Should she replace it? Part 3

1000 replies

Langarg · 02/01/2025 19:09

I can’t believe we have a part 3 🤣 this has provided some lighthearted entertainment at a time where I’m feeling really let down by someone I considered a good friend. So thank you! I have posted an update on thread 2, will post it here also.

I have sent the following text message ‘Having reflected on what you have said, how the airwrap was lost/broken or otherwise is irrelevant. I considered asking you for pictures of the broken airwrap or asking to speak to your sister to ask her what happened but it will get us nowhere. All that matters is I am down a Dyson airwrap and I want a new replacement. You’ll need to either transfer me the £399 tonight to pay for this or purchase it yourself from boots and send me the email receipt this evening. You can then sort out with your sister whether she is going to contribute to the cost of it. We can then put this behind us’

I have no interest in maintaining the friendship after this for obvious reasons. I am worried that she’s seen the thread (how can she not have 🤣) and knows this fine well so will have no intention of replacing it sadly.

I don’t think I’ll ever get the truth (was there even a wedding at this rate?! 🤣) all that matters to me now is getting a replacement airwrap!!!!

You need to end this friendship, block her and buy yourself a new one. She has no intention of forking out anything and will continue to change the story. She has form for forgetting to pay you back in the past and knows what she has done, it’s an expensive lesson but don’t lend out to anyone.
My mum always used to always say don’t borrow what you can’t afford to replace if something goes wrong.

Cotonsugar · 04/01/2025 11:55

You’ve done the right thing in all of this. It strikes me that your friend has started off her marriage lying to her husband too. Who knows what the actual truth is because she has piled lie upon lie. Your life will be better without this so called friend in your life. I guess you won’t be lending anything out ever again😊

Lavenderfarmcottage · 04/01/2025 11:56

I think the reason she went loopy and changed her story is because this thread mentioned ctv

Appleyo · 04/01/2025 11:58

Go on lass! 🏆

DreamTheMoors · 04/01/2025 03:24

This has gotten monotonous.

34 pages into the third of three threads and here we are, right where we began.

I’m beginning to wonder if there ever was a Dyson AirWrap or if we’re all a bunch of suckers.

In fairness, @DreamTheMoors, the first thread was only started 6 days ago, on the 30th of December, so whilst we do have three threads, the OP hasn't had much actual time to deal with things, nor has the CF had a lot of time to replace the AirWrap. It's just that the sheer number of posts makes this seem like it has dragged on - for @Langarg mainly, but us too - for ages.

Joelle84 · 04/01/2025 12:06

Were going to need a part 4….

Itwiznyme · 04/01/2025 12:13

@Langarg have you tried to contact her DH? You mentioned previously that she said she was going to come clean to him right? This is where I would go now and I would make it very clear what your intentions are in regards to having this replaced. You have all the interactions between you so she has accepted liability for losing/breaking or whatever else has happened to it. I would also now send her a very formally worded letter that tells her that since xxxx amount of time has passed and she has failed to respond with a satisfactory outcome your intentions are to do XYZ. Copy her DH into that.

lockdownbabyx · 04/01/2025 12:14

Just saving my spot to read later 😬

OP, small claims process is relatively simple and starts with just a letter from a solicitor stating intentions to claim. Most people would pay up after that as they don’t want it to go further.

it might be worth a call to the CAB as they could help with advice and next steps

@IridiumSky Forgive me if you've already picked up on this, but you said on here yesterday that you were going to buy an AirWrap for your DP, but the Boots £399 offer had ended. A couple of people have since posted that Currys has it on offer for £399 and someone has posted this, this morning:
"Yep - they have it for £399 with a buy now pay off on 12 months option or she can put it on credit for £16pm with currys and free collection within an hour and delivery."
Hope this helps! 😄

Former CA adviser of 10 years here. I posted a link to CA's public site pages on the Small Claims process on here last night. The SC process was designed to be easy for ordinary people to use and to have access to justice without the need for expensive lawyers. There's no need to consult a solicitor, unless OP really wants to, but she wouldn't be able to include the costs of a lawyer as part of her claim (only the court fees can be included in the claim).

AngelicKaty · 04/01/2025 12:33

Needanewname42 · 04/01/2025 10:39

The logical thing would be to get it back on whatever condition it's in.

