just goes to show how easily influenced some people are. Hardly shocking after Brexit.

noblegiraffe · 10/01/2025 11:25

I'd be surprised if the massive disinformation campaign didn't have any impact.

Both Labour and Conservatives are serving the electorate on a silver platter to Reform.

HappyPanda613 · 10/01/2025 11:28

Reform need to be banned immediately before they start to get political traction amongst the working class in the north of England.

This is all the fault of X, and I hope Keir Starmer and the Labour have a robust plan for sanctioning social media sites that allow disinformation free reign to be accessed by ordinary people who do not possess the ability to sift fact from fiction.

Frightening times.

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 11:28

What is this "disinformation" people speak of?

Yeah, banning political parties because you don't like them. That's been tried before and it didn't end well...

Which poll op?

I’m not surprised as Labour won’t solve issues and creating new ones that will drive some to Reform

midgetastic · 10/01/2025 11:29

Nope

Labour haven't had time to make positive change against a strong global headwind and a 14 year Tory total fuck

But people are impatient and desperate so ...

In times of crisis people do move to the far right - that's why hitler was so popular. History repeats itself and people are surprised

This is how you propose to solve the issue?

By banning a political party?

What are you, Lenin in disguise?

Why won’t it end well? What will people do? Post angrily on X? That’s why you sanction it.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 10/01/2025 11:31

Yabu to be shocked.

The rest of the world has been heading in this direction for some time. Britain is catching up, after being fed up with the tories gave Labour a blip left win in the UK.

stbeaker · 10/01/2025 11:32

Reform will get a chance - I’m sure of it.

Daisyvodka · 10/01/2025 11:32

There's a massive disinformation campaign going on. I've never seen such a massive slide towards taking quotes completely out of context, or not taking anything IN context. This alongside the press who have done a fantastic job of convincing people that things that would have been sort of middling unpopular in any other climate are a TOTAL DISASTER and STARMERS INSANE and wants GRANNIES TO DIE. Comparing the 'slip ups' of the current government to what the Tories managed to achieve shows a massive gap in terms of severity, but they don't want you to do that, they don't want you to compare the thousands dead because of the Tory government cocking up our covid response to things like changes to the winter fuel payment for pensioners. So they don't report it that way. And people bloody believe it! (The same people who will say 'I educated myself, I'm not a sheeple - i follow random discredited doctors on YouTube who say that the vaccine was to introduce mind control')

letsallchant · 10/01/2025 11:33

Think back now, all the way to June: how many seats were Reform predicted to win in the general election? And how many did they actually get?

I believe in taking polls seriously but not too seriously. Reform as a new and unconventionally run party have some things in the favour but are lacking in others like activists on the ground. Labour shouldn't be complacent but neither should Reform.

You can't just ban things fgs 🙄
What we need is a proper grown up conversation about why people are turning to Reform. Every time Labour try to cancel dissent by calling it "far right" they turn more people to Reform. Just like you calling for Reform to be banned rather than really understanding the reasons for its rise in popularity.

People are sick of the 2 mainstream parties and are desperate for alternatives, they feel ignored, disenfranchised and politically homeless. Labour are doing nothing to reverse this and every misstep they make just opens the door to Reform.
Even on MN, the frequent responses to anyone criticising Labour is "oh you are just a Tory bot" which only has the effect of turning more people away from mainstream parties.

Well what is your solution? Unfettered freedom of speech? Allow social media to let any Tom, Dick and Harry spout their poisonous rhetoric with no recourse? And then what happens when Reform get in to power?

You’re wrong.

Pacifism won’t get you out of this one.

Starmer was a human rights lawyer. His job was basically fighting to keep undesirable people in the UK because of human rights...

People on poorer parts of U.K. ( most affected by unchecked migration) are sick of it - plus grooming gangs &c

Brexit was a disaster sold on the lies of stopping illegal migrants coming in .
