To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

OP posts:
FelixtheAardvark · 31/12/2024 10:17

Everything comes down on 1st Jan here.

peachystormy · 31/12/2024 10:18

Am taking mine down as soon as I have unpacked our holiday cases

Cheshire71 · 31/12/2024 10:20

Ours came down on Sunday. Nice to have the house back to normal.

Marchweshall · 31/12/2024 10:21

We took ours down Boxing Day. It’s always nice to get the house back to normal.

Behindthethymes · 31/12/2024 10:22

I just don’t feel New Year energy so it makes no sense to me to take down Christmas things yet. We have a few more lazy, semi-hibernation days to go yet.

Minimum50 · 31/12/2024 10:24

I've never taken my tree down as late as 6th January. I think once I still had it up on NYD - usually I like it down no later than NYE and it has been down on boxing day on a few occasions.

I get sick of Christmas decorations if they are up too long - I like them up the last two weeks in December only.

SongSungBlues · 31/12/2024 10:24

After 1st January I start taking things down and putting them away gradually, leaving the tree to last. That will be down by the weekend.

Then we start Wassail season!

4 weeks is more than enough.
Which is why ours have only been up 10 days so far.

Ditto. Not surprised the OP is fed up of them since they were put up so early. I will stop putting on the porch Christmas lights (last night tonight) and take stuff down at the weekend.

On a happier note I discovered a tin of honey roasted cashews and a box of celebrations yesterday, I am either losing my marbles or getting better at hiding stuff. 🙂

Christmas has been a loooooong time coming through December I feel like DC have had something every bloody day since late November.

The decs are going down today so I can start new year with a clean, organized house and hope it continues throughout!

Those that keep their decorations up longer either probably have bigger houses than me and therefore don't have to move shit around to fit in the tree.

Nothatgingerpirate · 31/12/2024 10:32

They are already gone.

piscofrisco · 31/12/2024 10:34

Mine will come down tomorrow and Friday. I'm actually fed up of them now but it feels wrong not to have them up for New Year's Eve. It's a two day job anyway as there are alot!

Mine will come down on 2nd January, after our NY guests have left. If people are sick of them already, why do they put them up so early? Mine go up on about the 15th.

Because the build up during the time before is the fun bit. Once Christmas is finished, its time to move on (and Christmas is finished when we decide - between Christmas Day and new Year - not when tradition dictates).

PaterPower · 31/12/2024 10:45

Mine were packed away on the 27th. I’ve got a busy January ahead so just wanted them down and out of the way.

Thegiantofillinois · 31/12/2024 10:45

Mine go down nyd. They usually go up around the 15th and I do about 2 weeks of them. I used to do the 6th, but there's something quite bleak about Xmas decs in Jan. Must be the light.

I don't get the down on boxing day thing though, although maybe that's people who put them up really early.

I'm looking forward to the kids being older so I don't have to decorate at all. The more I look at them, the more ridiculous they seem. Maybe I just just bring in a yule log and holly.

TabloidFootprints · 31/12/2024 10:48

I love the 12 days of Christmas and I hate that Christmas starts so early that people are tired of it by Epiphany. Mine go up on around 16 Dec and down on Jan 5 or 6, can never remember which and have to check every year. This was perfectly normal when I was little but increasingly I feel like an adherent of some strange cult.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/12/2024 10:51

My parents always insisting on leaving their decorations up until twelfth night and took them down on 6th January - otherwise there would be bad luck.

Whilst I don't subscribe to this belief, I have noticed than since I starting taking our own decorations down earlier, the world has been plagued by bad luck e.g. a multitude of problems in the Middle East, conflicts in Afganistan, Iraq, Libya, the continent of African, then there's climate change, Covid, the Curse of Strictly, etc.

I don't think it would be fair for me to be blamed for all of these, although I suppose it could be the collective power of 'early removal of decorations'. I don't know.

Berlinlover · 31/12/2024 10:52

I’m in Ireland and it’s unheard of to take Christmas decorations down before 6 January. My step daughter in England took hers down yesterday.

CrispieCake · 31/12/2024 11:14

Our tree and decorations will stay up until Candlemas. We've been visiting relatives for most of the festive period and tbh I'm looking forward to some more "Christmas" at home in my own house.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/12/2024 11:17

I usually put them up on the 1st or what ever weekend is closest and down on 31st. This year they went up 30th and down yesterday. It was hard as they looked lovely and cosy but I wanted my house back to normal to feel fresh for the new year.

Tagyoureit · 31/12/2024 11:18

I wouldn't mind taking the tree down but I'd like to leave the window lights up for longer as January is just so miserable, the lights are nice!

DumpedByText · 31/12/2024 11:20

I took mine down two days ago!!

gingerlybread · 31/12/2024 11:20

Took ours down early for the first time ever this year- they usually stay up till Epiphany but we have a funeral on 6th and it would be completely miserable.

DonnaGiovanna · 31/12/2024 11:21

It's the seventh day of Christmas 🎄

Ponoka7 · 31/12/2024 11:22

I'd normally wait until Candlemas, but I haven't felt Christmassy as much this year. They went up on the 23rd. I'll take them down on Friday. I'll miss the twinkly lights on the fire surround etc, though. So I might keep up a candle holder and two larger candles.
