To think I’m not doing anything wrong

Viserrisk · 04/01/2025 15:12

Back to work on Monday after a lovely 2 weeks off! I’m currently reading a book (well I was before I came on here) with a glass of wine and left over Pringles from Christmas.

DH was out doing his hobby and he’s just come back home and asked me why I was drinking. I said I’m having a glass of wine, not exactly having shots rolling around everywhere. He said that I shouldn’t be drinking while looking after DC and that drinking alone in the house when it’s not Christmas anymore is “weird” DC1 is upstairs in their room and DC2 is sat on the floor playing.

AIBU?

Well, that depends. Have you had problems with alcohol in the past? If you have , then it is wrong.

Yes YABU - what if one of your children needed to be taken to hospital and you were over the limit to drive?

What about parents who don't drive or have cars.

Getting drunk with kids isn't great, but a small drink or two in the safety of your home isn't a big deal

Sitting and drinking a glass of wine at 3pm, when you're in charge of children young enough to sit on the floor and play seems very odd to me.

If I came home to dh in this exact scenario I'd probably be of the same opinion as op's dh. And whilst I wouldn't make a song and dance of it, I'd be secretly watching dh's alcohol consumption in future tbph, in case I'd missed something.

That sounds a little righteous to me. Whatever the rights and wrongs, I would have to be ‘told off’ by another adult. Just really annoying behaviour from him.

YABU yourself. If you are going that route no-one with DC can drink ever - which is utter nonsense. And one glass of wine won't put you over the limit.

Do get over yourself. That's perfectly fine. I started drinking yesterday at about 3 pm with a G and T - DD and her DP had beer and we spent the afternoon chatting, sorting out dogs, and then watching a couple of films. A glass of wine whilst a child plays on the floor is no issue at all. And weird to think it's weird.

ChristmasKelpie · 05/01/2025 18:21

tell him to hush.

Errors · 05/01/2025 18:43

I usually drop the kids off at A&E first. That way I can come home and enjoy my glass of wine in peace

This made me laugh out loud!!!

I don’t think you did anything wrong OP!! You seized an opportunity so fair play. If you were all out to lunch together nobody wouldn’t judge you having a bit of wine with your food would they?!

"won't put you over the limit" - depends where you live. In Scotland the alcohol limit for driving is minuscule, 22 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath compared to 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath in the rest of the UK.

Then, as others have suggested, taxis are available. What do people who don't drive/don't have a car do in an emergency?

Christ there are some uptight people on here

The number of people on here who don’t like being criticised for their drinking but are happy to name call those who don’t drink/don’t drink while responsible for children is unreal! Different things suit different people and families. I don’t think everyone who drinks or drinks in front of their kids is a raging out of control alcoholic or a bad parent. Why are people who don’t drink labelled uptight, stuck up, no fun, boring, judgemental, etc? We must be the only country in the world where choosing not to enjoy a harmful substance is seen as the strange abnormal choice 🙈🙈🙈.

Look forward to the thread “I went out and came home to my husband drinking beer while looking after 2 young children”

pretty sure that would be an immediate LTB

OP had one glass of wine. It would be the same for me if a man had one beer.

Well exactly. And even if you drive, you might (heaven forbid!) be out and about without your car when an emergency happens. I certainly don't spend my life in readiness for driving to a hospital at a moment's notice. Comes up a lot on here though.

Viserrisk · 05/01/2025 19:22

@Billydavey There’s drinking and then there’s having one drink🤷🏻‍♀️

Lads, if your children are terrified after you have one glass of wine, the problem isn't the wine. Its you. You're the problem.

I feel very sorry for the people who are apparently entirely unable to relax due to the constant worry about what terrible fate might befall their children if they let their guard down, even for a second 😂

I don’t think abstaining from alcohol is uptight. I think judging the OP for having one glass of wine are uptight.
For context, this year was the first time ever I was a little tipsy around my son (2 glasses of Prosecco)
He is 9. It’s never been something I do or ever wanted to. Never been a midday or afternoon drinker. Can go weeks without it. I just wouldn’t judge the OP for doing something so harmless

Maybe they are. Or maybe they were raised by alcoholics/have trauma around alcohol and calling them names doesn’t help anyone.

That’s a bit of a reach.
In that case, they shouldn’t project that trauma on to the OP and judge her for it. She isn’t the one causing anyone to have trauma around alcohol.

EDIT: I didn’t call anyone names, either.

Thank you, I think it was a tad unfair that I was called a ‘nut job’ on this thread several times because I don’t agree with drinking around children for my own personal reasons.
