Where does all the stuff go??

I lost my car/house keys at the weekend. They are on the same bunch, I drove home, let myself in the house. Went to lock up that evening and couldn't find them anywhere. I still haven't found them and I have turned this house upside down. Along with the obvious places, like under the sofa, down the back of the coffee table etc, Ive also emptied the bin, searched though the washing, looked in the freezer, searched the garage, if it can move, ive moved it. If theres a gap, ive searched it - nothing!

ive lost stuff in the past that ive never found, even when moving, they've never turned up.

Where are my keys? And were does all the stuff go?

Have you checked the freezer...❄

You don't leave your door unlocked when you're in do you? People walk in and take car keys to come back another time.

I do leave it unlocked so this isnt impossible, but, there is nowhere by the front door for me to leave my keys, so they would need to come in to the living room, and I think id see/hear them

I arrived at work one day (commuted by train) to find I didn’t have my phone with me. no sign of it at home , in the car, anywhere, despite turning everything upside down.

THREE YEARS later I got a phone call from the local train station. The regular station master had retired, and the new chap had found a drawer full of all the phones which had been lost and handed in over the years - they had simply been put on a drawer and ignored (I’d asked at the time if it had been handed in) - he was gradually working through charging them up and calling the owners to let them know.

I also found my wedding ring 10 years after losing it, trapped between the runner and side of a kitchen drawer. The drawer itself had been searched several times - it was only when it was actually removed completely that the ring came to light.

I’ve lost both of my credit cards somewhere in the house, and I need one to put the deposit on a hire car next week (the only thing I ever use them for). I haven’t used either of them since the last time I went away in October.

I have searched everywhere I can think of!!

I'm missing several things. Most irritating would be socks. A friend bought me a really nice pair of bamboo socks. I wore them and washed them. There was only one in the machine when the washing had finished. The machine has been checked over and the filter emptied and its not there.
Nor is the other sock I lost. Treated myself to a pair of silly print socks. Same thing- wore them, washed them and one vanished.

Check inside duvet covers. I’ve found a few lost socks in them.

Lost a necklace 5 years ago.. found it 3 weeks ago in an old handbag I was about to send to the charity shop that I've not used in god knows how long, probably again 5 years ago. Alongside it was a ring my late mother had given me 2 years ago. I've no idea how it got there.

I find it so bizarre. I genuinely have looked EVERYWHERE, even places I know it wouldn't be because, you know, just in case.

I put them in my bag, and my bag goes down the side of the sofa, its just too much of a coincidence that they happen to have gone missing on the one day I didn't put them in my bag as usual...but...I don't know what the alternative is

I hope you find your credit cards, Im assuming you have checked to make sure they haven't been used?

Have you looked in your dog's bed? My dog has a habit of stealing things and claiming them as his own.

Just this week, I lost cheques we'd been sent for Christmas 😞

Weirdest one wasn't technically lost but sleep deprivation. I found a missing bit of train track inside a box of crackers!!!! I'd put them away and accidentally dropped the track in!

I am convinced the universe disappears things for shits and gigs.

Have you returned it to Network Rail? Maybe that's why our local line is always closed for repairs.

newtlover · 09/01/2025 22:48

there are 3 possibilities

  1. Borrowers
  2. Burglar Bill ('that's a nice X, I'll have that')
  3. The Mystery Mover (actually only in our house, moves things that then reappear in the wrong place)

Pockets. Random Pockets of cardigans trousers and coats.

I second the duvet covers stealing socks, they hide in the corners.

rosemole · 09/01/2025 22:51

I can't wait to find out where they were when you find them. Hope it's somewhere really quirky and not just behind the microwave.

PersephoneSmith · 09/01/2025 22:55

I once found my lost wedding ring in the airing cupboard. 12 years lost and I had moved house in the meantime.

DH found his ring in the freezer though it was only missing a few weeks.
Things end up in the rubbish and recycling quite regularly judging by the number of calls I get from residents about it (council waste management)

Sweetpea232 · 09/01/2025 23:04

Oh, another one. I washed our summer bedding, hung it outside to dry and put it back on the bed. A large velvet cushion cover was missing. I searched every bit of fabric in the house, even visited the neighbours to check it hadn’t blown off the line. I KNEW it had gone into the wash but hadn’t come out of the wash. A complete mystery.

Months later I stripped the cushions to replace the winter bedding. I took off the large velvet cushion cover to find, underneath, a second velvet cushion cover. I had put both on the same cushion, in autopilot, with absolutely no memory of doing so.

It's a glitch in the matrix OP. Well go the same way one day 😂

Liuo · 09/01/2025 23:11

I lost a pan?! A couple of years ago, didn’t even find it when I moved house, so inteuiged where that ended up!

Check inside duvet covers. I’ve found a few lost socks in them.

Every duvet cover I own has been used and washed since then, sadly no socks have emerged.

rosemole · 09/01/2025 23:14

You just reminded me I lost a flute (yes, a proper silver flute in a case) and found it months (years?) later eventually in a cupboard. So there is hope for the old rolling pin.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/01/2025 23:17

I read a novel many years ago about where the lost things go. Think it was by Cecilia Aherne but I’ll have to look it up.

I get this a lot, especially now my toddler has taken to posting anything he can get his hands on into any small space my hands won’t fit into.

Porlocks · 09/01/2025 23:20

The novel 'A Place Called Here' by Cecilia Ahern is about exactly this. A dimension full of lost things called 'Here'', including actual missing people in the book.

I read it years ago, but I've always remembered it. I lose so many things completely inexplicably that it can be the only explanation!
