Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?

CobaltRewind · 24/12/2024 17:58

And AIBU to say it shouldn’t be allowed?

I would love to hear from someone who thinks it looks good on them and why?

Is it an addictive thing? Once you start you keep going bigger and bigger?

I have NO ISSUE with nips and tucks and women doing whatever makes them feel good but I do not understand lip filler it’s the one thing looks universally awful.

Oh come on. This looks better after the lips have been done.

I think the nose job made the difference.

Not the lips. Newly divorced woman friend turned up for brunch recently. Always looked lovely, lots of money (her choice to divorce), looks like fucking duck!

I think what a lot of people don't realise is you've never seen 'nice looking filled lips' because you wouldn't know you've had them done. I once sat and listened to a colleague saying she can always tell, they look awful, all the stuff being said on here, when I told her I'd had mine done two weeks before (I don't work in the same office as this woman had only met in person once before) she looked shocked, told me I hadn't, took some persuading then said 'oh yes now you say I can totally tell you've had them done... hmmm
To the prev poster who asked why nobody has taken me aside to tell me I look awful, presumably because they don't think I do, or aren't spectacularly rude?

I don't feel they look natural but would never tell someone that. Everyone can do what they want to their own body. Some of the Russian style lashes make peoples eyes look smaller imo but again I wouldn't share that. If you feel yours are natural and like them, great it's your lips and up to you. From a side profile even more subtle ones protrude since the way they inject. Ultimately, what does it matter?

Lollollol2020 · 28/12/2024 10:00

Near where I work there are a lot of wealthy residents and the shops are filled with puffy faced puppets with rubber lips of all ages. I think as long as they think they look good when the camera phone is turned on them that’s ok. They don’t seem to care about the other angles. Filler doesn’t ever completely dissolve and it migrates around the face. Dread to think where it will end up.

This. The reason people think “they never look good!” is because the one’s that do look good they would never be able to tell.

PlumpHobbit · 28/12/2024 18:17

I think they look awful, especially when they can't move their lips properly when talking because they're so stuffed full of crap

Doesn't help all the "influencers" (a word i hate) and love island types have it, so that age range are left thinking in order to be seen as attractive you need these awful over inflated lips.

Someone at work is so young but already getting botox and fillers and extolling their virtues to others in the office, who are now also looking into it!

Molly Mae looks so much more naturally pretty after she got rid of the lip fillers, so many of these girls don't need them, and it almost turns them into caricatures

I wonder if in ten/twenty years time any health issues will come out of this wasn't there similar with some of the silicone that was used for breastfeeding implants?

I'm another who doesn't get the trend for the stupid pouting in photos, like why? Just smile it looks so much nicer!

Yes I have a recently divorced 50-something friend who recently turned up to a coffee date with massive lip fillers. No-one mentioned them but as soon as she left and I closed the door behind her, I went back into the sitting room to my other two friends, and all at once we all said Oh my God, WTF has she done to her lips?! They look dreadful!

The filler went all the way to the corners of her mouth, top and bottom. So instead of just replacing lost volume and giving her mouth a nice shape, she looked like she'd had two of those long sausage shaped draft excluders that you stitched into lips. It looked ridiculous.

ElderLemon · 28/12/2024 22:47

Catza · 24/12/2024 20:01

I am expecting a pile on but let me just tell you that my own mother didn't notice I have a lip filler and she is the person who practically disowned my aunt for wearing fake eyelashes at an event.
It can be done tastefully just to replace what is naturally lost with age. However, before I committed to my very first treatment I did a lot of investigation and there is such thing as loss of perspective when you see yourself in the mirror every day having had them done. Lips swell up after treatment and you sort-of get used to it. Then the swelling goes down and, comparatively, the lips look as if nothing was done to them. That's where people will often go to have a top up and so the obsessive cycle begins.
So what I did and still do, I measured across the middle of my upper and lower lip before the treatment and 10 days after the first treatment. I now have an objective measure. If I catch myself thinking "oh, it's time for a top up", I get my ruler out. I've had 0.5-1 ml put in approximately once every 2-3 years using this system and it worked brilliantly for me. No duck lips in sight.

But if your mother couldn't even tell, what was the benefit really? You obviously looked fine before.

