Reform UK neck and neck with Labour?

1000 replies

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 11:09

Absolutely shocked to read that in a poll Reform UK are neck and neck with Labour...

About 25% polling share for Reform and Labour.

I thought Blair was the worst PM ever, but Starmer seems to be giving him a run for his money.

Reform need to be banned immediately before they start to get political traction amongst the working class in the north of England.

This is all the fault of X, and I hope Keir Starmer and the Labour have a robust plan for sanctioning social media sites that allow disinformation free reign to be accessed by ordinary people who do not possess the ability to sift fact from fiction.

Frightening times.

It's a bit more complicated than X. Farage and his cronies are covered in the mainstream media and GB News too. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your view, Farage has the knack of understanding what matters to people and articulating it well.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/01/2025 11:36

HappyPanda613 · 10/01/2025 11:34

Well what is your solution? Unfettered freedom of speech? Allow social media to let any Tom, Dick and Harry spout their poisonous rhetoric with no recourse? And then what happens when Reform get in to power?

You’re wrong.

Pacifism won’t get you out of this one.

I’m not going to engage with you any further, but let me just gently explain to you that you are currently on SM doing exactly that.

Starmer was a human rights lawyer. His job was basically fighting to keep undesirable people in the UK because of human rights...

Nope.

RockingLock · 10/01/2025 11:43

Good. I’d love to see a new government come in who will actually make some changes.

People on poorer parts of U.K. ( most affected by unchecked migration) are sick of it - plus grooming gangs &c

Brexit was a disaster sold on the lies of stopping illegal migrants coming in .

If you think it is just poorer areas of the UK then you’re mad.

The poorer areas may get more coverage/be more vocal and outspoken but there is a growing pool of the wealthy who are sick of the state of this country.

Unchecked immigration, punitive tax measures, failing services and huge distrust in Keir and Reeves and what the next budget will bring.

Musk didn’t start this, Musk is only picking up and amplifying what many are thinking/posting anonymously on social media.

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 11:47

I was thinking about immigration last night, on some level, every single problem the UK faces is made worse by mass immigration.

For instance, we've got a housing crisis and massive rents. If we didn't have mass immigration there would be more houses to go around. I'll be honest, I don't think Labour building on greenbelt is the right thing to do...

You must be pleased that Labour have been deporting illegal immigrants at the highest rate since 2018?

Enforced returns are far more expensive to the tax payer than voluntary returns.

Plus more arriving means costs go up overall

whengodwasarabbit1 · 10/01/2025 11:51

I'm not surprised at all. We've seen global political trends that swing to the left and then to the hard right. It's so worrying and I think it will happen here too. Really worry about the sort of country my daughter will grow up in.

Luckily many are voluntary returns.

Banning political parties you disagree with is quite fascist. Also thinking that working class people in the north don’t deserve democratic freedoms is quite extraordinary.

from this and your posts on other threads I wonder if you’re a parody account.

There's a massive disinformation campaign going on. I've never seen such a massive slide towards taking quotes completely out of context, or not taking anything IN context. This alongside the press who have done a fantastic job of convincing people that things that would have been sort of middling unpopular in any other climate are a TOTAL DISASTER and STARMERS INSANE and wants GRANNIES TO DIE. Comparing the 'slip ups' of the current government to what the Tories managed to achieve shows a massive gap in terms of severity, but they don't want you to do that, they don't want you to compare the thousands dead because of the Tory government cocking up our covid response to things like changes to the winter fuel payment for pensioners. So they don't report it that way. And people bloody believe it! (The same people who will say 'I educated myself, I'm not a sheeple - i follow random discredited doctors on YouTube who say that the vaccine was to introduce mind control')

That is exactly what Labour and Labour supporters did to attack the Tories when they were in.

There were billions of falsehoods and scare stories circulated by the left in newspapers, TV interviews, speeches, on websites, on social media etc etc.

It’s the price of holding power. Get used to it.

How many illegal migrants are crossing the channel to England each year? 35,000 a year or something?

We need to build about 10,000 houses a year just to house them. Or about 25 houses every single day just for illegal immigrants fleeing the hell hole that is France.

For a leader of a minor party, Farage and his cronies get a huge amount if coverage, and very little of it looks in-depth at any policies. It’s easy to promise, when you don’t have to deliver - they have no answer to the simplest of questions about their keystone policy.. which is immigration. How would they reduce it ?

You will get people supporting you, when you tell them you have a magic plan, that will solve all their issues (when you don’t have one at alll)

What do we do about all the jobs that can't be filled by British nationals?
Is it just the people that come over on the boats that you have an issue with or all migrants?

The fact that people actually believe is scary.

OneAmberFinch · 10/01/2025 11:56

Think back now, all the way to June: how many seats were Reform predicted to win in the general election? And how many did they actually get?

I believe in taking polls seriously but not too seriously. Reform as a new and unconventionally run party have some things in the favour but are lacking in others like activists on the ground. Labour shouldn't be complacent but neither should Reform.

Reform were underprepared for the 2024 election and it showed in the candidates they were able to round up. And they still managed to come second in quite a lot more seats than they won. I don't think their seats performance in 2024 is a reflection of what they could do after a few years of improving their activist organisation, carefully selecting viable candidates, bringing in money which is sure to be flowing, and a few careful interventions such as Farage the other day distancing himself from Tommy Robinson to show voters that they do have a line.

(I'm not a member of Reform but watching them closely.)

Other parts of the World don't have massive amounts of people turning up expecting free houses and free money.
Maybe Farage could go to places like Japan and see why they don't have mass immigration?

Atissues · 10/01/2025 11:59

It’s not just poorer areas. You may find people are just keeping their opinions to themselves. If it is clear you support Labour and hate Reform then you may find your friends keep their real feelings to themselves. Debate is not encouraged anymore - we rush to cancel people.

Get rid of local council elections.
Ban a political party some don’t agree with.
Crack down in free speech.
Stop social media we don’t agree with.
Say no to a public enquiry that a you gov poll says 75% of people want. Starmer applied the whip and then abstained.
Ridicule and mock and change the subject to stop debate and criticism.

Freedom of expression is one of the essential foundations of a democratic society. The media require particular protection because they play a key role in defending freedom of expression. Article 10 protects, among others, the right to criticise, to make assumptions or value judgments and the right to have opinions.

Plus the economy is not doing very well at all. The forecast is awful. The mainstream media should be all over this but have been slow. So I don’t believe it’s just the poor who are unhappy. Now mortgage rates are moving up for those about to take a new deal - rents may well rise again.

That's the funny thing, all the complaints about jobs being "taken" from Brits. I used to work with an employment service (closely linked to Job Centre but not them), and the amount of people born and bred in this country who sat and told me they'd do "anything" apart from cleaning, office work, don't want to work with the public, definitely not care work... I also can't remember the last time I was seen by a specialist doctor who wasn't an immigrant, I hope we have plenty of British specialists/consultants waiting to fill those gaps.
