I went for dinner tonight and the menu said the dish I ordered was made with penne.. When the food arrived it was fusilli!

I hate fusilli, it’s the worst pasta beside angel hair (capellini), so I actually politely sent the dish back and asked for something else (they apparently had run out of penne and forgot to say).

AIBU - all pasta is the same
YNBU - fusilli is the worst pasta (or enter your worst)

It's the same substance so it tastes the same. Flour, egg/water, salt. Mouthfeel is different but not enough to make me send it back.

Yes, but "they're the wrong shape!", OP what are your thoughts on Mickey Mouse shaped pasta?

This is what I think too. Love penne. Rigatoni, pappardelle, the shell one - depending on the sauce. Obviously back in the day as a student I would mix odds and sods of pasta but these days I don’t have. I would have eaten the dish but would have moaned to poor DH about it 😂

I had no idea people had such strong feelings about pasta.

I always ask for different pasta if the menu says penne. I hate the way it feels in my mouth.

@HOTTOGOisastupidsong Was coming to ask the same question lol. Definitely getting pappardelle and farfalle mixed up.

I agree. What a waste of food. Pasta is pasta, I couldn't care less what shape I was served.

They should ideally have let you know that the dish was being served with a different pasta, but in the grand scheme of things it's not a big issue. Not sure how someone can like penne but not fusilli tbh though.

YANBU to expect to be served what you ordered.
YABU to think fusilli is the worst pasta. That place is reserved for those disgusting bow ties that stay rock hard in the middle and overcooked at their soggy frilly little edges. Can't remember their name as I never buy them.

I love Fusilli the best! I never buy penne and wouldn't knowingly order it as a meal option either , but if it arrived on my plate I'd eat it , it's just not my favourite

Agree . A quote from one of my favourite utube channels. Texture is flavour . I think you were right to send it back op . The different shapes give a completely different dining experience on the tongue and I would have also been disappointed .

I initially thought 'get a grip' then remembered there's a dish I make at home and usually use conchigilie or rigatoni at a push. Partner insisted on spaghetti instead one night saying 'it didn't matter'.
Oh my goodness, it changed the whole texture of the dish. I wouldn't say horrid but it became just a bowl of bleurgh so i do get where you're coming from.

There is a book which explains why certain pasta shapes work better with different sauces. Never read it so can’t impart any knowledge on the subject, but I’m sure it’s important!

I like fusilli, it's my preferred choice. I think the issue is obviously texture and density. I'm not sure I would've cared either way. I would just be excited to have real pasta and not the gluten free mush we have to eat at home because of dh.
