To be fuming at adult DD?

ThisisnotwhatIhadplanned · 24/12/2024 22:11

My adult (21 y/o) DD is staying for two weeks. She has been taking the Mick since she arrived, but I think this might be the straw that broke the camel's back.

I bought 20 meters of wrapping paper for dd2 (7 y/o)'s presents. I have wrapped a few, but have the majority to do tonight. I have just gone to get the wrapping paper and it isn't there. DD1 has used the lot today, and also failed to mention it while I was at three different supermarkets getting the stuff the other ones had run out of. She has not mentioned it at all. I have just asked her if she has seen it and she said "oh yeah, I thought it was just spare. I was going to replace it but" and then just walked off. I have about 15 presents to wrap and even the Tesco express and Sainsbury's local are closed. I have printer paper, baking paper and kitchen foil. I am fuming. AIBU? How the hell do I wrap the presents now??? The bit that has really pissed me off is that the presents she has wrapped are for people she isn't even going to see for at least another week, so she could have bought some between now and New Year.

That is bloody cheeky. Any friends or neighbours would have any to spare? Send her off on a hunt.

Suzuki76 · 24/12/2024 22:13

That's awful. Get in there and ask her how she proposes to resolve this. Can she drive?

Eyesopenwideawake · 24/12/2024 22:13

Get the presents she used your paper on, carefully unwrap them and use that paper. If you can't send her out to the local 24hr shop.

Tabbyandwhite · 24/12/2024 22:14

Sounds like something my children would do - not thinking ahead or thinking of others - not a grown, adult independent woman of 21.

So no, YANBU.

HomeworkMonitor · 24/12/2024 22:14

Send her to neighbours :-). she'll love that

Piggypiggyoinkoink · 24/12/2024 22:14

Unwrap what she’s wrapped and use it for your gifts. Offer her the printer paper etc. ideally 15 minutes before she is supposed to leave to meet the gift receivers.

This is what I would do

Not2identifying · 24/12/2024 22:15

I second asking a neighbour. I always buy too much and would be able to help you out if you were next door to me. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

MrsWhites · 24/12/2024 22:15

Unwrap her presents if you can and try to reuse whatever you can.

Pop to any neighbours you have with kids, if they are anything like me they are bound to have loads left over.

damekindness · 24/12/2024 22:16

Drop a message in WhatsApp or other social media's and ask if anyone very nearby has spare wrapping paper. I've got loads left!

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 24/12/2024 22:16

That’s annoying. If she can drive send her to a shop to get some more. There must be somewhere in a 10 mile radius open.

if she can’t then you’ll have to carefully unwrap the presents which are for people she won’t see for a week and use that.

adult kids can be pretty unthinking and irritating when they’ve lived away for a bit. I love dd1 (almost 20) being home from uni but I’ve had moments when I can’t wait for her to go back 😂

adamduritzvocalchords · 24/12/2024 22:16

If you were near me I would give you mine but that doesn't help with the selfishness of your eldest

Choconuttolata · 24/12/2024 22:16

Pillowcases is your solution, possibly linen napkins and string if small enough. Single sheets if larger. Explain to DD2 that you are trying to reduce waste from wrapping paper.

Make DD1 chief washer upper as penance for her selfish behaviour.

Coffeemmmmcoffee · 24/12/2024 22:16

Wow she is rude. And selfish. Not a good look.

Id be unwrapping hers and trying to use the paper and sending her out to get you more.

If she can’t drive make her take an uber to the nearest late night supermarket.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 24/12/2024 22:18

Unwrap her presents carefully and use the paper if you can.

MrsR87 · 24/12/2024 22:18

I would definitely contact a local friend or pop a message on a local group as I am sure lots of people will have leftover. I’ve got almost two rolls left that I would happily give to someone in need.

Totally agree. She is unbelievably selfish and should know better at her age. She should be ashamed but sounds like she doesn't give a shit

Eeeeeeeeeekohno · 24/12/2024 22:22

I haven't bought wrapping paper in about 15 years as we use newspaper in my house. Have you still got a Sunday paper kicking around that you could use?

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/12/2024 22:23

Wrap in baking paper or foil. Take printer paper and cut it into "snowflakes" (cut a rough circle, fold it in half across the middle then fold both ends in so it's folded into 6 segments stacked on top of each other, cut shapes into each side and into the curved top, unfold to reveal 6 sided symmetrical lacy shape) and stick on for decoration.

Or dig into your sewing store for ribbons.

Let it be known that you will kill anyone who tears the foil off, then you can gather ot up and put back in the kitchen for use later.

Missionimprobable · 24/12/2024 22:24

Doubt there's any 24hr shops open how, are you or Dd on Facebook?
You could put a shout out asking if anyone has got any to spare.

Pietey · 24/12/2024 22:25

Ask on your local community Facebook, there’s several posts in my local one asking if anyone has various stuff including wrapping paper

You wrap presents in newspaper?? Plus...who still buys newspapers?? Not many people - and I doubt that the ones who do use them to wrap presents in. I totally understand 'reuse, recycle' etc but wrapping presents in newspaper is a step too far 🥴 I'd rather receive it unwrapped 🤦‍♀️

PlanningTowns · 24/12/2024 22:26

Pop it on your local Facebook community board, there are a few requests on ours and so many people willing to help.

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 24/12/2024 22:27

Put it on twitter/your WhatsApp groups whatever you use someone nearby will have some.

Slightly of topic but I could never leave it until Christmas Eve to wrap - my back couldn’t take doing it all in one go.
