Should she replace it?

Langarg · 30/12/2024 16:57

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

She's not really driving to the hotel..

Yes and if it magically turns up (which it will) tell her you'll put in a formal complaint to the Hotel for making her drive a 4 hour round trip because of their incompetence of locating the Airwrap....she's dug herself in to this hole

Tricho · 31/12/2024 20:10

The funny thing is, betterment applies to big ticket items.

Cars, rooves, life insurance even

Not a fucking dyson airwrap

Unlucky bazdvd, hand in pocket time

Ong yes, say you'll ring the manager

Doxiedolittle · 31/12/2024 20:10

Why on earth did you buy a Dyson airwrap? They’re ridiculously overpriced and under-engineered. I should know I bought one for me and one for my daughter 2 years ago. Both have not lasted (hers after a year mine 2 - I used it less) and Dyson customer service is totally shite. If your friend doesn’t replace it, cut your losses and treat yourself to the shark version - just like the hoovers they’re 10 times better and less than half the price. In terms of lending stuff my old mum used to say lend at your peril and be prepared not to get it back in the same condition. In this case if at all.

thescandalwascontained · 31/12/2024 20:14

Please please please don't leave us hanging. Start a new thread if you have to! Must know if CH 'magically' finds the 'missing' airwrap.

Not the point is it? It's entirely up to the OP what she spends her money on

She should replace your exact model without grumbling!

This. You were doing her a big favour and she messed up so you are not left out of pocket. She should claim on her house insurance.

menopausalfart · 30/12/2024 20:46

Like she'd drive all that way. 😂

That's what I was thinking. Instead of calling them "again" (or for the first time), she's going to take a 4 hour round trip just to speak to the manager in person?

She's going to sit cozy at home & then, after an appropriate amount of time, will call you to tell you that the hotel "miraculously" found it.

Soubriquet · 31/12/2024 20:32

So…..did the hotel magically find the air wrap and now she’s able to give it back?

LookItsMeAgain · 31/12/2024 20:34

@Langarg - if you do need to create a second thread to let us know the outcome of this situation - I recommend using the thread title "All Dyson Air Wrapped Up"...

...though that might not be as funny as I originally thought 😂

Maybe there will be others along who could come up with a better title for the second thread

Thank you for helping my 2025 start with a laugh

I wouldn't personally and the value would be down to your insurance. Cars and small appliances don't count the same. Hence why betterment doesn't apply

Oink oink

pimplebum · 31/12/2024 20:38

When she is “ on her way to the hotel “ I would messaged her 1 hour and 30 mins into that fictitious journey and say you will see her when you arrive
tell her your partner loved the look of the hotel so much he surprised you with a new year get away Surprise!!! I have a nice bottle of champagne waiting for you both to toast your big ( sorry small ) day

ring the hotel again and ask them how many guest were at the wedding ….

Petlover9 · 31/12/2024 20:40

A bit off topic but in 2003 I had a brand new Volvo estate, had saved up for a few years. Joined an evening class a few weeks later and became friendly with a woman there who had trouble with her car and rung me to ask to borrow my car to take her 9 year old child to school!! She lived in a flat with road parking, which is how her car got damaged and expected me to loan her my car for a week! She told everyone in the evening class that I wasn't much of a friend, but many spoke up and said that they would not loan a car to anyone, least of all someone they had known for only a few weeks. She avoided me for the remainder of the Course. Some people have the cheek of the devil. I think the OP should get the £500 from CF 'friend' and buy a new hairdryer, or make her put one on her credit card.

Erm... what a weird question to ask the OP, when you go on to mention that you bought one (actually, 2!) yourself!:

Incredible if, like you say, she’s a massive MN user and is reading this thread!! Hahahaha

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/12/2024 20:59

I must be tight as hell because if and when I buy an expensive hairdryer I wouldn’t lend it to anyone, let alone someone who already has firm for being a CF.

The point being it’s no loss. They don’t last and as I said at the end, don’t lend stuff if you expect to get it back.

That's crazy. You have no idea what condition a second hair pair would be in, or if they're even genuine. You can't guarantee 'like for like'.

Also, as I said earlier in this thread, the warranty is part of what the OP paid for. She's has this airwrap for less than a year. When bought from new, it's a 2 year warranty, so she has MORE THAN A YEAR left on her warranty. To replace like-for-like, the 'friend' would need to factor the warranty in as well.

Your opinion on how good or bad the airwrap is is completely irrelevant... surely you can see that? 🙈

@surreygirl1987 I think Baz may well be the friend's partner. What a fking pair.
