To be suspicious of this receipt

DH is out at a hobby. While he is out I decided to put on a wash. I routinely empty DH trouser pockets before washing as they always have train tickets, receipts etc. In amongst everything was one for a £300 gift card for a large shopping complex. We don’t ever shop in this place as it is a distance away. I didn’t receive this gift card. Neither did his DS or DM as we spent Christmas together. This is a sizeable amount of money for us. I don’t know what to think.

Paid from his own account. He told me he lost his card so I’m not even sure how he managed to pay. The receipt says pin verified

I have to enter pin after using Google pay on my phone sometimes, does he have that or apple pay?

ErickBroch · 28/12/2024 19:20

lol I lost my card to our joint account two years ago and I still just use it on Apple Pay!! And to other posters there isn’t a contactless limit of £100 on Apple/Google Pay. So all makes sense.

Mrswhatsit40 · 28/12/2024 19:27

This thread reminds me of the time a colleague (in his 40’s and married) bought 20yo me a £200 gift card for my birthday 😳 It was for the local large shopping centre and I’m ashamed to say I spent it - I was too embarrassed to give it back!

Glad you solved the mystery op.

£300? I thought the contactless limit was £100

For cards, not digital payments.

Ask him?

Don't ask him, it will spook him and make him better at covering tracks. Just say very casually, preferably doing something at the same time (folding t-shirts, putting mascara on, brushing your hair) - this was in the pocket, I did not bin it as I usually would, because I thought it might be important if you kept it for a refund, etc. and leave it at that - his behaviour immediately after these words from you will tell you all.

How can you have a gift card for an entire shopping centre?

Seperate stores within, okay, but just an all round, spend in anything anywhere under this roof? I've not seen one before.

My local shopping centre is meadowhall and you can definitely get gift cards for meadowhall where most of the shops accept it as payment.

Mystery solved. It was a gift card for a friend who recently helped us with some renovation work. He apologised and said he thought he had told me. I am good enough friend with the friend for him not to lie about this. The complex is close to this friend and they’ve just bought a house so all makes sense. Thank goodness

I would still ask the friend anyway.

Diarygirlqueen · 28/12/2024 19:51

So happy to hear it was nothing sinister! Makes me so sad reading some of these threads where it ends up the spouse cheating.

Noooo! The MN resident armchair detectives/man haters will be sorely disappointed. How could you!

Hahaha came to say the same.
The LTB brigade will want more explanations

I live in a town and even our shopping centre has its own gift card

VegTrug · 28/12/2024 20:14

It's so nice to have an innocent resolution to a thread like this 😁

You can, places like Westfield for example.

Istilldontlikeolives · 28/12/2024 20:28

I have to say I would get annoyed if someone was quizzing me or being suspicious about what I spend my money on.

We need to know what was so disappointing in 1998

Gotta be Mr frosty

LookItsMeAgain · 28/12/2024 21:11

Who did he give the gift card to though?

She already knows. Perhaps at least read the OP posts even if you can't be arsed to RTFT

Weefox · 28/12/2024 21:17

Snooping around and checking receipts never ends happily. Ok you're his partner, but do you really expect him to tell you about every purchase he makes. Be careful about this. If he's having an affair or whatever you'll find out soon enough.

StSwithinsDay · 28/12/2024 21:18

@Weefox
It's all fine. Read her updates.

He needs to contact his card and report this fraud!

(He bought it, I know!). His lost card is part of his lame excuse.

PuppyMonkey · 28/12/2024 22:03

£300 though. Wow.

StSwithinsDay · 28/12/2024 22:05

@PuppyMonkey
Maybe the work the friend did would have cost £3k if they paid someone else do it. The OP hasn't said.

TwinkleLights24 · 28/12/2024 22:10

It’s a lot of money to spend on a mate when you were so aghast at him never spending that much.

PuppyMonkey · 28/12/2024 22:15

They didn’t pay for this favour. He paid.

It wasn’t spent “on a mate” it was spent on renovations for OP’s home. The mate provided labor to save OP and her DH time and/or money hiring professionals.
