To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

We took ours down today. Normally they stay up until 12th Night but the weather is awful here (NZ) supposed to be summer so I thought it would be something to do until the rain stops.

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 31/12/2024 08:33

Took most of them down yesterday mainly as we are a bit cramped right now mid renovation and needed the space back. Left a few lights up and a few more 'wintery' ornaments. I can't leave them up more than a few days after Xmas!

MuddlingThroughLife · 31/12/2024 08:34

Mine always come down before new year to make room for our party. However, I always leave a few things out until 6th Jan. This year I've left out the Christmas cards, snowman loo seat stickers and Christmas handwashes in bathroom and toilet .

I rarely make it to the sixth, who wants to risk not having the time that day and getting bad luck for the rest of the year?

But I won't put them down until at least the second. I like to celebrate the New Year with a bit of bling.

Me. There is no such thing as bad luck and we didn't put them up until the day before actual Christmas, so definitely not had enough yet.

Do what you want! I don’t think it’s too early,
I like having the lights up for NYE though so generally take them down 1st Jan

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 31/12/2024 08:34

I love taking them down New Year's Eve, there's something lovely about waking up on new year's day with a fresh start and nothing left over from last year ❤️

Mine aren't down yet but will be soon.
Take yours down whenever you like, there's no hard and fast rules.

Mine come down New Years Day

Beaverbridge · 31/12/2024 08:35

Oh finishes work at 3 today, so tonight they, ll be coming down. Fed up looking at them now.

Disturbia81 · 31/12/2024 08:35

Always 1st jan, new year freshness. I like to see them all of December. And any later feels weird.

BananaNirvana · 31/12/2024 08:35

Took them down Sunday and was back at work yesterday!

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2024 08:35

I don’t really get the ‘take them down as soon as I’ve finished my turkey’ fashion, but if I did I still wouldn’t do it on actual New Year’s Eve.

I didn't want them up at all. They were only up a week and then gone.

Mine were taken down yesterday and the rest today. We had extended family over after Christmas so we always have the decorations up for that.

I like to start January with nothing remaining of Christmas. Christmas is December, not January. Plus Dh is always off work the same weeks the children are off from school so he and the children are here to help take it down.

Mine will come down on 2nd January, after our NY guests have left. If people are sick of them already, why do they put them up so early? Mine go up on about the 15th.

Because Christmas celebrations for me and this house are a December thing, so the tree is up for pretty much all of December. Once boxing day is done with, our Christmas celebrations are over.

If I was hosting NYE guests I'd leave them up, but we will likely be in bed by 10pm tonight.

YellowPixie · 31/12/2024 08:39

Go for it, we will probably be taking it all down this evening, DH is on call with work which means staying at home and sober.

You will get loads of MN who will bleat on about how Christmas only starts on 25th December and how they are still feasting/celebrating on the 3rd/4th/5th January but there are no hard and fast rules despite what they'll tell you.

BunnyLake · 31/12/2024 08:39

Mine are coming down on the 2nd. This is why I don’t put the tree up early. It goes up a week before Christmas otherwise I’d be sick of the sight of it by Christmas day.

TheUsualChaos · 31/12/2024 08:39

Usually wait until 12th night or the day before if I'm working. Don't really understand taking everything down right after Christmas. It's the 12 days of Christmas, not just one day. Meant to be a period of time to enjoy. Think the problem is it just all starts so early. I'm not going to put tree up as early next year. Tried to do it 1st December and it felt way too soon.

x2boys · 31/12/2024 08:39

I always put mine up really late this year was Xmas eve! New years eve and Day are still Xmas imo I'll take them down Thursday.

Funkyslippers · 31/12/2024 08:40

WoahThreeAces · 31/12/2024 08:27

Will start taking stuff down today and finish tomorrow. Can't be doing with Christmas in January

Yeah, damn those 12 days of Christmas 🤣

Eviebeans · 31/12/2024 08:40

Inside stuff went up on 21st December
outside stuff went up the week before that
all down by 28th

Sallyingon · 31/12/2024 08:41

We normally hold out for the 12th night, but we are away at the weekend and back at work on Thursday. I think it would probably work out better if we did it on the 1st, but that does feel a bit sad

Upstartled · 31/12/2024 08:42

Dotto · 31/12/2024 08:34

I don't believe in bad luck either but the curse of bad luck keeps the show on the road here. If the house isn't clean on Nye, it'll remain a mess for the rest of the year. If you don't open the door at midnight, you won't let the good luck in. If you don't take the decorations down by the 7th, you're in for it. And on it goes. It seems the corrective for all the wishes you get for mixing Christmas cakes and blowing out candles. Coming from a family of atheists, there seem to be a lot of inherited threats traditions. 😁

MumChp · 31/12/2024 08:42

Do.
Our are down.

BeyondMyWits · 31/12/2024 08:42

I do it by stealth... cards come down, advent stuff, anything with Christmas or bells or wreath. We end up with lights and tree. That will stay up 'til Friday.
