Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?

And AIBU to say it shouldn’t be allowed?

I would love to hear from someone who thinks it looks good on them and why?

Is it an addictive thing? Once you start you keep going bigger and bigger?

I have NO ISSUE with nips and tucks and women doing whatever makes them feel good but I do not understand lip filler it’s the one thing looks universally awful.

I think it’s different for celebrities. I understand how their ‘look’ can influence non celebrities though. I saw a thread somewhere about Nicole Kidman. There were people berating her for how much work she has had done and how thin she is. The truth is though, not many 50 plus women seam to get as much work as she does. She is still getting work and I am of the opinion that if the had aged naturally and had the wrinkles of a 50 plus year old woman and was a bit fatter, then she would not be chosen for the roles she has. Btw these roles do not specifically require a woman to have had Botox, facelifts, nose job, look extremely thin etc. Think about how many women of her age get as many roles as she does. Not many is the answer. Unless they are playing a comedy role then you get the stereotypically ‘fat’ woman.
Older men do get chosen without having to look like this. They are fatter, balder, greyer, with wrinkles galore.
Demi Moore is another one. How much work has she had done? Yes she looks good but good lord so much plastic going on there, along with extreme dieting/diet pills.
Ive just been to the shop and one of the assistants has huge fake lips. Completely fake looking and they look quite sore but I’m just projecting. She wasn’t young either which somehow makes it look even weirder.

I think people having this done (if they want to, more power to them obviously but hear me out) really should consider not just how it looks to them, looking front-on at themselves in a mirror, but how it looks to other people looking at them sideways on (or from behind in some cases). Yes, obviously they only have to please themselves with how they look, but if you want to look completely natural then check on your view from other angles.

I'm all for people changing their appearance to look however they want to. Their faces, their choice, but don't kid yourself that nobody can tell when you've only seen yourself head-on.

Im an aesthetics (medically trained) practitioner and these threads always make me laugh

Good work isn't noticeable. Bad work is.
Sadly there are many terrible aesthetics clinics. Regulation should be kicking in soon and that will help.

But seriously some of the nonsense on this thread...
Done well it is good. Too much or poor anatomical knowledge will result in the duck look. I never overfill any client. At the end of the day they're a walking advertisement for me and I don't want to be associated with poor work.

That said, there is a definite step away from fillers at the moment. The more natural look is definitely coming back and I spend just as much time dissolving (others work) lips as I do filling them.

PP who mentioned vertical lip lines. Generally avoid filler there... have a look at polynucleotides.

The op didn’t post about small tweaks though did she? She said why do people have MASSIVE amounts of lip filler. We are talking about people whose lips look huge and unnatural. I see it all the time. There isn’t anything natural about it. Iften the lips look like they are about to burst and squirt puss everywhere. It seams to be a desired look to look very fake. That is what the op was saying. Why do women want to look so unnatural?
It must be a definite trend.
The same as wearing very high heels, or shaving your head for example.

CharlotteCChapel · 07/01/2025 18:11

It's called filler blindness. You get lip filler, it migrates do you get more but as your lips still have some filler left they get bigger. Eventually you get jowls caused by filler so you get it removed but your face looks baggy without filler so you get more.....

Maybe they like the way it looks? If you don't you don't have to have it, do you?

They're not the ones looking at it though!

This.. I think so many of them are only concerned with how they look on an Instagram photo on a night out, on that rare occasion with filters it might look good, but in the cold light of day it looks so swollen and strange.

BBC has an article about this today: Botched fillers left Hull woman 'looking like a gargoyle' - BBC News

Not only do often they look awful when done properly, they can lead to real disfigurement too. Leslie Ash is another case in point.

Andrea after her treatments. Her cheeks and lips are puffy and her eyes are barely open. She has shoulder-length blonde hair and is sitting in a blue medical chair

Cosmetics clinic says it has "totally reviewed all procedures" since treating Andrea.

Gowlett · 10/01/2025 17:32

I’ll be totally honest & say that I just don’t understand why anyone gets any of this stuff done… I wouldn’t let anyone touch my face or body, even if was free. But I appreciate that’s just how I feel. Plenty of people want cosmetic procedures.

Gowlett · 10/01/2025 17:35

Also, seeing as pictures can be filtered etc on Insta / SM, then why bother having the procedures? Always looks strange IRL.

Gggglinda · 10/01/2025 17:40

I think they get used to how they look once they have it once, and think theres no difference, and then go again and the cycle continues. You get used to how you look very quickly and don't realise how unnatural they are. I have seen them done very subtly and it looks nice, you wouldn't know unless they told you they've had the tiniest ammount but most of them I see are migrated / very obvious. I've had someone tell me they've had filler but it's natural as they are "flat and Russian style" and they were very obvious and ducky looking/ protruding from the side profile.

BurntBroccoli · 10/01/2025 19:13

Maybe it's partly a 'conspicuous consumption' thing? A display of your wealth?

I don't think it looks good as the proportions of the other features of the face rarely match. The side profile looks very odd when the lips have been overdone.
