Should she replace it?

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

I think I’m going to need bite the bullet and send this message or similar.

I do wonder if some posters may be on to something and she’s maybe kept it for herself? I didn’t even consider this a possibility. Surely no one would be so brazen?!

Have you rang the hotel to see if she reported it, speak volumes if she didn’t.

The OP has started a second and third thread on this now, basically the friend lent the airwrap to her sister who broke it

MisterPNumber23 · 04/01/2025 12:31

Why has she started new threads when this one still has quite a bit of space?

Lickityspit · 04/01/2025 12:32

She has so kept it. She needs to replace it for a new one ASAP

Bennetty · 04/01/2025 13:41

If she can pay £50 for 3 months for an old model, she can pay £50 a month for 10 months to get you a new one. Suggest she get a no interest loan from a family member instead of a credit card.

Purplebunnie · 04/01/2025 13:44

I'm not good at linking but there are 2 more threads, you may want to pop over there

Pherian · 04/01/2025 13:48

She should replace with the model you had. I bought my airwrap as a Dyson refurb. I’d check that section.

Her debt isn’t your problem. She should have taken care of your belongings while they were in her possession.

Id call the hotel as well.

For those at the back

@Purplebunnie

It's worth a try 😁

FlyingFox · 04/01/2025 14:05

No she should bloody well replace it with what you had and pay it off on her credit card she can get a zero percent card or something. I would not accept anything less you were kind enough to lend it to her, she lost it!

Noflukeforthenuke · 04/01/2025 14:43

Surprisedcupcake · 30/12/2024 17:00

Sounds like either way this friendship is probably going to take a dive, so you may as well get a replacement you're happy with 😬

Agree with this.

if I were her, I’d buy a new replacement- no question.

rookiemere · 30/12/2024 17:00

Ooh tricky one. Can you ask her if she can claim on her home insurance for the loss?
I think a compromise would be that she pays for the £150 air wrap up front.

You might as well buy a new, not Dyson one for the moment.

Auds92 · 04/01/2025 15:45

I'd definitely expect her to pay for a new one £500 is a lot of money for to claim she (lost it) I'd be saying they she can either give you money or you will have to report it as stolen be harsh I wonder how easy she'd frow the friendship away don't take crap stand you're ground babe

Jolly29 · 04/01/2025 16:33

I Feel she should replace it, I mean she didn't even tell you she lost it in the first place, you had to ask her for it back.
Anyway how did you pay for it in the first place? If it was on your CC you might be able to claim yourself.

Unicornsanddiscoballs91 · 04/01/2025 17:10

If i did this to a 'friends' item, I'd probably default bills and most definitely get into debt to buy a new one, and I'd give you some flowers too!!

Sorry OP but she's not much of a friend if she can't even try and make this right 😬

BaileyHorse · 04/01/2025 17:11

YANBU she owes you a brand new Dyson Airwrap. Like you I use mine day to day for both hair drying and styling. Also to me it sounds suspicious as why didn’t she tell you that initially. If that had happened to me and I had lost something like that of a friends then I would be absolutely mortified! She doesn’t sound like she’s too bothered tbh.

Mustbeoriginal38 · 04/01/2025 17:28

I don't believe for a minute that she's contacted the hotel. She has the airwrap and is keeping it for herself. Her spouse is probably totally unaware of the mess she's made. She may even be passing off the airwrap as a lovely gift you gave her for the wedding since she couldn't afford a hairdresser.

Check out the post above yours.
This has gone way way past contacting the hotel

Hopefully this thread will close soon.

Mummykit96 · 04/01/2025 21:45

Give her 24hours to replace or transfer the money even suggest a very acct or little woods as first order discount gets her 20% off said item

id say from the sounds of it she’s potentially lying so as to keep yours or she was just careless either way friendship is dead now
