Should she replace it?

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

I think she should absolutely replace it. Dyson sell refurbished ones via their eBay shop which cost £280…. saves her a little bit on full price.

@surreygirl1987 I think Baz may well be the friend's partner. What a fking pair.

Jeez. If that is actually the case... how low can you go 🙈

That was my thought too.

Me too.
Hence the lack of intention to replace . You must insist that she pays you in full.

Is there a possibility she has broken it and came up with this story? Same difference she needs to replace it like with like!

Sorry I broke/lost it but I've bought you a refurbished one to save me some money! And now I have a 400/500 appliance for half price. Just no!

Was the friend given a reconditioned Dyson Air Wrap?

NO!

Can we please stop with the suggestions of second hand/reconditioned/market place versions of the Dyson Air Wrap that might save the CF'ker money. She could pay for a new one using a credit card but that would 'put her into debt' which is precisely what a credit card is for!!!!

Happy new year to you all.

Kirstk · 31/12/2024 21:37

What's the bet she didn't even leave it and has tried to keep it...

crockofshite · 31/12/2024 21:37

Small claims court.

Cazz1953 · 31/12/2024 21:45

She needs to replace it with a new one. Don’t lend her anything else.

savethatkitty · 31/12/2024 21:47

She didn't leave it at the hotel. She took it for herself. And hoped you wouldn't say anything!

or sold it for a quick buck

valentinka31 · 31/12/2024 21:48

omg. She doesn't want to be 'in debt' on her credit card? Well she is in debt to you to the tune of one Dyson Airwrap, so she needs to buy one, give you it and then take time paying off her credit card, that's it. Her mistake, her responsibility.

Laura95167 · 31/12/2024 22:00

She only admitted this after you persued her. She isn't remorseful, responsible or accountable.

This isn't your mistake to fix. You aren't putting her in debt, her inability to look after things did

Will you stop this nonsense? The position she was in was owning an Air Wrap she’d owned from new. That’s what she should end up with, not a pre owned Air Wrap. Are people genuinely this stupid?

Or conveniently kept it to do her hair for NYE, then will "find" it and give it back on 2nd

MOST people aren't this stupid...

No she doesn't. This would give her a refurbished one (which could mean one that had a fault that had to be fixed). As I've already mentioned (and which you've ignored) it would also mean a lesser warranty than the OP currently has left on hers. It is therefore NOT like for like. It's a better option than some randomer on FB marketplace, but if the OP wanted a refurbished one from the Ebay Dyson Outlet, she would have bought one of those originally herself.

Wingingit247 · 31/12/2024 22:17

LittleRedYarny · 30/12/2024 17:00

You kindly lent it to her because she couldn’t afford a hairdresser for her wedding day, she was (seemingly) fully aware it was a loan not a gift and has acted carelessly - she 100% should replace it with a new one (not a second hand old model off scammy Facebook that you will be initially expected to pay for) and bugger feeling mean that she’s going into debt to do so.
