Pasta..

MumWifeOther · 05/01/2025 00:17

I went for dinner tonight and the menu said the dish I ordered was made with penne.. When the food arrived it was fusilli!

I hate fusilli, it’s the worst pasta beside angel hair (capellini), so I actually politely sent the dish back and asked for something else (they apparently had run out of penne and forgot to say).

AIBU - all pasta is the same
YNBU - fusilli is the worst pasta (or enter your worst)

You don't like fusilli? My preference would be for the fusilli, but I wouldn't send it back if a different shaped pasta arrived, what a waste of food!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 05/01/2025 00:22

I wouldn't have noticed!

Nope I really hate fusilli. I said I would try it and it was as horrible as I remembered. Didn’t fancy paying £17 for a dinner I wouldn’t enjoy 🤷🏽‍♀️

Prefer fusilli. It’s better for sauces as it wraps around the shape.

With penne it’s just a tube of molten tongue burning sauce.

On their own though they both taste the same and I have no preference. 🤷‍♀️

Talipesmum · 05/01/2025 00:23

No, all pasta isn’t the same, some works better for some dishes but I would find it hard to get worked up about fusilli vs penne. I’d use them pretty interchangeably. Sometimes if I’ve got half bags left I’ve been known to mix them (only mentioned that to give you nightmares)

Oh see, I love tubular pasta, rigatoni is my favourite but I like penne as I like the sauce to collect in the middle 😂

No I wouldn’t have sent it back for that. But neither would I pay £17 for a bowl of pasta!

GuineaPigWig · 05/01/2025 00:27

Dislike fusilli
Love fusilli bucati
Especially if it’s fusilli bucati lunghi

Pandasnacks · 05/01/2025 00:27

It’s the same pasta in a different shape so I wouldn’t care. But you did and the customer is always right. Were the restaurant difficult about it?

cheeseismydownfall · 05/01/2025 00:29

You didn't do anything wrong OP - plenty of people wouldn't be fussed, but you were, and that's fine. Like you I much prefer penne to fusilli: I find it typically holds it's shape better, whereas fusilli flops about pathetically.

There is a good reason why there are a dozens of different pasta shapes and why there is often a trantional pairing of a particular type of pasta with a particular sauce.

No they were great, our waitress was such a lovely young woman 😊

It was actually a chicken parmigiana - but on a bed of pasta. Usually served with spaghetti, which I love, but would have been fine with penne. I draw the line at fusilli 😂

Prefer fussili. But I agree re angel hair- feels like snot in the mouth.

I so clearly remember the first and only time I tried angel hair pasta. AWFUL.

Ugh this happened to me when I ordered a vegetarian linguine.

A bowl of penne and broccoli turned up. I was raging.

Ah that’s great, I voted YABU because all pasta is the same to me. But YANBU to send it back

MabelMora · 05/01/2025 00:43

I get that the physical properties of different types of pasta are different with regard to how the shape holds the sauce etc, but does fusilli itself taste different to penne? I don't think it does therefore yabu imo. I'm inclined to agree with a pp that it's a waste of food.

Obviously it would've been best if they said when you were ordering that it would have to be with fusilli, but they probably didn't think it would make a difference.

heroinechic · 05/01/2025 00:44

There is absolutely a pasta shape hierarchy but I don't understand how you can love one and hate another when it tastes the exact same!

It’s just an entirely different texture and experience. I guess pasta is technically pasta.. as in durum wheat 😂 but I genuinely wouldn’t have ordered it if it said fusilli!

Fusilli is just so dry to me!

Pappardelle is the worst. The pinched bit in the middle takes much longer to cook that the ‘wings’ so either the middle’s undercooked or the rest is overcooked.

Bumpygritch · 05/01/2025 00:53

Haven’t voted as your pasta rating is the opposite of mine! Wouldn’t have ordered penne but I love fusilli - the spiral holds the sauce round it.

Teenie22 · 05/01/2025 00:56

You should try being gluten free. You always get fusilli. All tastes the same to me no matter what shape!

I don't get this. Penne and fuselli are pretty much interchangeable for me.

Sending it back seems a bit OTT and wasteful.
