Should she replace it?

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

A few people on this thread have loaned items and then the item gets lost/broken. What's wrong with people that they don't/won't take care of borrowed things. Is everything they own broken, damaged or 'borrowed'?

The pawned shoes was an equally entertaining thread.

A second hand one that could be fake/broken? I think not.

HoundsOfHelfire · 31/12/2024 18:41

Has she got insurance of any kind?

She may need to log it with the police first

peachystormy · 31/12/2024 18:41

Yes I think OP it's going to 'magically' turn up after her visit. Or after she's used it for NYE 🤣

The “friend” wasn’t lent a second hand one. She was lent one that was bought brand new and that’s what she should return - either the one she borrowed or a replacement. If OP would be happy with a second hand appliance she’d have bought one in the first place.

Tricho · 31/12/2024 18:45

Imagine if this was a fake story by Dyson social team designed to drum up interest! Type of thing the daily mail would pick up in a heartbeat 🤣🤣🤣

Mumoftwoandcats · 31/12/2024 18:45

I don’t think she left it at all. I think she’s kept it. She must 100% replace it, or give you the value of it. You said she has taken advantage of your good nature in the past, so let this be the last time she has the chance to.
My motto is never a lender nor a borrower be. Good luck!

Do you work for an insurance company? An expensive item loaned by a friend who should be out of pocket for doing someone with form for being a CF a favour? Have got £500 I can borrow? I promise you I will give it you back, honest!!

UtterJoke · 31/12/2024 18:49

Oh I'd love to see OPs friend's face when she comes across this post 🤣 Busted

Edited

Probably not. Someone who worked for an insurance company would understand the concept of a new for old policy.

Roll on the 2nd!

My first thought was that the friend has kept it for herself.

Same. She has either kept it or she has sold it. She is not a friend and is taking the bloody piss. She will have to buy OP a new one, if that means putting it on a credit card that’s a real shame, then I would be cutting her off…..

Sunbeam01 · 31/12/2024 18:53

Calamitousness · 30/12/2024 16:59

She is massively unreasonable. It was in her care. She lost it. She pays for a new one. No question.

This.

Isobel201 · 30/12/2024 18:23

I agree, I've still got a cheap hair dryer that I bought in 2007 and it still works. I don't use it very often as I just let my hair dry naturally - its only if I'm going out and need a quick blow dry if its still wet and cold outside.

You've probably got easy hair like me and didn't realise how big a difference a good hairdryer makes until I had a daughter with curly coarse hair. She spends 2 hours diffusing her hair usually but a 300 quid hairdryer has knocked it down to 20 minutes!
But I also think people can send their money how they like

Ariela · 31/12/2024 18:57

Would you happen to be driving past your friend's house on 2nd? I bet the car is still there at home....

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 31/12/2024 19:02

I’ve read all the OP updates and 100% think she’s still got it. No way will she be doing a 4hr round trip but it will magically turn up. She was hoping you’d let it go!

HashtagShitShop · 31/12/2024 19:04

Ah those magic 3d carpets the exact same shade as boxes get me everytime (!!!) she wants to get her new husband to the opticians after she's given you the air wrap back when it 'magically' turns up 🙄

pimplebum · 31/12/2024 19:07

I nearly bought one those infrared face masks off marketplace for £25 usually retail for £250- £350
i got a private message from a nice person linking me to “ fakes” and how dangerous they are literally could electrocute my face or burn my house down

I would NOT accept a £150 off Facebook it could break next week

your friendship is over anyway , I would ask to see her wedding photos I would bet anything that she had more than 4 people there , just not you….

Zoec1975 · 31/12/2024 19:09

Sounds like she kept it:( and then lied again and said she left it.don’t feel guilty let her buy a new one.she doesn’t feel guilty to you by the sound of it.

WearyAuldWumman · 30/12/2024 17:08

My first thought was that the friend has kept it for herself.

I feel the same.

Grayson1965 · 31/12/2024 19:12

But has she left it behind 🤔 or has she made it up its a possibility

StartedWithACrisp · 31/12/2024 19:12

She sold it! Or she has decided to keep it for herself! Bet it miraculously turns up if she did keep it. She should buy a new one. She is too dishonest to stay friends with you after this. When people start acting like that, they are definitely users and when they can't use you anymore they don't want to be friends.
