To not want to take dog for the night?

Mumalorian · 04/01/2025 10:04

My DF has had to go into hospital for a night and DB has asked if we could take the dog as he is going away for the night with sil and dn (Df stays with db).

I have said no on the grounds that their dog barks and will start our dog off barking, we know this as df brought the dog down for a day over xmas which wasnt an issue, but the barking was constant and got worse when we put their dog out in the hallway so we could eat as she is a begger for food and would eat off plates. Df gets up at ridiculous times to get his dog out.

We have 3 dc and don't want them to be affected by barking throughout the night.

I have suggested that we can let their dog out and feed her around 9pm and come back again in the morning somewhere between 8 & 9 yo feed and take the dog out.

I don't want db to miss out on this night away but don't want our whole night to be disrupted because of barking.

How close by are you? My DM lives next door so this is what she does if we need our dog looked after as he prefers to be in his own home. He’ll spend the day with her then she’ll bring him back about 8:30, comes up to let him out for a last wee at 10pm then back in at 7:30am for first wee and breakfast.

Anewuser · 04/01/2025 10:10

If the dog is normally let out more frequently then I would say you are unreasonable to think he can go all night without needing a wee.

You are likely to walk in to a puddle of pee or poo. Are you going to clean it up?

Surely, the neighbours are going to hear him barking all night as well?

If you can’t take him then he needs to go into boarding kennels.

About 10 minutes away

Kennels or pet sitter.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 04/01/2025 10:14

12 hours is too long for the dog to be left with no access for a wee I'm afraid.

If you are going to leave the dog at your DB'S then I would say someone needs to be there to walk it at 10-11 and then again by 7am and also be prepared to have to clear uo mess.

You are nit being unreasonable to say no, but how often to you ask DB or DF to look after your own dog?

Too far and unfair on the dog and any neighbours.

HappiestSleeping · 04/01/2025 10:14

Plus one for kennels or a sitter. Dogs don't really enjoy being left with no human in the house, but most can cope with periods of a few hours. More than that is unreasonable IMHO.

TwentyTwentyFive · 04/01/2025 10:16

Could you not stay at his for the night as a one off if you have a partner who can stay at yours with the kids? It's not fair on the dog or neighbours for him to be left so long.

Mumalorian · 04/01/2025 10:25

Thanks everyone, deep down I knew 12 hours would be too long. I just feel bad their night away might be cancelled.

They haven't ever taken our dog, our dog is only a puppy and is too much for theirs again found this out at Xmas.

As for staying the night that would be fine however their house is extremely messy.

Tell them you'll stay at their house on the proviso it's clean and tidy and you have a freshly made bed made up, money for a takeaway and a bottle of wine in the fridge! Wink

TinyMouseTheatre · 04/01/2025 10:31

Can't you go and stay there for the night so that your DB can go away?

lolacherricoke · 04/01/2025 10:31

Just go and stay there or have the dog at yours it's only one night for goodness sake!!

Bruisername · 04/01/2025 10:37

It’s for one night and it sounds like your DB does the heavy lifting with your dad. Can you really not do this one favour?

TinyMouseTheatre · 04/01/2025 10:37

Sorry I posted before reading the full thread, criminal I know Grin

If it's that messy can you take some clean sheets for the bed, wash up, empty bins and have some packaged food? How messy is it? Is it just stuff left around or dirty too?

For one night? I would just have the dog at your house - especially as it sounds like your dad lives with your brother anyway.

GoogolB · 04/01/2025 10:43

For one night while your father is in hospital, I think you are being very unreasonable.

Thesheerrelief · 04/01/2025 10:43

It sounds like your brother does the lion's share with your dad. In this case, given it's one night, I'd be trying my best to help him out so he can go away. Sounds like the best option is for you to stay over.

JennyPenny222 · 04/01/2025 10:44

It's one night and he's in hospital. I'd just suck it up.

K0OLA1D · 04/01/2025 10:45

I'd just have the dog. It's one night

JennyPenny222 · 04/01/2025 10:46

Or don't ever ever ever ask them for a favour ever again.

TinyMouseTheatre · 04/01/2025 10:47

If your DH is in Hospital and your DB does most of his care normally I think you can either take the DDog fir one night and out up with the barking or go over and depending on how dirty it is, stay the night and get your marigolds on and start scrubbing Flowers

TinyMouseTheatre · 04/01/2025 10:49

Not sure what the fuck that has to do with the thread.

Reported.

Would the dog enjoy the kimchi? Important detail