Call insurance and say it got damaged when Op had friends round, they were trying it out and wine got spilt on it. Op didn't actually see what happened she was in the loo / kitchen at the time.

No need to mention borrowed or anything else. We are just after holiday and party season it's not beyond a reasonable thing to have happened.

You're seriously suggesting OP lie to her insurance company? Sigh. TERRIBLE idea.

sashangel · 04/01/2025 12:35

Have you heard anything since the 2nd?

AngelicKaty · 04/01/2025 12:38

Sorry I should have read to the end Grin

@Weezypopsy Me too - sorry! 😊

Needanewname42 · 04/01/2025 12:40

I can't believe so many are encouraging the drama of going to court.

The friend clearly doesn't have much spare cash. While credit card is an option what does she do if something else breaks?

Even if the court says she needs to pay it at a £10 a month, that's only £120 a year, it's will take years for the Op to get the money to replace the AW.

Pedallleur · 04/01/2025 12:42

devilspawn · 04/01/2025 10:42

She's never going to see that airwrap again let's be realistic.

The first excuse was fake, the second will be too. She wants to keep it or has sold it and there's nothing wrong with it.

Edited

Absolutely this. It would have been returned by now. If only undercover of darkness.

AngelicKaty · 04/01/2025 12:43

Needanewname42 · 04/01/2025 11:34

Because insurance might be easier, quicker and less stressful than trying to take friend to court.

How is committing fraud "less stressful"? You seem to have got your broken moral compass from the same place as CF ..... 🤔

CrowleyKitten · 04/01/2025 12:48

Lostworlds · 02/01/2025 20:00

Don’t understand the sudden hate, the friend should have been honest from the beginning but she messed op around. Op is entitled to feel hurt and annoyed about this.

yep. I'm absolutely sure if, straight away, she said "I'm really sorry, but it's been damaged, I can't pay you back in one chunk, but I'll pay you £100 a month until you're reimbursed" then OP would still be annoyed at the inconvenience, but not angry or hurt the way she has been by all the lies and fabrications.

It's not 'drama', it's the only way she'll get her money.

The court won't tell her to pay in installments, they will tell her to pay.

Why do you think the OP should let this go? It's £500 not a fiver!

Thanks Katy, that’s very thoughtful of you.

I’m confused as there are so many different models and kits. The £480 one I bought is for straight hair and has app connectivity (which my coder-geek wife will like).

This may be only on the newer models, so the offer unit/s might be stock clearance of obsolescent versions. But I’m not really sure.

It’s all so confusing for somebody who’s only a man. If I needed to select a hair appliance for myself, rather than choose between straight, curly, long, short, black, blond, or blue I’d need only to tick the ‘no hair at all’ box. 😀

It’s so easy being a bloke. You ladies have my sympathy. 🤣

So you think the OP should just write off £500?!

Would you be happy if you were in her shoes?
If you are able to write off that large amount then I would feel myself very lucky to be that fortunate.

😂😂😂Ah sorry, I didn't realise you'd already committed to one. Well, it sounds like you've got an even better model and one that will appeal to your DW's nature - TONS of Brownie Points coming your way! 😃PS: Don't know how I managed to quote an entirely irrelevant quote when posting the info' to you - sorry!

Absolutely right.

Were the OP to commit premeditated insurance fraud - a criminal offence - it would be worse than anything the alleged CF did.

A horrible suggestion from an obviously innately dishonest poster.

No i didn't say write it off, get it back in whatever condition it's in, and claim insurance if it's broke or send it back to dyson under warranty.

AutoP1lot · 03/01/2025 18:45

In response to the pps pointing out how to see all op's posts etc, I'm on the app (Android) and it's awful.

I don't have the option to only see the op's posts . And placemarking doesn't work either: even though I've commented myself, every time I reopen the thread it puts me right at the start and I have to manually scroll right through to the end.

If I go into MN through the browser, as soon as I go into chat it sends me back to the app. It's a massive pain.

You can bookmark the last post or any other post and you get taken back to that post when you reopen the thread. Bottom right of the post on your browser or (I think) if you click on the 3 dots on the post if you’re on the app

For whatever reason it's not coming back.
