To be suspicious of this receipt

DH is out at a hobby. While he is out I decided to put on a wash. I routinely empty DH trouser pockets before washing as they always have train tickets, receipts etc. In amongst everything was one for a £300 gift card for a large shopping complex. We don’t ever shop in this place as it is a distance away. I didn’t receive this gift card. Neither did his DS or DM as we spent Christmas together. This is a sizeable amount of money for us. I don’t know what to think.

It wasn’t spent “on a mate” it was spent on renovations for OP’s home. The mate provided labor to save OP and her DH time and/or money hiring professionals.

It was still a gift to his friend whatever way it’s said.

TallNeckedGiraffe · 28/12/2024 22:39

The op knows the friend.

Whatisittomorrow · 28/12/2024 22:48

does he own a ltd company?

As the director, you can pay yourself up to £300 a year “trivial benefit” and expense it to the business.

It’s popular to buy a voucher of this amount.

Wow. You're way more trusting than I am! That story wouldn't wash with me at all!

We need to know what was so disappointing in 1998

That memory is well and truly suppressed. It would take months and months of therapy to pick that lock

That says a lot more about you and your relationship than it does about the OP and hers I suspect …

Have you not read her update?!

I hadn't seen the one at 17:02 but I had seen the one at 17:29 so I genuinely missed the one where the OP said it was bought for a friend who had carried out renovations for them but the OP's husband had forgotten to let her know about it.

How can you have a gift card for an entire shopping centre?

Seperate stores within, okay, but just an all round, spend in anything anywhere under this roof? I've not seen one before.

Our local shopping centre has one. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist 🤨🤨

Isinglass20 · 29/12/2024 17:59

I’d wind him up. When he comes home greet him full of excitement and surprise that he has treated you to a £300 gift. No it doesn’t make sense but he’ll have to explain and witness your confusion’ and upset that it’s not what you thought it was and what it actually is , a present for someone else

Teddybear23 · 29/12/2024 18:00

LePetitMaman · 28/12/2024 16:36

I'd already be suspicious about the gift card. But for him to have also paid for it on a card he actively lied about and said he'd lost?

No. Something is very off here.

I personally wouldn’t ask him, I’d say nothing and do a bit of digging and watch his behaviour over the next few weeks. If you ask he’s bound to lie (if he is up to something dodgy). Say nothing and you’ve the opportunity to get more evidence if there is any. Are you sure this hobby is a definite thing, could you go any spy on him the next time to check he’s there and if he is, is he on his own. If I found the same thing in my husband’s pocket I’d definitely be suspicious.

Cdu · 29/12/2024 18:22

Any idea when the bank statement is due in the post? It could provide some answers if there's a bigger picture

She’s asked him. And is happy with the answer.

Aquariusgolddustwoman34 · 29/12/2024 18:32

Might be totally wrong but I work in financial services and there’s a very common scam that’s been going around for some time, especially this time of year, where scammers/fraudsters insist on the victim making or sending payments by pre loaded gift cards as they can’t be or are more
difficult to trace I imagine. It’s usually an Amazon gift card though or an online store similar.

Could it be he’s a victim of a scam or a blackmail attempt? You’d be surprised how many “ordinary” people this happens too contrary to what films/tv dramas would have you believe, its sad actually. Thoughts are with you OP.

I’m sorry to disappoint everyone looking for a sting operation!

DH plays golf. It was on a pretty prestigious course so it is frowned upon to answer calls. Obviously if there was an emergency I would text and say get off the course we need to talk. He was playing with my sibling so yes I’m sure that’s where he was.

I asked about the card. He said he paid with his phone, which would be typical for him, he has lost the card but kept it active on Google pay.

He was horrified that not telling me lead me to believe it was something more and apologised profusely.

Thank you for all the nice messages and for the support

I’m so glad to see it was nothing sinister! I was feeling sick on your behalf - I would have been worried too! x

Minc · 29/12/2024 19:09

Ooops- glad to see it worked out ok. 👍

I answered this post then deleted my question.
What a total waste of time. I don't know why I bother reading this crap

CandiedPrincess · 29/12/2024 19:53

Absolutely not @Tryingtokeepgoing I'm just not that wet behind the ears. Never heard such a tall tale and seen someone so willing to believe it Grin

So your first inclination is to doubt what your bloke tells you? It must be miserable to be in a relationship with so little trust.

CandiedPrincess · 29/12/2024 20:00

To be fair, OP was also suspicious hence the thread she started, and was still very easily appeased.

Would I be suspicious over an out of character spend that may never have been mentioned had she not found the receipt? Of course I would. A gift voucher is also a very odd choice, surely a mate doing work for you would be happier with cash.

StSwithinsDay · 29/12/2024 20:50

She knows the mate who did the work - she can verify it with him if she feels the need.

Lyraloo · 29/12/2024 22:08

It’s so sad that the majority of answers automatically go to “he’s having an affair” 😥

Most do this, tbh. Ie a Westfield Gift Card.

Laurmolonlabe · 29/12/2024 22:56

You have to ask him, emptying his pockets before washing the trousers is legitimate- so just ask him.

You can see all the op's posts by clicking 'see all'.
If you do that you will see that she did ask him. And all is sorted.

Lots of shopping centres do this near me
