Where does all the stuff go??

I lost my car/house keys at the weekend. They are on the same bunch, I drove home, let myself in the house. Went to lock up that evening and couldn't find them anywhere. I still haven't found them and I have turned this house upside down. Along with the obvious places, like under the sofa, down the back of the coffee table etc, Ive also emptied the bin, searched though the washing, looked in the freezer, searched the garage, if it can move, ive moved it. If theres a gap, ive searched it - nothing!

ive lost stuff in the past that ive never found, even when moving, they've never turned up.

Where are my keys? And were does all the stuff go?

This happened to me too and I knew I had used my keys to get in the house, got new car keys and everything, I had bought myself a new work blazer and wore it upstairs and didn't wear it again for 2 weeks, I put the car key in the pocket of the blazer obviously!

I do leave it unlocked so this isnt impossible, but, there is nowhere by the front door for me to leave my keys, so they would need to come in to the living room, and I think id see/hear them

is it just like silver keys n a hoop-are they on a similar\same material surface.i was terrible loose my phone when really id sat it face down on the edge of a black stove top ...cant see for looking...

peacockbluefeather · 10/01/2025 07:29

It's house pixies, right?

Auburngal · 10/01/2025 07:31

I only wash the duvet with the pillowcases. So I don't get socks trapped in the duvet.

myplace · 10/01/2025 08:08

I calculated the number of socks I handle in a week, and that really reassured me that a few missing was really inevitable. Each sock gets handled many times- off foot, into hamper. Out of hamper into basket. Out of basket into machine. Out of machine into basket. Out of basket onto airer/line. Off line into basket… into drawer, onto foot. That’s 16 times per pair of socks worn. 5 people in the house. That’s 80 sock manoeuvres a day, disregarding PE and any sojourns on the floor. Inevitable one goes wrong.

However the dog’s ear drops that I put between my legs to warm yesterday morning… they vanished before I could use them. That really is mysterious.

There's a car key card, a Yale type key, and a long key. I've also got my trolley coin on it, with a couple of rings,an initial keyring and a standard plastic keyring thingy with the car logo on. The bunch is too big to just not be able to see it.

Im going to have a clear out tomorrow and look (again) in all the nooks and crannies.

Fingers crossed they turn up, they have to for my own sanity.

Any luck yet?

Katemax82 · 11/01/2025 20:57

In the last house i lived in i lost a perfume oil, it never turned up, even after we moved out and we gutted the place

Grasmereginger · 12/01/2025 09:36

Just realised I have a set of car keys missing for months
And a ring
And a shirt

ViciousCurrentBun · 12/01/2025 09:40

Check behind your radiators. I’m very much keys straight in the bowl in the kitchen but once when distracted I didn’t. Must have had them in my hand and leant on it or something, they had fallen behind the radiator.

Grasmereginger · 12/01/2025 09:54

@ViciousCurrentBun good shout. We have a brush thing. I'll give them a good old poke

Had this happen so many times over the years , I put a friends Christmas present in a cupboard with other gifts , when I went to get it it was gone … apologised and told friend there was part of her gift missing .. went away for Christmas and when I came back they were in my bed ! Yes I was living alone at the time

There was a news report earlier this week about a bloke in Australia who was gutting his childhood home.
Ripping out a cupboard or something he found a wrapped Christmas present with his name on in his Mum's handwriting.
When he opened it, it was a set of Hot Wheels or similar, he guessed it had been there at least 45 years!

Can you imagine what his Mum went through, knowing she had bought and wrapped it then for it to disappear?

I saw the news report on that. It was 4 jet planes. He even waited for her mum to wake up and showed it to them 🤣

Grasmereginger · 12/01/2025 12:33

There's definitely house elves in the walls. Husband has just told me he's cleaned behind every radiator very recently and keys and my card been gone for months ?!

bleepingbleepybleep · 12/01/2025 15:41

Right. I've officially given up!

I've spent the day moving out furniture, took apart the sofa, emptied the laundry basket, gone through every drawer and cupboard in the house, stripped the beds, looked in every pocket and bag, nothing!

I don't know where else to look.

On a plus side...the house is sparking 😆

Have you checked the pockets of what you were wearing? Completely emptied your bag?

Retrace your steps. Think through every little thing you did. If you cooked and opened a cupboard to get a pan, check the cupboard.

You don't have a dog, do you? They've swallowed weirder things.

There have been cases where people leave keys in a hall within sight of the letterbox and crooks out some sort of hook arrangement through to steal them and come back when the place is empty ... is that possible?

Next step - do you know anyone with a metal detector?

Justploddingonandon · 13/01/2025 20:38

I once dropped a ring and it rolled in the gap under the skirting board that I hadn't realised was big enough! Was a right pain to get out and don't think I'd have spotted it if I hadn't seen it go in.

Youtookmyhandle · 13/01/2025 20:44

Since we're all made from atoms, maybe, they reached an identical state as the floor and just merged. One day, someone will find them and wonder how the hell they got there.😂

I read a novel many years ago about where the lost things go. Think it was by Cecilia Aherne but I’ll have to look it up.

I get this a lot, especially now my toddler has taken to posting anything he can get his hands on into any small space my hands won’t fit into.

Was just coming on to say the same thing, the book is ‘a place called here’ and whilst complete fiction, it makes me feel far less irked when I loose things (which happens with alarming regularity).

Well worth a read!

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 13/01/2025 20:51

The elation I feel when all socks come out of the washing machine and pair up nicely is really quite sad.

@bleepingbleepybleep ah it is definitely a glitch in the matrix 😅 had a very unique pair of earrings bought for me for valentines day. I took them out that evening and put them on my side table next to the bed. Woke the next morning to find 1 missing. When I say I emptied my bedroom...I EMPTIED it. Dismantled bed, went around with a sock on a hoover. It was nowhere to be found. Que 2 years later I've pulled an old holdall from the attic and there it was in an unused gym bag from times gone by...when I wasn't as lazy and a lot thinner😅 have no clue how it could of got there?? If anyone has any theories I'd like to hear them!

There was a brilliant thread on reddit where a gentleman cooked an egg a day for breakfast. He picked up his 6 pack out of the fridge, cracked it, fried it, ate it.
When he went to put the pack back in the fridge there was still 6 eggs left.....claimed he did not gain superpowers after recooking and eating mysterious 'quantum egg'😄
