Where does all the stuff go??

I lost my car/house keys at the weekend. They are on the same bunch, I drove home, let myself in the house. Went to lock up that evening and couldn't find them anywhere. I still haven't found them and I have turned this house upside down. Along with the obvious places, like under the sofa, down the back of the coffee table etc, Ive also emptied the bin, searched though the washing, looked in the freezer, searched the garage, if it can move, ive moved it. If theres a gap, ive searched it - nothing!

ive lost stuff in the past that ive never found, even when moving, they've never turned up.

Where are my keys? And were does all the stuff go?

I picked up my work ID pass and lanyard and put it round my neck. Then I walked into the living room and sat down in an armchair to finish my cup of tea. I stood up and walked a couple of steps across the room and something fell to my feet. I bent down to pick it up and realised it was my ID card. I went to put the ID card back in the plastic holder attached to the lanyard - IT WAS GONE! I just had the lanyard round my neck with the metal clip at the end. I searched the floor, under the chair, removed all the cushions, but I couldn't find the plastic holder, and never have.

I can't work it out. If the holder had fallen off before I picked up the lanyard in the kitchen, then how did the ID card end up falling to the floor in the living room. How could it have been transported there?

Very weird.

Very strange, even more so because you saw it happen

Left in the door would have been my guess, but presumably someone has left the house since the weekend and would've noticed if still there. And if someone had pinched them they would probably have at least taken the car at the same time!
Do you have young children? When mine were toddlers they liked to post stuff into anywhere they could.

No young kids. My kids are late teens and twenty's, so at the age where they step over things more than move things out the way 😂

I lost a bank card once, it slipped down the side of the sofa cushion - I saw it go.

Stuck my hand down, took all the cushions off the sofa, cut the lining on the bottom, turned it upside down. Vanished.

Several years later we literally smashed that sofa to pieces to fit it in the car to go to the tip. No sign of my bank card. Where did it go?!

I also lost a car key - a key I used every day and had used to get home so it had to be in the house. Vanished. Moved house since then and it didn't turn up.

Very bizarre.....they must be somewhere...they have to be!!

Where do they go? Is there a fourth sock dimension?

I use one of those net bags for socks now. Even then, the odd one goes astray.

But but but…..howwwww??!!!

sleetysnowflakes · 09/01/2025 22:05

In a paw patrol rucksack under the sofa (thanks to toddler dd)

rosemole · 09/01/2025 22:06

I'm still looking for my rolling pin so gawd knows 🤷‍♀️ How does one lose such a thing?

Any luck OP?

zaxxon · 09/01/2025 22:11

I lost a bank card which I often shove into a pocket. So I checked every trouser pocket, coat pocket and handbag I could think of. They finally turned up... in a skirt pocket.

Our shoe rack is under the place where we hang coats and bags, and the shelf where we put keys and gubbins. Shoes end up sprawled beyond the rack, and beyond what you might call the drop zone.

Keys, hair clips, trolley tokens, that special conker, basically anything that might fall out of your pocket, or that you thought you put in your pocket but didn't realise you missed the pocket, all end up in the shoes. Even the shoes that are a metre away from your coat.

If you keep shoes anywhere near your coats or bags, check inside each one. Don't just look, shake them out and stick your hand right in.

Check also behind and under any nearby radiators/skateboards/whatever else is anywhere near the drop zone.

If nothing else, you'll have an early spring clean 😉

Ive done all this. Ive checked the coats, pockets, hoods, sleeves. Checked all shoes....just in case

I usually come straight in, straight into the kitchen before ive even took my coat off, because the dogs run straight to the back door. Keys go in my handbag, handbag goes down the side if the sofa, that's my routine.

I lost my purse in December, so werid we out to a friends party, l didn't take my bank cards just cash for cab, paid the cab when we got home, next morning no purse anywhere, very annoying, it only had £15 in. I'm absolutely sure l had it in my hand when l walked in because my keys were in it. My keys were in my pocket next morning but no purse.

