To be suspicious of this receipt

MagnoliaTree142 · 28/12/2024 16:25

DH is out at a hobby. While he is out I decided to put on a wash. I routinely empty DH trouser pockets before washing as they always have train tickets, receipts etc. In amongst everything was one for a £300 gift card for a large shopping complex. We don’t ever shop in this place as it is a distance away. I didn’t receive this gift card. Neither did his DS or DM as we spent Christmas together. This is a sizeable amount of money for us. I don’t know what to think.

Are you sure he's at hos hobby? This could be innocent and he may have bought the gift card and then used it to buy Xmas presents (sometimes there can be a work discount if you buy that sort of giftcard). Other than the hobby where he is uncontactable is there anything that would make suspicious of an OW?

Why wouldn't you just ask him

Because he isn't contactable at the moment, OP is going to ask when he gets home

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 28/12/2024 16:45

What hobby does he have that you can't contact him the whole time hes out?

It does seem odd that he said he'd lost the card

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 28/12/2024 16:47

@MagnoliaTree142 do you have access to his banking online?? has the 300 emptied his account??

My hobbies are pretty mundane but I always turn my phone off when I’m doing them so I can concentrate on the activity at hand

CluelessAsFuck · 28/12/2024 16:47

What's his DND hobby? Brain surgery?

Dweetfidilove · 28/12/2024 16:49

Hopefully there's a reasonable and honest explanation for this. YANBU at all dor being suspicious of something unusual.

Thetraitor · 28/12/2024 16:49

Sounds dodgy

NewNameNoelle · 28/12/2024 16:50

It does sound suspicious:

  • the lost card was not lost at all
  • no one you know received the gift card
  • its a lots of money for him, not a mindless purchase
  • he hasn't mentioned it to you
  • there isn’t an obvious reason he bought this

Do you have other reasons to make you suspicious, or is this a complete shock?

Wordau · 28/12/2024 16:51

MagnoliaTree142 · 28/12/2024 16:33

It’s definitely not work. All staff received a gift card from management which we talked about and he bought some Christmas supplies with.

It is highly unusual for him to spend such a large amount of money and not mention it.

I wonder if you had any suspicions already

I wouldn't usually bother to look at receipts etc pulled from DH's pockets

Something possibly made you look?

Any other changes recently?

Banging his secretary?

Plus he's uncontactable when at his 'hobby'. I wouldn't let him know you are onto him until you've done a bit of digging and also made sure your finances are in order.

IkeaJesusChrist · 28/12/2024 16:55

I'd be suspicious particularly as he claims to have lost his card.

blubberyboo · 28/12/2024 16:56

All you can do is ask him but I would take a photo first because he’ll take it off you and bin it if he has anything to hide and you might need to refer to date and time later on receipt in case something else comes to light down the line.

looking at the time on the receipt where did you think he was then?

I always check anything that comes out of pockets just in case it’s something important that needs to be kept, to be fair.

JanglingJack · 28/12/2024 16:59

How can you have a gift card for an entire shopping centre?

Seperate stores within, okay, but just an all round, spend in anything anywhere under this roof? I've not seen one before.

scotstars · 28/12/2024 16:59

The only thing I would find off here is him saying he lost the card - possibly covering tracks in case u saw the purchase on statement?

Frazzledmummy123 · 28/12/2024 17:00

Ask him and watch his reaction closely. If he struggled to answer or looks taken aback then I'd say there is cause for suspicion, however if he can answer immediately and gives a believable explanation (e.g. as pp have suggested, bought vouchers to save money, etc).

Do you have a special birthday coming up (or even just a birthday)? Could it be an extravagant gift or planning a surprise?

I'm not going to lie, the hobby where he is uncontactable, and telling you he lost his card which he used for this purchase makes this receipt look potentially dodgy. However, you need to talk to him to gauge his reaction, etc before anyone can really say if there is cause.for suspicion.

Good luck, I hope it does turn out to be nothing.

icelollycraving · 28/12/2024 17:02

Sounds dodgy, given the info about his card being lost. Are you sure he’s at his hobby?
A gift card isn’t really a romantic gift though, if you’re concerned it’s for another woman.

You absolutely can. Our local shopping centre Silverburn in Glasgow does this as does Braehead I'm sure. Buying a general gift card would ensure there's no online debit showing for a jewellery store for instance if you then go buy a gift from it.

This is really common I live in a large city all 3 shopping centres near us do cards for the centre that you can use in most shops in them

MagnoliaTree142 · 28/12/2024 17:02

Mystery solved. It was a gift card for a friend who recently helped us with some renovation work. He apologised and said he thought he had told me. I am good enough friend with the friend for him not to lie about this. The complex is close to this friend and they’ve just bought a house so all makes sense. Thank goodness

They exist in quite a few shopping centers.

Bluewater does them. So does my local shopping centre.
