To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

The idea is that the decorations come down on the 6th Jan as that is the Epiphany. It took the wise men 12 days once they followed the star to the Baby Jesus and it's supposed to be bad luck to take your decorations down before then. Though if you're not religious or superstitious then it obviously doesn't matter. I like to keep mine up til Jan 2nd. Its Christmas week and I like to finally relax and enjoy Christmas and still feel festive now that I'm off work. Some people put them up early and take them down early because they are sick of looking at them. I prefer to put them up a bit later and actually enjoy them over Christmas. Each to their own though.

I've wanted ours down since about 5pm on Christmas Day 🤣 they'll be coming down on Thursday, seems a shame because our tree has been lovely this year

theeyeofdoe · 31/12/2024 08:44

We always take them down in the 1st.

CheeseTime · 31/12/2024 08:44

Christmas anything seems wrong after 25th. I held out until yesterday and enjoyed my day of cleaning and putting the house back to order. That’s my new year feeling. 🌟

raya223 · 31/12/2024 08:45

Ours came down yesterday. I normally wait until the 2nd Jan but so glad they are down now

Iwishiwasagiraffe · 31/12/2024 08:45

Mine came down yesterday. I like to go into new year with a clean house. My mum loves going into new year with the sparkly tree. My sister took all her decs down on Boxing Day! Everyone is different

HelloCheekyCat · 31/12/2024 08:46

Ours came down yesterday, would have done it Sunday but we couldn't be bothered! If happily have it all away on boxing day. As soon as Christmas day is done I want it back to normal

Wednesdaysotherchild · 31/12/2024 08:48

Put them up the week before Christmas and take them down on the 6th -as per the tradition - it’s called the 12 days of Christmas for a reason! You lot are all peaking too soon, frankly 🤣

ShadesmarBead · 31/12/2024 08:50

Mine will come down on the 2nd, bar the real life greenery that is dotted around the house. I take that down on the 5th and will burn it before sunset (when 12th night starts).
Not even remotely pagan or superstitious but I do enjoy a ceremonial burning of stuff to mark the end to the Christmas season.

Vettrianofan · 31/12/2024 08:51

Once my eldest is back from the States in a few day's time, we will take down the tree. Probably 3rd January. Never before NYD!!

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 31/12/2024 08:51

Ours went up on 30th Nov and will come down on 1st Jan although I'd leave the tree up longer as I love it! 🎄

DustyLee123 · 31/12/2024 08:52

Mine has gone. I like to start the new year all clean and tidy.

bigkidatheart · 31/12/2024 08:52

Mine is coming down this afternoon after I finish work, i'm sick of it, the lights havent been turned on on the tree since boxing day

ChristmasFluff · 31/12/2024 08:54

Mie have been up since the end of November, and I will begin taking them down on the 5th Jan, finish on the 6th.

When I was working full time, I used to take them down before going back to work in the New Year for purely practical reasons and to get back into 'work' mode. Since being semi-retired I leave them up as long as possible. There's plenty of months with no Christmas decorations.

Strikeoutnow · 31/12/2024 08:55

Still Christmas for me & it would feel odd to celebrate NYE without a tree & decor. But my tree is the appropriate size for my house & other decorations are off the floor eg hanging so they aren’t in my way.

I will take them down this weekend & my council tree collection isn’t till next week anyway.

I agree. It's a shame that once Christmas Day is over you never hear any Christmas songs on the radio, having been played since about November 1st 🤣 & people can't wait to take down the decs when Christmas is really just beginning

neverbeenskiing · 31/12/2024 08:56

Ours usually come down New Years day. We like to get them down and have a good clean before we both go back to work.

DappledThings · 31/12/2024 08:56

I never take anything down before Epiphany. Even after all my years on MN I'm still surprised by so many who do it early.

Gizlotsmum · 31/12/2024 08:57

Only reason mine aren’t coming down today is we are away. I love starting the new year with a clean house

Lessismoree · 31/12/2024 08:57

Mine were down on 27th .

Strikeoutnow · 31/12/2024 08:58

I never understand why decorations get in the way of cleaning or how they cause so much dirt! 😆

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2024 08:59

And thank Christ for it!!!

ThatJoyousScroller · 31/12/2024 08:59

The random decorations are down and slowly being packed away. But the tree always stays up until 12th night. Well, actually probably take it down on Sunday. We don’t however put the tree up until around the 10th of December

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 31/12/2024 09:00

Apparently the twelfth night superstition is fairly modern and before that decorations stayed up until Candlemas on the 2nd February!

I'll take the tree down this weekend in time for school on Monday, but might keep some fairy lights up outside and in - January is such a long, depressing month, it definitely needs a bit of twinkle.

Nothelpingishard · 31/12/2024 09:00

Decs came down yesterday, tree down today. Start the new year with a fresh house. I do leave twinkly lights up until the world stops being so dark though.
