Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?

CobaltRewind · 24/12/2024 17:58

And AIBU to say it shouldn’t be allowed?

I would love to hear from someone who thinks it looks good on them and why?

Is it an addictive thing? Once you start you keep going bigger and bigger?

I have NO ISSUE with nips and tucks and women doing whatever makes them feel good but I do not understand lip filler it’s the one thing looks universally awful.

I would hazard a guess that every single person that has cosmetic surgery such as lip fillers will have self esteem issues, whether they're aware of it or not. I'd love there to be enforced mental health assessments before anyone is allowed to disfigure their natural looks in this way. It's really quite sad.

Why does everyone have to like the way they look naturally? Not everyone is a supermodel and wanting to improve yourself doesn’t mean you have mental illness.

thecherryfox · 24/12/2024 21:53

I’m honestly sick of this cosmetic treatments and surgeries being the ‘norm’. The bright white gum shield looking teeth, the huge lips, the unattainable body type that is completely thin but toned in the ‘right’ places. Then there’s the eyelashes and the nails, then the hair having to be kept on top of and ‘perfect’. I’m so tired of seeing all these women morphing into one another and no one showing their quirks anymore. Someone with freckles, embrace it don’t cover it either foundation. Someone with a gap in their teeth, again embrace it don’t replace them.

its these ‘influencers’, social media and shows like love island that are changing how young people view beauty. The celebrity culture of celebrities in their 40’s still looking 20 that are making people terrified to age. I strongly believe if we wasn’t in this culture of social media, the world wouldn’t be like this.

This look is dying out a bit now, like the big slug eyebrows, I wonder if a more natural look is around the corner after what's been quite an intense overdone look.

I've been saying for a while now that very thin eyebrows 20s/70s style will be back soon. These things always go on a cycle. And lo and behold I saw my first pair of very thin, drawn on eyebrows last week on a girl in her early twenties. Her own eyebrows were completely waxed off and the drawn on ones were very theatrical and flambuoyant in shape.

As someone else upthread also mentioned, the other thing I've noticed is that when lip fillers are too extreme they push the upper lip up in such a way that creates a dark sort of 5 o' clock shadow on the upper lip. It looks like a moustache. Not quite what they were aiming for, I'm sure.

I also agree that in a few years time loads of women are either going to have a lot of lumpy scarring to their lips, or if they stop having the filler their lips will probably never recover their natural elasticity and shape, but be stretched, droopy and lax.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 24/12/2024 22:00

@CobaltRewind I agree! They very rarely look good. The worst ones I see are on the (female) Love Island contestants!

I hate the fake "art and craft" nails more, just so weird!

They look as tacky as fuck don't they? There's no way you can go about your day and do chores and normal stuff with them. Just for show they are, and for a few instagram pics! What on earth is the point? Waste of money!

I think it's for photos. 2 young girls I know aged 19 & 21 have excessive filler (and big eye lashes) and it looks pretty awful close up but in photos its less noticeable and perhaps does enhance photos.

You'll get people who have it, telling you theirs looks natural. It rarely does, especially the side profile.

Yes! The side profile! 🦆

I honestly don't understand them at all. Not only are they massively impractical and very unhygienic but they are ugly as fuck.

YES that that. ^

TheHateIsNotGood · 24/12/2024 22:11

So, some people like it. Like using fillers or even too much make up, it's a few people's idea of beauty/mate-worth. Such a shame when naturally beautiful/handsome people alter their looks to suit a trend. Even more of a shame when looks=the best.

haje · 24/12/2024 22:12

@TomorrowTodayYesterday agree

@ChubbyBubbyBoo

Not everyone has millions of pounds but they don't go out robbing banks.

For me, I'm really not attractive, and I do care. But I care more about others. If that makes sense. So if I have spare money I will keep my scruffy hoody and dad's nose and help someone else.

I probably have bigger mental health issues. But I do think that kind of extreme lip fillers, is a strange one.

PeloMom · 24/12/2024 22:14

I know someone who whenever is see them I think their lips will burst, that’s how much filler they have. But if they like it, who am I to judge?

VikingLady · 24/12/2024 22:20

I saw a tv programme about breast implants once, and lots of people specifically wanted the very circular ones that gave you a sort of line on the top. It was an example of conspicuous consumption. They wanted their implants to be obvious so that everyone could see they could afford them and that they cared about their appearance. Like 80s ad execs with flashy Rolexes, but surgical.

I had assumed obvious lip fillers were the same thing. Like overly white veneers and mahogany fake tan.

Onlyonekenobe · 24/12/2024 22:22

Round my parts, some women do it to belong to a specific “tribe”. They may not actually like the look in and of itself, but if they circulate or want to circulate in a specific set they need to have filler + Botox, tidy but done gel nails, Cartier or Van Cleef jewelry, constant low-level tan, no excess fat, Goyard or equivalent bag, blonde highlights etc. It’s just another badge of belonging for them, I think. Rarely is it overdone but you can always tell something has been injected.

eta Keira Knightly is looking a lot like Rachel Weisz these days! I’ve seen her in person a few times (RW), she’s gorgeous.

I loathe those kind of tits with a passion. I am not against people who are naturally very small on top having a boob job if it makes them happier, but like all the best enhancements they should be able to pass as natural, or at least get you wondering. The minute something is very obviously fake you just look trashy.

Because it swells when you get it done and then goes down and people miss the original look.

Because it’s unregulated. I could do an injection course (I’m not medically trained in anything), buy cheap filler and charge very attractive prices.

Because some injectors don’t give a shit what you look like and have no ethics and just care about money.

I had a surgical lip lift. I absolutely love it. It’s adds height to your lip as opposed to filler which just adds volume. I had filler once and it just wasn’t for me.

I like to have 2ml because men like them and I don't like to work. I think it's funny when older women's husbands try to look at them discretely in front of them, these threads always tickle me

And you think they are trying to look at you discretely because they find your lips attractive? I wouldn't assume that.

I am an 'older woman' and I can promise you my husband finds these over-pumped lips unattractive and ridiculous. If he was staring at you it wouldn't be for reasons you'd be flattered by.

eklaljdj · 24/12/2024 23:11

Do they? I have naturally big lips but men are usually too busy looking at my breasts to notice my mouth tbh.

I'm confused by this; are the men who like your lips paying you so you don't have to work???

cloudydays2 · 24/12/2024 23:17

Too many people care far too much about what others do to themselves. Some people like them some people don’t, if it’s not your thing then good for you! If someone wants massive lips then that’s their money to do so, if someone wants to stay natural then fair enough. Grown woman making shitty comments is worse than filler.

She’s too dense to realise that most of the men who look at her are doing it discreetly not because they don’t want their wives to see but because their wives have just said to them ‘fgs look at fish lips over there ‘ .

twobluehorses · 24/12/2024 23:36

Oh come on. This looks better after the lips have been done.

Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?
eklaljdj · 24/12/2024 23:39

@twobluehorses I genuinely don't think it does because they still look fake to me.
I can get on board with Keira Knightley though, just watch Black Doves and it wasn't something I noticed until mentioned on here. I shouldn't notice.

VikingLady · 25/12/2024 00:07

@TwigletsAndRadishes the "trashy" aspect was what the presenter was getting at iirc. But the people who had such intentionally obvious work done didn't see it that way - it was a conscious choice.

Not my choice, I'll admit.