TheTruthHurtsDontIt · 09/01/2025 22:13

Maybe you've got someone living in your walls 🙃

HumphreyCushionintheHouse · 09/01/2025 22:14

Last time my bunch of keys went missing, I found them in the kitchen bin. I think my then toddler put them in there. Nice of him to help clean up haha.

I don't know! Somehow between getting the bag out of the washing machine and hanging them up to dry the occasional one goes missing...

A rolling pin? That;s not even something you can throw away without realising.

No luck yet, Ive given up for now and using the spares....fingers crossed they dont find themselves in the key abyss

You’ve probably put them somewhere on auto pilot.

I’ve spent all evening looking for my daughter’s bank card and bus pass. I’ve looked everywhere but they’ve vanished.

Angrymum22 · 09/01/2025 22:17

When DS was little we were going out, I put the keys on the dining room table the phone rang, I answered it, turned round and the keys were gone. It’s not unusual to misplace keys so I assumed that I’d imagined putting them on the table. I emptied my bag, pockets started to search further afield. I then remembered DS, who was a toddler had been opening the cupboard in the sideboard while I was on the phone. I had a Quick Look and there they were.
I think I would have been searching for days if I hadn’t caught DS out of the corner of my eye. He’d been opening and closing the cupboard to get toys out.

I have found my keys in the door multiple times, in the fridge, in the cutlery drawer, on top of the bin, in the bottom of my bags for life, the dog has taken them into her bed. And they regularly turn up in my handbag despite me searching through it several times.

I recently lost a gold bracelet that had broken. I’d put it away somewhere safe until I had time to get it fixed. It took me nearly a day of searching, I’d put it in a box with another bracer I rarely wear.

What doesn’t help is having a DH who tidies up. After 30 yrs though, I now know his hiding places.

rosemole · 09/01/2025 22:20

They're not in the door on the outside are they?? My kids do this all the time when they let themselves in.

TheSoapyFrog · 09/01/2025 22:20

A wormhole to a different dimension opens up. This also explains why you sometimes find something in your house which isn't yours and you don't know how it got there.

I don't know if this is linked to the washing machine sock abyss, or the tupperware lid abyss.

This! Either that or it's house elves being over zealous.

gamerchick · 09/01/2025 22:23

You don't leave your door unlocked when you're in do you? People walk in and take car keys to come back another time.

No, they've been missing since the weekend and Ive been in and out several times since then. Its not a lock you could leave the key in anyway, you have to turn it to unlock it, if you let go of the key, it would turn back and lock again

Socks in our house usually turn up inside duvet covers or in pj bottoms after being in the tumble dryer.

FallenRaingel · 09/01/2025 22:25

Behind the U Bend of the toilet.

Twice I've found my keys there, clearly I put them in a pocket while dashing upstairs after locking the door immediately behind me and trying to beat the 100 fold increased urge to pee while doing that.

If more women's had functional pockets it would probably be more than twice.

Bath is the other place.

Michellesbackbrace · 09/01/2025 22:25

I know it’s obvious but have you checked the pockets of what you were wearing and your handbag?

Did you go straight to the bathroom when you got in and leave them in there? I’ve done this when dying for a wee and then found them behind an air freshener on the bathroom window sill.

I lost my wedding ring for two years. I went away to a spa overnight and left my engagement and wedding ring on top of my drawers as I didn’t want to wear them in the spa. I remember leaving them together and actively thinking “maybe I should just take them”? Came home and only the engagement ring was there. Adult ds who’d been left home alone swore he didn’t know and said he hadn’t had friends round but I was convinced he had and someone had nicked it (I didn’t voice this btw) but it was a complete mystery.

I then was moving furniture about two years later and found it behind a cabinet in the living room that I move and sweep behind every few months or so.

I couldn’t fathom it at all!
