Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?

CobaltRewind · 24/12/2024 17:58

And AIBU to say it shouldn’t be allowed?

I would love to hear from someone who thinks it looks good on them and why?

Is it an addictive thing? Once you start you keep going bigger and bigger?

I have NO ISSUE with nips and tucks and women doing whatever makes them feel good but I do not understand lip filler it’s the one thing looks universally awful.

No doubt, they look universally awful. I know a young woman, very naturally pretty. Then I met her identical twin. Except she didn't look anything like her sister because she had massive lips and fillers, at 22. Her face is already distorted. It seems every other young woman has them now. I don't think lip skin has much collagen, surely it will stretch and they'll be left with shrivelled prune lips eventually?

I am expecting a pile on but let me just tell you that my own mother didn't notice I have a lip filler and she is the person who practically disowned my aunt for wearing fake eyelashes at an event.
It can be done tastefully just to replace what is naturally lost with age. However, before I committed to my very first treatment I did a lot of investigation and there is such thing as loss of perspective when you see yourself in the mirror every day having had them done. Lips swell up after treatment and you sort-of get used to it. Then the swelling goes down and, comparatively, the lips look as if nothing was done to them. That's where people will often go to have a top up and so the obsessive cycle begins.
So what I did and still do, I measured across the middle of my upper and lower lip before the treatment and 10 days after the first treatment. I now have an objective measure. If I catch myself thinking "oh, it's time for a top up", I get my ruler out. I've had 0.5-1 ml put in approximately once every 2-3 years using this system and it worked brilliantly for me. No duck lips in sight.

ItsCalledAConversation · 24/12/2024 20:07

Any kind of tweakment looks horrendously noticeable as soon as the face moves. Still for a photo - passably ok. Attempting conversation - horribly obvious, weird creases and slimy looking slick patches where the filler/botox is.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/12/2024 20:09

@avaritablevampire I disagree with you there, I know very few intelligent middle class women who spout this look-same goes for the pantomime eyebrows. If they do have a bit of filler or work on eyebrows it tends to be more subtle/ natural looking- I'm sure there will be some who like it very obvious , but I don't know them - same was true when we lived in Copenhagen - it just wasn't 'the look'. -

I've often said, can anyone show me a before/after lip filler pic where they look better with filler? I've yet to see one.

I don't know... How about this?
Just to note that the dent in the middle is a scar from an accident and not botched injection.

Why do people get massive amounts of lip filler?
largeprintagathachristie · 24/12/2024 20:15

I think people that have it done - including those on this thread who say theirs is oh so subtle - aren’t seeing the profile view. Which is duck like.

Scully01 · 24/12/2024 20:18

It is quite addictive, I've had it done once and as soon as I got a little and saw the change I asked for more to be put in. It was a total low self esteem thing though, as I'd put on some weight and instead of addressing the weight gain I focused on something that could be changed instantly for a price. Never had it done again as I already have quite full lips 🤦🏾‍♀️Also people get top ups too often, my filler was done about 3 years ago and I still think there is still some in my lips.

PerditaLaChien · 24/12/2024 20:22

I think a lot of this shit will backfire in 30 years time. You'll have a lot of folk walking round with faces like donatella versace.

I genuinely don't think the permanent "youth" look is very attractive. Lots of people manage to age naturally and gracefully just by taking care of diet & exercise etc. I find those faces far more pleasant to look at even if they do look older. There's nothing wrong with age.

ppqqrrss · 24/12/2024 20:25

how much does it cost?

Grapewrath · 24/12/2024 20:28

ehy do some women have bleached hair? Fake tan? Botox?
I’d guess it’s because they like that look. Others might not- because YOU don’t like it doesn’t mean it looks awful.
I personally don’t have filler but I don’t ever look at someone and think they look terrible for it. It’s personal taste tbh.

Twinklewonderkins · 24/12/2024 20:43

One of my friends does facial aesthetics. He’s a registered nurse.
Some girls literally say to him “ I want to look like a sex doll”.
So for whatever reason, some people do want that look.

Pumpkincozynights · 24/12/2024 19:04

I do think the fake look is in vogue amongst certain groups of people.
For example massive duck lips, huge jet black spider eyelashes, slug eyebrows, long acrylic or gel nails, bleached hair with black roots, hair extensions, thick make up. Oh and fake tan.
In the past I think people made more effort to try and make all this look natural. So more effort was made to cover up dark roots etc. Nails might be painted but they were one colour or nude, not acrylic with all sorts of patterns painted on.

And teeth, the big fake white ones like Rylans

stargazerlil · 24/12/2024 20:56

It’s just fashion, like in the 17th century when they wore huge powdered white wigs with birds in.

ItOnlyTakesTwoMinutes · 24/12/2024 21:03

Bluebellsnbowbells · 24/12/2024 18:31

Why pay money to have fuller lips though? It just looks terrible. Does no one take you to one side and say how bad it looks? I have never seen any lips ever that have thought need to look fuller.

Some are actually really subtle and can look beautiful, you wouldn’t know.

We have the impression all lip fillers look shit because the ones that clearly are fillers really do look horrible - by that point it’s way too far. I wonder if it’s a body dysmorphia kind of thing?

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/12/2024 21:04

Where’s the individuality? They all look so generic. I think the slug eyebrow trend is fading, but the acrylic nails are unpleasant.

twobluehorses · 24/12/2024 21:10

Michelle keegans are lovely. Nobody could disagree that it’s an improvement. Keira knightlys are also good and tess dalys.

teatoast8 · 24/12/2024 21:27

ppqqrrss · 24/12/2024 18:49

"often single parents" nice bit of stigmatising there. As a single parent I have to disagree!

I disagree too!

Starseeking · 24/12/2024 21:27

I have naturally very full lips and a large sticky out bottom. I've been asked before by strangers where I got both of them done 🙄🙄🙄

It's very much the fashion these days. I know of ladies between 20 and 45 who've had them done. None look good, or natural, but if they like it, and it makes them happy, it's their money to waste---- spend as they see fit.

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 24/12/2024 21:34

Lip fillers always, always look awful. And anyone who uses the word "tweakments" to describe having gunk put into their face is kidding themselves that they look natural and fresh and that no one can tell.

twobluehorses · 24/12/2024 21:35

I suspect lots of people who you think have real lips don’t

CinnamonJellyBeans · 24/12/2024 21:36

I can see why people might go for some stuff, like a bit of filler or botox.

The obvious treatments are a way of showing financial status, like a used car salesman sporting a thick gold chain.

It also sends a message to a particular type of man who likes his women to be malleable: "I will transform my face/hair/teeth/breasts for you. Let me be your doormat.

WalterdelaMare · 24/12/2024 21:40

I wonder if it’s like Botox, in that you only notice it when it’s bad?

LoyalTaupeTiger · 24/12/2024 21:40

Why on earth are you ok with chopping bits off a body, but not ok with putting bits in?
What's your view on boob jobs, or bbl?

Jifmicroliquid · 24/12/2024 21:43

I’ve never looked at lip fillers and thought “what lovely full lips”
They all look fake and pretty dreadful.

ThatsCute · 24/12/2024 21:49

Some women really like the “just punched in the face” look.
