Gov refuses home office investigation into historic child sex abuse in Oldham

I've just read on x that Jess Phillips has formally declined Oldham council's request for the HO to investigate the grooming gangs in Oldham. Why on Earth would they do this? Apparently JP says it should be a local investigation? Clearly that is a conflict of interests and if the council are asking for help they should?

The only link I can find other than x is GB news (apologies).

Labour REJECTS Oldham's call for Government inquiry into grooming gangs scandal

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips has said Oldham should 'take its own approach' instead

As was just discussed on GB-News just now these gang rapists were made up of 1 in 8 of the men from the Pakistani Community in the Oldham area.

Do you mean that of the total convictions of Pakistani men pertaining to the grooming gangs, that 1 in 8 were in Oldham?

JHound · 02/01/2025 21:28

This is why I support an inquiry. To see if there is validity in this or if it’s the usual knee jerk response whenever any abhorrent crime occurs that involves non-whites - their ethnicity becomes central to the reason people think they acted as they did.

It's attitudes like this that allowed the gang rape of girls to continue for decades. People in authority so scared of being accused of racism that they preferred to ignore horrendous crimes committed against children.

Except it wasn't one crime it was thousands of crimes with many similarities. Some on twitter X are suggesting these crimes by Pakistani Muslims have been going on since the 1960s. They are from tribal, misogynist and racist societies and don't change as soon as they come to Britain. There have been enough enquiries, the last one gave 20 recommendations which weren't acted on. People want to see action, not more talking.

More than welcome to switch on GBnews or watch on catchup "Patric Christys Tonight" if you would like some clarification. Its not for me to spoon feed you.

borisjohnsonsforgottencondom · 02/01/2025 21:35

Someone on X just asked where the Children's charities are, have they been involved at all yet or made any statements?

I'm torn between wanting to research more and wanting to protect myself from the details, as well as the potential that so many have been complicit in covering this up and failing these poor little girls.

Jesus, sorry. It just seems so unlikely for it to be 1 in 8.

@rainingsnoring and @OneAmberFinch If you both want to side line this discussion about political parties and reform. Start a new thead of your own, this is about the victims of disgusting and horedous evil acts of insidious grooming gangs.

FFS

Every single person on here agrees that these acts are disgusting and evil but this is very much a political thread so the majority of posts are political. The political and other failures are extremely relevant to what has happened and the fact that is was allowed to continue over decades. It isn't for you to police other's responses.

Supporting calls for a national enquiry is the “same kind of attitude that allows decades long abuse of girls”?

Ok.

It's not their ethnicity in and if itself. It's their culture (I mean culture in a broad sense, because a truly devout Muslim culture is not like this) which teaches that female = less and and male= important
Teaches that white and Sikh and Hindu girls are worthless subhumans who can be used and exploited with no thought or consequences.

The fact that the wider culture in these towns (local government, social services, police, health) facilitated the large scale abuse of girls because they were too afraid of being called racist and found it easy to view poor white girls as slags and and troublemakers who deserved no support and shouldn't be believed, is also a culture which needs to be named for what it is.

And the culture of Labour politicians minimising or ignoring the real issues there are in how some groups of men ses and treat women, because they calculate that those men can give them what they want (power) and the woman can't (having no power) is also a culture that needs to be recognised and called out.

In my opinion.

Re: your last paragraph - this does not explain why the Tories equally rejected calls for a national enquiry though.

But I am keen to see if the initial parts of your post has a basis in truth which is why I am keen for there to be a national enquiry.

Apologies. I think I mixed you up with a different poster.

But it's pretty obvious that these crimes were ignored for so long because of the ethnicity of the perpetrators and their victims, and reluctance to address what was happening due to fears of accusations of racism. There are videos of journalist interviews with some of the men who were eventually jailed, and the level of contempt they had for the girls is staggering. They viewed them as being completely worthless.

In one video, when asked if there was any truth in the story, the man basically said "of course not, having sex with these girls would be like eating dog shit. and no-one would eat dog shit, would they"

kirbykirby · 02/01/2025 21:49

TreeSquirrel · 02/01/2025 12:32

Ime when a story is only being reported by GB News and amplified by far-right agitators, there is more to it. This is of course a distressing event for the girls involved, but the the government have to look at wider considerations.

These are historic events dating back decades, which have already been investigated. What we don’t want is far-right activists jumping on these for their own racist and xenophobic ends and leading to community and national tensions.

These offences took place decades ago and have been impartially investigated away from the political arena. It’s not surprising that the far right are reluctant to move on, but it is now time to do so. Let’s not give the thugs any further ammunition.

Do you think racism is worse than the mass rape, sodomy, torture and abuse of young girls, some pre-pubescent?

Which is why I want an inquiry because “fear of being seen as racist” does not correlate with other areas - it does not impact things such as incarceration rates, stop and search numbers etc.

So I wonder if this was a genuine fear or a claim made now from authorities who couldn’t be arsed to do their jobs due to these girls being overwhelmingly from poor backgrounds.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 02/01/2025 22:07

Basically Labour or Tory don’t want an enquiry because it might show that:-

Mass immigration of people from conservative Islamic societies is harmful to white girls.

Politicians use Islamic community leaders to control votes in these areas. I’ve been told multiple times that where other family members can’t speak English the patriarch of the family fills in postal votes for them all.

The police collude with above rather than protect girls.

Men are freely able to abuse girls until found out.

I agree but hasn't that been known for years now? It was covered in the previous inquiries:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/grooming-gangs-iicsa-racist-fears-b2007649.html

I'm very open to being corrected, not least as I havent seen todays program, but aren't GB News essentially reporting on the findings of the existing inquiries, then saying there should be an inquiry?

I am entirely open to there being a further, national inquiry if the existing ones are inadequate but I do think the immediate priority should be action based on what has already come to light.

What I do not understand is why so much importance is being put specifically on having the Home Office conduct a local inquiry in Oldham.

OrangeSlices998 · 02/01/2025 22:18

Surely if there is an accusation of ongoing grooming and brutal attacks on girls and women (the transcripts online horrified me) then what’s needed is funds and resources for a task force to investigate and implement the 2022 findings?

CandlesOrangesRedribbon · 02/01/2025 22:18

Ages ago I read about a young girl who ran away from her parents, not sure if it was abuse or fgm. The police took her and spoke to community leader and she was handed back to her parents.
The article said we are giving these girls second class status because of cultural sentiment.

That really struck me.

Unfortunately we are not all born equally in the UK and the un rights of the child are moot.

I really feel the law needs to be fully asserted and it's clear the UK law does not come second to any religious rules or cultural ideas..

I assume Sunworshiper was referring to the claim that (according to X) "1 in 73 Muslim men who live in Rotherham have been prosecuted for grooming gang-related crimes in the past two decades."

No idea if it's true, nothing came up when I googled...
