To be suspicious of this receipt

DH is out at a hobby. While he is out I decided to put on a wash. I routinely empty DH trouser pockets before washing as they always have train tickets, receipts etc. In amongst everything was one for a £300 gift card for a large shopping complex. We don’t ever shop in this place as it is a distance away. I didn’t receive this gift card. Neither did his DS or DM as we spent Christmas together. This is a sizeable amount of money for us. I don’t know what to think.

How can you have a gift card for an entire shopping centre?

Seperate stores within, okay, but just an all round, spend in anything anywhere under this roof? I've not seen one before.

We have them in Ireland.
They can then be used in most stores in the shopping centre.
My children, nieces and nephews love getting those kind of vouchers. Lots of places to choose from.

I'm glad it's resolved, but goodness me that's a hefty amount to spend on a gift for a friend!!

To be fair it sounds like a thank you gift as he saved them paying a professional rate. My neighbour is a plumber and dealt with a bathroom emergency for us just before Xmas and wouldn’t take any payment. It would have easily cost us £500 to get it sorted so we gave him a £50 beer company voucher for Xmas. If it’s renovations, £300 could easily be 10% of the total it could have cost them.

Glad it’s resolved Op and thanks for updating the thread so we need never wonder!

“your renovation guy requested a gift card payment in order to evade tax” was actually going to be my suggestion.

Although there is that 😂

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 28/12/2024 17:25

Gosh! Almost as disappointing as discovering it’s a reverse.

deeahgwitch · 28/12/2024 17:28

Vouchers are not a sit gift @AhBiscuits
I'd far prefer a voucher than a s
it gift 😀

I’m sorry to disappoint everyone looking for a sting operation!

DH plays golf. It was on a pretty prestigious course so it is frowned upon to answer calls. Obviously if there was an emergency I would text and say get off the course we need to talk. He was playing with my sibling so yes I’m sure that’s where he was.

I asked about the card. He said he paid with his phone, which would be typical for him, he has lost the card but kept it active on Google pay.

He was horrified that not telling me lead me to believe it was something more and apologised profusely.

Thank you for all the nice messages and for the support

Mystery solved. It was a gift card for a friend who recently helped us with some renovation work. He apologised and said he thought he had told me. I am good enough friend with the friend for him not to lie about this. The complex is close to this friend and they’ve just bought a house so all makes sense. Thank goodness

All solved within 40 minutes! Glad it was a swift resolution for you, OP.

Pretty common where I live

However its an odd gift really. I prefer vouchers personally and DH buys them for me because he's tired of me exchanging his gifts. But when we were dating, I'd have been a bit miffed to receive a voucher. Unless he knows that someone had seen an item that cost that amount eg coat and the voucher was so they could buy the coat they wanted?

ETA I have just seen your update OP. That is great. Mystery solved.

£300? I thought the contactless limit was £100

Not through Apple/Google pay it isn’t.

Noooo! The MN resident armchair detectives/man haters will be sorely disappointed. How could you!

We even have them for our whole town and the independent shops, cafes and other businesses have all signed up to it (plus some chains), it's a great idea to increase footfall and really woks.

toomuchfaff · 28/12/2024 17:59

How often is he "uncontactable" for the hobby? What's the hobby? Is it real?

just seen the update!

We need to know what was so disappointing in 1998

Glad it’s a happy end op, tbf, he would be a pretty shit affair partner to give a gift voucher to a new lover, no thought in that.

happy New Year.🥳

DowntonCrabbie · 28/12/2024 18:26

If you were suspicious at all though, you have an issue. It's not like you've just tidied this away neatly.

Wonderi · 28/12/2024 18:28

It’s so refreshing to read that you actually communicated with your partner and the issue was resolved.

MN is a great place to get advice and talk it through anonymously but there’s nothing more frustrating than when an OP asks for advice and their only option is to ask the friend/DP etc but they won’t.

I too would have been confused over this and so I’m glad it has a happy ending 😁

Thursdaygirl · 28/12/2024 18:32

Good news that it’s all sorted OP

GravyBoatWars · 28/12/2024 18:43

Glad you didn’t let people here send you to a tailspin, OP.

But wow it’s rather depressing how many people here can’t imagine setting their phone aside or turning it off for a while on a weekend to enjoy a hobby. Maybe everyone should give it a try - mine went on DND for two hours today just so I could browse a used book store and then sat and read/chatted in a coffee shop with one of my siblings today, and it’s always off at the gym. This recent expectation that everyone be constantly available is not a good societal development.
