Pasta..

MumWifeOther · 05/01/2025 00:17

I went for dinner tonight and the menu said the dish I ordered was made with penne.. When the food arrived it was fusilli!

I hate fusilli, it’s the worst pasta beside angel hair (capellini), so I actually politely sent the dish back and asked for something else (they apparently had run out of penne and forgot to say).

AIBU - all pasta is the same
YNBU - fusilli is the worst pasta (or enter your worst)

Nope, fusilli is horribly bouncy and goes cold in seconds. Penne and rigatoni hold their shape and feel more substantial.

Haven’t voted as your pasta rating is the opposite of mine! Wouldn’t have ordered penne but I love fusilli - the spiral holds the sauce round it.

I just think it absorbs it?

Pappardelle is the worst. The pinched bit in the middle takes much longer to cook that the ‘wings’ so either the middle’s undercooked or the rest is overcooked.

True. Another horrible pasta 😢

Fusilli is my preferred shape because the sauce spreads so it’s not dry!

I don't get this. Penne and fuselli are pretty much interchangeable for me.

Sending it back seems a bit OTT and wasteful.

The sauce collects in penne make it much more saucy?

OP posts:
Bungrung · 05/01/2025 01:04

Penne can be dry

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 05/01/2025 01:04

Genuinely upset by how this vote has gone. Different pasta shapes are not the same. Different texture, they absorb sauce differently.
They should at least tell you they've run out and try to substitute a similar pasta shape.

Bungrung · 05/01/2025 01:05

The sauce collects in penne make it much more saucy?

doesn’t that depend on how runny the sauce is though?

Penne can be dry

It’s no where as saucy or good as rigatoni but muchhh better than fusilli?

Pappardelle is the worst. The pinched bit in the middle takes much longer to cook that the ‘wings’ so either the middle’s undercooked or the rest is overcooked.

Also it is impossible to eat without splashing the sauce all over your top.

Yes, but with this dish the sauce would have collected. I think that’s the issue - I hate dry food

I prefer ‘oops a la Gene Hunt.

Nope sorry, fusilli wins for me in terms of sauce compatibility

IKnowAPlace · 05/01/2025 01:12

They should have told you the dish would be different before preparing it.

It probably wouldn't have bothered me personally but I can see why it would irritate some.

DreamTheMoors · 05/01/2025 01:16

My dad liked his steaks well done.
”Cremate it!” he’d say.
So one time the chef brought him out a piece of charcoal on a plate along with a jacket potato and some lovely vegetables.
Don’t make the chef angry by asking them to ruin the dish or by being picky over the pasta.

YANBU. You should get what you pay for. My DH hates spaghetti but loves linguine.

You do realise that she’s paying for this meal right? It’s not a freebie that he’s cooking for her?

I hope you don’t work in a restaurant.

FiveTreeHill · 05/01/2025 01:37

My absolute pet peeve is when restaurants change something like this and don't tell you. If you don't have penne tell me, don't just switch it ffs. It drives me insane. I would probably be totally fine if they said when ordering it was fusilli but to just have it appear in front of you without warning, it's disrespectful 🤣

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 05/01/2025 01:37

Yanbu

Growing up we used to have the cheap food. So we'd have the cheapest possible smart price pasta

My dm would slow cook it for some reason, no idea why 😄😄 so it would be mushy

Just nasty

Up until recently I couldn't stomach penne

But I bought it and as long as it isn't the cheap stuff it's not so bad.

But pasta shapes do taste different - i love concigle (the shells)

FiveTreeHill · 05/01/2025 01:39

Fusilli is such a everyday pasta as well, it's the ultimate student pasta. Penne is almost the everyday pasta but has a better sauce ratio than fusilli, fusilli is a downgrade in the pasta charts

Are you getting pappardelle and farfalle mixed up? Pappardelle is like very wide tagliatelle, farfalle is like the little bow ties.

I am NOT a fan of farfalle, but I do like pappardelle with a good mushroom sauce.

I am not a particular fan of Fusilli, but the pasta I would send back if I got it unexpectedly would actually be Penne. Rigatoni is lovely, but penne is too thin.

For a basic tubular pasta other than Rigatoni I would go Cavatappi.

For a spaghetti type pasta then I would take Linguine over Spaghetti any day, but actually the best is Fusilli Lunghi Bucati.

Dcbjgfdh · 05/01/2025 01:43

Fusilli is one of my favourites, and I’m so glad you’ve said the ‘real’ name for angel hair spaghetti, I’ve been looking for that for years!
Our pasta tastes are obviously very different. My least favourite is penne. But I completely agree with you that your least favourite pasta can ruin a meal. And if it states you are getting a certain type of pasta, then that is what you should get.

PeloMom · 05/01/2025 02:28

heroinechic · 05/01/2025 00:44

There is absolutely a pasta shape hierarchy but I don't understand how you can love one and hate another when it tastes the exact same!

I eat most pasta shapes but farfale is 🤮 for me. The way the pasta is dense in the middle is horrible

JMSA · 05/01/2025 02:32

I'd have felt like a child or proper weirdo for sending it back. Sorry! Grin

Kitkatcatflap · 05/01/2025 03:47

Fusilli is kids pasta. There is no reason to eat it of you are over the age of 8
