To not understand how this means a man can get a female passport?

A close friend of DH recently came out as trans. He’s had surgery abroad (FFS I think it’s called) and has set up an Instagram account with videos of the process and many, many, many outfits and make up videos. He has two sons and was married for 14 years before this.

I don’t really have an opinion as such on being trans. I think it’s likely that it’s a genuine feeling that I just can’t understand as I haven’t experienced it and don’t think it’s necessarily just a mental illness.

I don’t understand though that this person has not had his genitals removed or changed (not sure how you would express it) and yet has still got a new passport now saying F. Am I being thick for being unable to get my head around this? He still has a penis so surely that means he is male? How can he have had a passport issued as female?! Do you literally just need to apply and say you’re now presenting as female?

Oh I do smile when people talk of MtF transitioning as a feeling you can't understand unless you are a trans woman.

I am perfectly happy to accept her as female. I have several trans friends. It has been wonderful seeing how much happier they are when able yo be the person they feel more comfortable as.

It is a handy way of making dsb checks a waste of time or hiding a criminal record.

I feel more comfortable as a seven year old, so I assume you're ok with me joining your kids class? I think it would bother me if someone who has physical anatomy of a man, has a passport saying that they’re a female. This would therefore mean that they have equal access to female spaces and I do not feel comfortable knowing that.

I think people should disclose their former “identity” as well as their current one for DBS checks. But how can an employer know for sure?

They are supposed to but how would you check?

The majority of men who are trans ( say they are now women) have intact genitalia.

Well it has been a huge bother for female rape victims in hospital/ prison/ domestic violence shelters/ rape crisis centres. But I guess nobody cares about them. They just have to put up and shut up about having to share toilets, bathrooms, locked rooms and counselling sessions with men.

The whole system relies on the honesty of the applicant. There is no mechanism for previous convictions being disclosed if someone has a GRC and has not supplied details of their original name and sex. It's a very dangerous loophole.

Humans cannot change sex. There is no other intense emotional distress that we attempt to correct with major surgery. The last time we thought that was a good idea we had the horrors of lobotomies.

Personally, I feel that that level of commitment and surety deserves respect. To be born inside the body that you know is wrong must be hell. People aren’t doing it for fun and they do, absolutely, deserve respect.

In Sweden a follow up scientific study with control subjects studied transsexuals ( people who have had surgery and hormone). People born male who became transsexuals were found to retain a male criminal offending pattern.

When it comes to trans identities, there are 2 classifications of males. One group who have no issues with being male nor others perceiving them as male. The second group are males who are not happy (sometimes distressed/distraught) to be regarded as male. The second group can obtain a letter from a doctor stating they have a trans identity, and this can be used to obtain a passport saying they are female.

Natal sex is material and is what determines the survival of the species. It is fundamentally different to identity and self concept. In issuing passports to males stating they are female, the definition of 'male' and 'female' changes from indicating an identity, as opposed to material reality.

When someone says transwomen are women, this means the definition of women includes males. A transwomen can only by a transwomen if they are male/ if they were female, they wouldn't be trans.

The OPs DH's friend in make and will always be male. Some people may use female pronouns and refer to them as if they were female. They may have pieces of paper/ documentation that says they are female, but these reflect social fiction that doesn't reflect material reality.
