Husband went to the gym on Christmas Day?

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 13:51

We did Christmas just the two of us. We don’t have children and our families live in different countries.

We did presents, watched a film, cooked dinner and then he said he was off to the gym. He is very much into the gym, goes pretty much every day.

He couldn’t understand why I was annoyed that he couldn’t just miss one day. Aibu?

OP posts:
SporadicMincePieMuncher · 27/12/2024 18:34

I'm quite envious that his gym was open. I go much less than he does and I really fancied going for a workout in the afternoon to shift all that stodge!

jannier · 27/12/2024 18:37

I would have suggested a walk or something instead.

buttonousmaximous · 27/12/2024 19:17

I'm with you why is one day chilling together such a hard ship? What if you had suggested a walk together?

It sounds like he a bit obsessed with exercise.

Also are you planning to have children? I'd imagine if you do he will still want his own agenda

GravyBoatWars · 27/12/2024 19:25

I'm with you why is one day chilling together such a hard ship?

Why is an hour apart in a day of togetherness such a hardship?

OP’s wants (and yours) are not the default that he needs to justify or negotiate any departure from. It’s perfectly reasonable to want a short stretch of time alone during a day that’s otherwise full of togetherness. Begrudging your partner that just because it’s not your own preference is selfish.

TheHateIsNotGood · 27/12/2024 19:26

Just buy him bits of home gym for every birthday and xmas until he's got enough of a home gym to work out on (or you break up), you out-gym the guy and be better at 'gymming' than he is (and break up).

Insist on a male masseur to warm your muscles up for a xmas treat during his xmas gymming time.

What a nonsensical post? Is it a joke
The person who should be running away is him

Incognitoburrito88 · 27/12/2024 20:03

I didn’t this year but have previously been for a run on Christmas Day or out on my bike. I’d have been pleased to have the house to myself for a bit.

Winterskyfall · 27/12/2024 20:35

Stravaig · 27/12/2024 16:12

This is the third thread I've seen today where it is the OP's partner who needs the 'red flag, run!' advice from MNetters.

Agreed!

Winterskyfall · 27/12/2024 20:37

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 17:52

How did I make him feel bad about it?

"He couldn’t understand why I was annoyed that he couldn’t just miss one day."

Your exact words.

CulturalNomad · 27/12/2024 20:45

He should have at least said, I fancy popping to the gym, is it ok if I go?

But why should an adult have to ask permission to do something completely mundane like exercise? Would he need to ask permission to read a book for an hour or take a nap?

If you switched things around and the OP started a thread saying that her husband resented her going to the gym after spending the whole day alone together I can guarantee words like "controlling" and "red flag" would be used to describe his behaviour.

daisychain01 · 27/12/2024 20:52

Has he come back from the gym yet?

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 27/12/2024 20:55

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 17:52

Based on what?

Based on the way you are coming across here.

I can’t help but wonder if you are so annoyed at his gym-time (which really doesn’t seem like a big deal it’s not like you’re hosting anyone even) whether he even has the chance to have an opinion on anything else that happens - do you over react if he wants to do something different to you generally?

Unless there’s a massive drip feed coming this was totally unnecessary.

Cheesyfootballs01 · 27/12/2024 21:24

OP you haven’t said what you said to him? Because if he said ‘ oh I’m going to the gym now’ and you actually wanted him to stay home and spend the whole day with him surely you said that you wanted him to stay with you all day?

Or did you say nothing and expect him to read your mind…

And you obviously did express annoyance because you said he couldn’t understand why you were annoyed at him..?

Everlygreen · 27/12/2024 21:30

But what did you want him to sit around doing? He did all the Christmas stuff. Other people who have busy and full Xmas days because they are visiting family, have kids to see and a house to prepare for hosting. You didn't do any of it , so I guess he probably thought that it was ok to go to gym once the main stuff was done. I mean how many movies can you sit and watch anyway.

KhakiOrca · 27/12/2024 21:31

Yeah cos everyone goes to the gym on Christmas Day. If the OP isn’t having us on then she’s being had on.

theotherplace · 27/12/2024 21:32

The gym isn't open on Xmas day. You can Google this.

SabreIsMyFave · 27/12/2024 21:33

What gym opens on Christmas day?

Anyone who is claiming their gym opens on Christmas day, what gym is it? I have googled for about 5-6 minutes and looked at 18-20 different gyms, and so far I can't find a single gym that opens on Christmas day!

As a pp said, I bet he didn't go there really.

VegTrug · 27/12/2024 21:42

LTB. If he's that obsessed that he can’t stay away for one day per year then he's got issues he needs to address. He's unhealthily obsessed

"The" gym 😂You say that as if there's only one brand of gyms and they all have the same schedule.

She did google his gym. It was open. Some were.

The gym? There's thousands of different gyms in the uk

Not to mention the millions outside the UK given we don’t know where OP is. Christmas isn’t even a public holiday in many places.

I don’t understand people’s purpose arguing about that - OP has said she confirmed it was open.

I'm not outing myself, but there are 5 or 6 gyms in the town I live in. Mine was shut but there's one that's part of a chain that is usually open 24 hours a day (unstaffed at night) that I've just checked. Sure enough it was open just unstaffed Christmas day and boxing day.

SpanThatWorld · 27/12/2024 21:55

I have previously done ParkRun on Xmas Day.

Last year and this I went swimming in Kenwood Ladies Pond

A break from each other can be quite nice. Tbf, my husband is usually in bed when I go out to exercise.

🤣 Pure Gym, Anytime Fitness, Village Gym, there are a good few open on Christmas day.

Right, because there's one gym.

As mentioned, several types of gym are open on Christmas day:

  1. Unstaffed 24/7 gyms that members can enter any time. My local Anytime Fitness never 'closes'.
  2. Gyms that form part of hotels. You might have noticed that hotels and hospitality work over Christmas.
  3. Workplace gyms for employers who operate 24/7.

I could probably have scared up a good dozen open gyms in a ten mile radius here.
