To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

We always take ours down on the 1st or 2nd. We leave the fairy lights till February though.

OldTinHat · 31/12/2024 09:05

Mine came down on Sunday.

Unicornsandprincesses · 31/12/2024 09:06

I’ve just taken down and put everything away except for the tree and some lights, which I’ll do at the weekend.

it already feels 100% tidier! I was feeling overwhelmed by all the mess, kids toys, decorations.

Strikeoutnow · 31/12/2024 09:06

People who take the tree down very earlier, what do you do with it? Or do you tend to not have a real one?

Onlyvisiting · 31/12/2024 09:06

Depends on who else is in your house.
My parents used to barely get them up by Christmas eve and I woke up some years to them being taken down and all cleared up for boxing day. Just felt really sad and scroogelike. Let's squash that festive cheer ASAP! Can't sustain jollity for any longer than the bare minimum.
I'd be fine with 31st Dec, make it a new year thing.
But I also wouldn't put them up until a week, maybe 10 days before Christmas. If they went up early December I'm bit suprised you are sick of it.

stayathomer · 31/12/2024 09:07

Our neighbours all have theirs down, I’ll probably do it at the weekend because school is back the 6th

Apparently the twelfth night superstition is fairly modern and before that decorations stayed up until Candlemas on the 2nd February!

I'll take the tree down this weekend in time for school on Monday, but might keep some fairy lights up outside and in - January is such a long, depressing month, it definitely needs a bit of twinkle.

I found this out last year, and decided to do the same. Well, just the tree. It was absolutely lovely, and I’m doing the same this year.

We have a real tree, cut at the farm, and it lasts right through - no problem.

lavenderlou · 31/12/2024 09:08

No, always leave them up for new year. Will probably take them down at the weekend as working on 6th January.

Dinosweetpea · 31/12/2024 09:08

Ours will stay until the 5th.

Bey · 31/12/2024 09:09

Ours are coming down today I'm looking forward to it. I'd have taken them down sooner but we had family round yesterday for a festive get together.

BellissimoGecko · 31/12/2024 09:11

Ours stay up until 12th night. But we don't put them up early.

MoonAndSaturn · 31/12/2024 09:15

I can't imagine not having them up for the few days in between Christmas and New Year - these days are Christmas for me! In my mind New Year's Eve involves Christmas decorations.

I'll probably start taking ours down on 2nd January. I rarely wait until Twelfth Night anymore, although the kids aren't back at school until 6th Jan this year, so they might last a couple of days longer than usual!

CleftChin · 31/12/2024 09:16

Mine's up, I'll probably take it down at the weekend - although sometimes I've been shoving the tree into the back garden on the evening of the 6th!

Naijamama · 31/12/2024 09:17

Ours stay up until the Epiphany, but I don't put them up until Christmas eve, so they're not up for long

FastnetLundyRockall · 31/12/2024 09:17

Ours always come down on New Year’s Eve to start a fresh new year. Also the Christmas tree is getting a bit smelly now as we’ve had it for a few weeks

RampantIvy · 31/12/2024 09:17

TeenToTwenties · 31/12/2024 08:28

4 weeks is more than enough.
Which is why ours have only been up 10 days so far.

Same. I like Christmas to be at Christmas, not for several weeks.

I will be taking ours down tomorrow and put away before DH's birthday.

DowntonCrabbie · 31/12/2024 09:17

Kath85 · 31/12/2024 08:27

Nope, ours came down on the 28th. They are Christmas decorations not NY decorations 😊

Christmas doesn't end until 6 Jan

HermoinePotter · 31/12/2024 09:19

We never go into Hogmanay with the decorations up, the house is decluttered from Christmas and cleaned top to bottom for the New Year.

FlyingHighintheSkyy · 31/12/2024 09:19

Oh no, definitely January 6th here. I could never imagine taking them down just after Boxing Day as it’s still the Christmas season or celebrating New Year’s Eve with no decorations. I will slowly take a few bits down in the next few days though.

K0OLA1D · 31/12/2024 09:20

Mine are coming down today. Bit late this year. It's normally around the 30th but we were busy yesterday.

I have never had my decs up past NYE

Olika · 31/12/2024 09:20

I already told everybody everything is coming down on the 1st.

Doitrightnow · 31/12/2024 09:21

DH prefers to put decorations up only a few days before Christmas and keeps them up until 6th Jan.

I prefer to put them up a few weeks before Christmas and take them down on 27th.

What we actually do varies from year to year.

Ours does. As soon as the new year is here, that's it until next year.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 31/12/2024 09:22

I'm thinking about taking all decorations down today except the tree.

I want to do a declutter but the tree is a real one and is still going strong!

Onceuponatimethen · 31/12/2024 09:23

We keep ours up and take down for Twelfth Night.
