To be fuming at adult DD?

ThisisnotwhatIhadplanned · 24/12/2024 22:11

My adult (21 y/o) DD is staying for two weeks. She has been taking the Mick since she arrived, but I think this might be the straw that broke the camel's back.

I bought 20 meters of wrapping paper for dd2 (7 y/o)'s presents. I have wrapped a few, but have the majority to do tonight. I have just gone to get the wrapping paper and it isn't there. DD1 has used the lot today, and also failed to mention it while I was at three different supermarkets getting the stuff the other ones had run out of. She has not mentioned it at all. I have just asked her if she has seen it and she said "oh yeah, I thought it was just spare. I was going to replace it but" and then just walked off. I have about 15 presents to wrap and even the Tesco express and Sainsbury's local are closed. I have printer paper, baking paper and kitchen foil. I am fuming. AIBU? How the hell do I wrap the presents now??? The bit that has really pissed me off is that the presents she has wrapped are for people she isn't even going to see for at least another week, so she could have bought some between now and New Year.

I'm still going to be wrapping in the morning before family arrive. And I'm retired and with no excuse. But also with no risk of someone helping themselves to my wrapping paper.

Get some potatoes and cut some shapes out of them (stars, tree etc). Raid 7 year old's craft box for paint and print some patterns on the baking paper using the potato shapes. Use for wrapping paper.

*even better with a bit of glitter and ribbon.

And who the hell has got time to do that?!

Yes your DD is a CF and I would tear a strip off her.

And use it to wrap the presents?

Gillemeow · 25/12/2024 03:20

We haven't used wrapping paper for years now, it's such a waste of money and is bad for the environment.

I use a mixture of scarves, pillowcases, Santa sacks, tea towels, clothes given as gifts (obv can use existing clothes too). It's so much easier to wrap gifts, there's no sellotape to mess about with and zero waste.

Hubby can't even be bothered with that so my gifts are wrapped in their delivery envelopes/boxes.

Other options are using the brown paper Amazon use to pad out items posted in boxes, cereal boxes etc.

MangoRose · 25/12/2024 03:59

Ours were considerate about wrapping, asked first but also bought loads but I'm fuming at 18 yo DS, was meant to be out just for family meal he ended up going out after for a couple of drinks, came home after 230, was really noisy, ordered food which arrived at 330 and they knocked the door, then started loudly throwing up about 10 mins ago

I have the start of a migraine as it is but thought I had managed to sort with meds but now I've had no sleep it's definitely coming on.

So pissed off, I asked him to be considerate tonight (he usually is anyway) but especially as I'm hosting etc

Bunny44 · 25/12/2024 04:08

Hmm I'm just thinking about my house and feel like it's the sort of thing my sister would do, not maliciously but she just acts like a child when she comes home, and she's 30! Turns up to Christmas brings nothing, assumes she can use whatever she finds in the house. I think it's worth making a point of the inconvenience and tell her your predicament and ask her what you should do.

When my sister does something that annoys one of us without thinking she is a bit embarrassed and apologetic afterwards so maybe see what reaction you get from just pointing this out, I.e. that you can't wrap DD7 presents and shops are closed.

Soonenough · 25/12/2024 04:17

My DD did this the other day. Doesn't even live here FT. To be fair I usually have loads from year to year. BUT she used my new batch plus the nice gift tags I got. And all the red bows and red ribbon. And my one gift bag I was saving.

It' s a little bit of the same here.
We also throw in some old magazine, newspapers and Reise wrapping paper.
Maybe I just live in very enviromentally conscious bubble.
I would make your DD1 pick whatever's in the house and go wild on decorating.

Just ask a neighbour and call her a selfish arsehole then move on.

How is using those things cheaper than wrapping paper?

Because you don't have to buy extra?
Also no warte.

I haven't bought wrapping paper in about 15 years as we use newspaper in my house. Have you still got a Sunday paper kicking around that you could use?

I haven't bought a newspaper in about 15 years.....

This is what we do too. I usually have enough saved over the year e.g. tissue paper that flowers are wrapped in.
A great tip from a friend is to use old maps. They look really pretty tied with ribbon or raffia.

AlicePottery · 25/12/2024 07:36

I've used pillowcases in the past, looks good with a bit of ribbon, good for the environment which is a bonus.

Doesn't it all look a bit random? Or are you creative enough to make it look nice?
I can't imagine the kids coming down to a pile of tea towels, t shirts and scarves!

UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType · 25/12/2024 07:39

Any neighbours/friends who might have some?

Everyone's gifts are inside their own Santa sack, which I bought in the sales years ago. I also have a bunch of spares and some that aren't mega christmassy that we use for birthdays. This year the new car has its own sack.

The sacks make it harder to guess what the presents are before opening. Hubby is frustratingly good at this.

As long as it looks good round the tree on Christmas morning I'm not bothered about the presents inside coordinating. The wrap lasts for about 5 seconds before being discarded after all.

I am rubbish at wrapping with paper and tape and it used to take hours to do. Then there was the picking up all the bits of paper from the floor after people have unwrapped and removing the sellotape so you can recycle the paper.

Now everything just goes away in the sacks, or back with the bedding or whatever. Much easier.

Because I already have them or are giving them as gifts anyway. The year I got my teen a new rucksack, pretty much every pocket had a different gift in.

MrsToothyBitch · 25/12/2024 07:55

Another one who would've forcibly unwrapped Dd1s stash.

Any small items you could get away with wrapping in kitchen roll & putting some ribbon round? I always wrap with tissue paper unless the items are really big as I find it much nicer to work with, so kitchen roll would be my first thought.

theallotmentqueen · 25/12/2024 07:59

If you’re really in a pinch, newspaper can work!

Gitfeatures · 25/12/2024 12:38

One year, all our presents were wrapped in the same wallaper that was in the kitchen.

We were clearly thick as shit, as we never questioned it.

Isittimeformynapyet · 25/12/2024 13:02

"Explain to DD2 that you are trying to reduce waste from wrapping paper."

Ah yes, the old MN "here's an opportunity to lie"

Life must be a sitcom for you people!

Greatbritish · 24/12/2024 23:17

If this is the straw that broke the camels back, what else has the CF been up to for the last fortnight?

Eating food from the fridge? Sitting on the sofa? Not wiping the shower down?

20m of wrapping paper sitting about late on Christmas Eve is fair game, particularly if no one has said "don't touch this" Why on earth would she mention she'd used it? Any sensible household buys Christmas wrappings in bulk and they get used up as needed. And they certainly don't leave important present wrapping until post 9pm on Christmas Eve.

The poor girl used wrapping paper to wrap things up and didn't know it was needed elsewhere.

And here's another tip for you OP...buy lots of paper boxing day onwards. I've always got at least 5 rolls in my loft that get topped up 26th onwards. I can't remember ever running out of paper.

Sounds like DD has done well learning organisation and planning skills, despite your lack of them.

Completely agree with this

gardenflowergirl · 26/12/2024 18:29

I hope you unwrapped some of her gifts in order to wrap your youngest 's presents.

Yoonimum · 26/12/2024 20:46

I know technically your DD is an adult but I would not expect any of our DC to remember to buy wrapping paper until they were at least 25 or older! Young adults can be very trying over practicalities even when they are basically nice and unselfish people. We had started to hand out Christmas presents when our 21 yo remembered he had not wrapped his and put them out! And, yes, he had no paper of his own! I can't get exercised about this though as he helped a lot with Christmas prep, walked the dog and made one of the desserts.
