To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

Mines down, I had a spare day Saturday and I'm back at work Thursday.

Interested to know if it's something your husband will do once you're both back at work or this will fall to you ?

Doggymummar · 31/12/2024 09:24

I usually wait till the day before I go back to work (6th this year ) but did it yesterday

Ellie1015 · 31/12/2024 09:24

Not unreasonable to take them down. And much easier to do now than when back to normal routine for us.

If dh is enjoying them and wants to keep them up a little longer fair enough. If it is to be considered correct then that is pointless and many take them down now.

fairydustt · 31/12/2024 09:25

we took ours down yesterday!

Topseyt123 · 31/12/2024 09:26

My plug in fibre optic tree is the only thing that has gone up here for the last couple of years and I like it that way. It went up mid December and I will be packing it away later today.

lazyarse123 · 31/12/2024 09:27

I'm doing mine today and tomorrow but only because we moved to a park home earlier this year and it's tiny compared to the house we had and everything is cluttered. Next year will be up longer as hopefully we'll be more organised with where to put stuff.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/12/2024 09:28

I'm taking mine down today. I usually wait until after new year but we are going away for a few days on the 2nd and I don't want to have to do it when we get home.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/12/2024 09:28

Ours usually come down on the 6th, but since a Gdc was born on that day it’s more often the 5th or the 7th now.

Our tree is always real, and it only went up on the 17th and still looks fresh and lovely, so I never want to chuck it too early.

I’m not surprised if anyone with fake trees that have been up since the end of November are sick of them by now, though.

I rarely make it to the sixth, who wants to risk not having the time that day and getting bad luck for the rest of the year?

But I won't put them down until at least the second. I like to celebrate the New Year with a bit of bling.

But it's bad luck if you take them down early.
I can't imagine a new year without decorations up.

TwoShades1 · 31/12/2024 09:32

There’s no right or wrong, they are just decorations. Personally I like to have mine down before new year. Feels like a nice clean fresh start for the year.

Kath85 · 31/12/2024 08:27

Nope, ours came down on the 28th. They are Christmas decorations not NY decorations 😊

Yes, but it's still Christmas !

HelloDaisy · 31/12/2024 09:36

I take ours down on New Year’s Day as DH used to always go away on about 4th-9th Jan so I wanted them packed and in the loft before he went.

They’ve been up since 1st December though so we’ve had plenty of time to enjoy them 😊

Samesame47 · 31/12/2024 09:41

Mine come down as soon as possible after Xmas, I only leave them up
if we are having visitors for belated Xmas celebrations.
I had to go out all day Boxing Day and came home to the lovely surprise that DH had packed Xmas away and hoovered up
all the evidence.
He knows it’s a job I hate so was very grateful to come to it all being done 😬

MrsToothyBitch · 31/12/2024 09:49

Ours are coming down at the weekend, probably on Sunday, before I head back to work on the 7th. We always have them up over New Years with cards out til 12th Night but we're not properly back to work till w/c 6th this time so they'll all stay til the weekend with the cards down night of the 6th. I often have the decs down on the 2nd-3rd.

We decorated on the 14th so we don't put them up especially early. I think it's sad if they're down before New Years Day. I think it's bizarre how many people are raring to go and have Christmas stuff up after Halloween practically or certainly into November (not just Americans at Thanksgiving) but whip the lot down by Dec 27th and say "not a day too soon" with a straight face. One of my friends who was a late Nov/ 1st Dec put up de-decced yesterday and has already arranged her mantlepiece to "welcome spring". It's still Dec 2024 at time of writing and I am still playing epiphany carols.

I suppose there's no right or wrong way but I think some people get so into the build up and do it soooo early that they actually get a bit out of step with the "season". And I say this as someone who often manages their take down around going back to work.

SnaccidentsHappen · 31/12/2024 09:50

I started taking things down on 28th and it was all away by last night - usually I would leave it longer but like you and a lot of others now, it goes up very early December so I was more than ready to put it away.

KimberleyClark · 31/12/2024 09:53

We were a bit late putting ours up this year - 21 December and it is staying up until Twelfth Night.

fuckingidiotseverywhere · 31/12/2024 09:54

Ours came down yesterday, glad to see the back of them tbh! I haven't felt Christmas at all this year with illness and other issues going on. Really glad to have my living space back to normal!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 31/12/2024 09:54

OP - you can exactly what you want.
We usually put ours up on Christmas Eve but were a few days early this year (22nd). Will take down on 12th night as always.

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 31/12/2024 09:54

Yes my tree stays up until the epiphany, but I don't put it up super early. I like enjoying the festive season. I've seen people putting their Christmas decorations up the second Halloween is over and then pulling them down on boxing day, which to me is madness.

But it's your house so you do what you want.

OTannenbaumOTannenbaum · 31/12/2024 09:55

Mine are going down today. I like it away for the start of the New Year for some reason.

LinnettdeBelleforte · 31/12/2024 09:57

I only put mine up on the 22nd, and I never take them down until Epiphany. I think that your husband is correct. Next time, I would put the tree up later rather than take it down earlier. I always feel the need to drag a little of the festivity into the bleak first days of January.

LaineyCee · 31/12/2024 10:05

Tree always stays till Twelfth Night in my house. If feel you need decorations down to get back to normal, maybe the problem is the volume of decorations in the first place.

YourGladSquid · 31/12/2024 10:07

I would never take them down before the 6th but to be honest we keep it the whole of January. We like the lights.

Xanadu58 · 31/12/2024 10:10

I took ours down yesterday .

DomPom47 · 31/12/2024 10:16

We put them up last weekend of November and took them all down yesterday and had a tidy up of Christmas related things. I say go for it and put them away.
