To be fuming at adult DD?

ThisisnotwhatIhadplanned · 24/12/2024 22:11

My adult (21 y/o) DD is staying for two weeks. She has been taking the Mick since she arrived, but I think this might be the straw that broke the camel's back.

I bought 20 meters of wrapping paper for dd2 (7 y/o)'s presents. I have wrapped a few, but have the majority to do tonight. I have just gone to get the wrapping paper and it isn't there. DD1 has used the lot today, and also failed to mention it while I was at three different supermarkets getting the stuff the other ones had run out of. She has not mentioned it at all. I have just asked her if she has seen it and she said "oh yeah, I thought it was just spare. I was going to replace it but" and then just walked off. I have about 15 presents to wrap and even the Tesco express and Sainsbury's local are closed. I have printer paper, baking paper and kitchen foil. I am fuming. AIBU? How the hell do I wrap the presents now??? The bit that has really pissed me off is that the presents she has wrapped are for people she isn't even going to see for at least another week, so she could have bought some between now and New Year.

Your DD used 20 meters? How many large presents did she wrap?

Eshould have checked for sure. You don’t exactly seem pleased to have her home. I doubt she hasn’t not spotted this. She was 14 when you had a baby? Teenager and a baby. Must have been tough all round

ask on neighbours what’s app chat

WyrdyGrob · 24/12/2024 23:02

This might be a MN to,the rescue.. ive got shitloads, left over from when the kids were little. bet I’m not the only one.

We have a running joke of overly reusing reusable bags now, so I was just thinking what I should do with it all.

You wrap presents in newspaper?? Plus...who still buys newspapers?? Not many people - and I doubt that the ones who do use them to wrap presents in. I totally understand 'reuse, recycle' etc but wrapping presents in newspaper is a step too far 🥴 I'd rather receive it unwrapped 🤦‍♀️

How many trees are cut down for single use wrapping paper . . .?

DooDooDooDooDooDooDooDoo · 24/12/2024 23:07

I wanted to buy a Sunday paper a few weeks ago and they were £4. Xmas Shock

Wrap in baking paper or foil. Take printer paper and cut it into "snowflakes" (cut a rough circle, fold it in half across the middle then fold both ends in so it's folded into 6 segments stacked on top of each other, cut shapes into each side and into the curved top, unfold to reveal 6 sided symmetrical lacy shape) and stick on for decoration.

Or dig into your sewing store for ribbons.

Let it be known that you will kill anyone who tears the foil off, then you can gather ot up and put back in the kitchen for use later.

That is such a great idea! I think I will use it for my next year gift wrapping 😊

Blanketssese · 24/12/2024 23:11

Yes your DD is a CF and I would tear a strip off her.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense maybe. But consider what the OP has written. Teens and early twenties people can often be self absorbed. Common sense in making them aware needs to prevail here.

Furthermore I would counter your viewpoint and say that anybody with an ounce of common sense who still has presents to wrap on Christmas eve needs to tell other house members not to use their wrapping paper.

I’m sorry but this is utter rubbish

Greatbritish · 24/12/2024 23:17

If this is the straw that broke the camels back, what else has the CF been up to for the last fortnight?

Eating food from the fridge? Sitting on the sofa? Not wiping the shower down?

20m of wrapping paper sitting about late on Christmas Eve is fair game, particularly if no one has said "don't touch this" Why on earth would she mention she'd used it? Any sensible household buys Christmas wrappings in bulk and they get used up as needed. And they certainly don't leave important present wrapping until post 9pm on Christmas Eve.

The poor girl used wrapping paper to wrap things up and didn't know it was needed elsewhere.

And here's another tip for you OP...buy lots of paper boxing day onwards. I've always got at least 5 rolls in my loft that get topped up 26th onwards. I can't remember ever running out of paper.

Sounds like DD has done well learning organisation and planning skills, despite your lack of them.

ItsDdayalloveragain · 24/12/2024 23:21

have you any wallpaper rolls left over? Or serviettes?

devilspawn · 24/12/2024 23:22

Foil is actually way better than wrapping paper for presents, it's much more malleable. One of my male friends does it every year.

If someone printed Christmas patterns on foil they'd make a fortune.

KittyPup · 24/12/2024 23:23

Post your town. Someone on here may happen to be relatively close to you. I have a shed load left over for example.

Clarabell77 · 24/12/2024 23:23

Do you not have any friends or relatives nearby that might have some spare?

TheCatterall · 24/12/2024 23:24

Another vote for unwrapping hers and patching together to use yourself.

Unwrap her presents and use it?? Annoying and thoughtless. Not malicious

Disturbtheuniverse · 24/12/2024 23:26

Get some potatoes and cut some shapes out of them (stars, tree etc). Raid 7 year old's craft box for paint and print some patterns on the baking paper using the potato shapes. Use for wrapping paper.

*even better with a bit of glitter and ribbon.

TwinklyAmberOrca · 24/12/2024 23:26

Obviously you just unwrap hers and reuse the paper

EasterIssland · 24/12/2024 23:27

did She know you hadn’t finished wrapping?

Why cause a big fuss and upset a young girl when it should be fairly easy to get some paper from someone else. Also, no matter how careful you are, this is not going to be a good look.

tothelefttotheleft · 24/12/2024 23:33

@Greatbritish

What a vile reply.

Peopleinmyphone · 24/12/2024 23:35

In this situation I'd go to my local petrol station garage (or send dd if she can drive), hope you've figured out a solution.

JudgeJ · 24/12/2024 23:36

Missionimprobable · 24/12/2024 22:24

Doubt there's any 24hr shops open how, are you or Dd on Facebook?
You could put a shout out asking if anyone has got any to spare.

Garage shops are still open, a couple even open tomorrow.

Thatcastlethere · 24/12/2024 23:40

Unwrap the presents sue has wrapped and use that paper.. it's also worth checking with neighbours to see if they have any spare. I'm doing my wrapping right now and have massively Iver bought wrapping paper so if I were your neighbour I'd happily give some!

Endofyear · 24/12/2024 23:40

Can you cut up an old sheet use that to wrap and tie up presents with ribbon or tinsel?

Codlingmoths · 24/12/2024 23:41

I also think you carefully unwrap and use the paper.

TheCatterall · 24/12/2024 23:41

@Clarabell77 at gone 10pm at night I wouldn’t be asking neighbours or Facebook for spare rolls of paper. I’d just use what’s in the house…