It could be said for anything. What’s the point of buying a new house? New underwear that nobody can see? Cutting your hair? Painting your nails? Shaving your legs? Having a slice of cake? Going to see a movie when you can just watch something at home? We live in a world where choices are available to us and sometimes we do things because “I wanna!!”. I am sure you are not entirely virtuous if you think deeper about the choices you make every day.

OogieBoogieWoogie · 29/12/2024 09:00

I think the lips look best when accompanied by 1inch fake lashes.

eklaljdj · 29/12/2024 09:14

@Catza that's a strange list, new house provides a roof over our reads and other benefits, shaving legs, painting nails etc is mostly due to other people seeing, new underwear feels good. What's the benefit to lip fillers if they were so subtle someone's own mother doesn't notice?

I notice. That's the point

ThinWomansBrain · 29/12/2024 13:02

to balance out the ton of false eyelashes and mascara?

CeceliaImrie · 04/01/2025 12:02

Unfortunately my top lip is a bit ducky naturally (as is my sons and nephews do that matter)

I guess some people will look at me and laugh thinking I've had something done but I haven't and that's a bit upsetting tbh.

I've been told I've had my eyebrows done before by a man in a pub which I thought was funny at the time. Looking back I'm hurt that people at judging other people's faces, some of us just have natural features that aren't aesthetically perfect but that's ok with me and it should be to everyone else.

How about we stop criticising.

CeceliaImrie · 04/01/2025 12:04

For* that matter, ffs!

And filthy. The germs lurking in those things. Absolutely disgusting.

I also wonder how they wipe, that can't be a pleasant experience.

BoldAmberDuck · 05/01/2025 18:40

They look like inflatable sex dolls

WalterdelaMare · 05/01/2025 18:51

My friend has had a lip flip recently. It actually looks ok to me, and quite natural. But we did laugh before Christmas when we went out for cocktails and she realised she can’t currently sip through a straw. She was having to hold her top lip down!

BoldAmberDuck · 05/01/2025 18:40

I think that is the point. However much those who partake in the very noticeably fake look try to argue that it is purely for them, their body their choice etc ultimately it is because men who like porn want girlfriends who have the porn look.
And some women accommodate that in order to get male attention.

CeceliaImrie · 06/01/2025 21:26

To answer your original question, I wonder if nowadays it's just an extension of expressions of taste and personal style. It’d be boring if we all adopted the same things across the cultural spectrum. We all like different music, film, home decor, fashion, make up and hair styles. The ideal beauty aesthetic theme is part of it.

Some request a natural looking amount of whatever product it is, Botox, filler and some actively choose the fake, extreme levels of it. Different strokes for different folks. I don’t like it, I think the Karsahians have a lot to answer for. I see the impact they’ve had on young women this past decade. Add into the mix Instagram influencer fakery and the algorithm of products and procedures and you’ve got yourself a phenomenon.

This is what I see on my ‘feed’ (?) whenever I open Instagram. I only go on it to look at cats. It must be an algorithm that assumes 30 something year old cat ladies are desperate to be pretty.

Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?
Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?

CeceliaImrie · 06/01/2025 22:28

I'm sure you do look at cats but something somewhere is picking up your attention in this arena. I can't say I've ever seen images like that on my feed. You say 'ladies are desperate to be pretty' but I don't think we're agreeing it is pretty. It is to some people and its ugly to others.

Jaehee · 06/01/2025 23:35

I didn't say that, I said I think the algorithm is assuming cat ladies of a certain age must be desperate to look pretty. I was being tongue-in-cheek.

Aibuquestiononrelationship · 07/01/2025 11:28

On the topic of being 'pretty'..... I think natural faces are lovely. Imo a face with pumped lips or filler isn't pretty. To the people who want that look I imagine they think its great. Just different opinions really.

Disturbia81 · 07/01/2025 11:56

After years I'd wondering why they do it, same with celebs and their bizarre plastic surgery, I've always thought "why??? All that money and you look like someone who has been embalmed or wearing a joke mask"

I've come to realise they think differently about it, they like the swollen lips look, they like the orange skin, the pillow filler look, they genuinely seem to prefer it. It's sad but fair enough
