Why when writing on here can't you just say the whole word instead of dd mil ect it's really annoying and lazy

OP posts:

I also hate "ofc" which doesn't make any sense. Surely it should be "oc", if anything.

Same structure as etc though so I think ofc is fine.

FuckThePoPo · 22/12/2024 08:21

Ah come on @Sunflowerinherfifties we are only taking the piss - you knew we would!

why have you got the hump today then? What's happened?

Balancedcitizen101 · 22/12/2024 08:23

I voted YANBU then responded properly because I'm not 12. I am new here and have started using some of the acronyms but admit on some posts I have no idea what they mean. When were they all agreed on? Does googling them work? IHNIHTW. You see what I did there? I used one I just made up that people probably wouldn't know. It saves people time but when it's massive post anyway what's the point? Each to their own ....

Not in a good mood this morning OP? Bad night sleep? Merry Christmas

mumda · 22/12/2024 08:25

Most of them are here: www.mumsnet.com/i/acronyms

You know there's no obligation to be on this site? You can use other websites that are more suited to your tastes. There are only 9 million mumsnetters after all, out of a female population age 16-64 of about 24 million (though obv some mumsnetters age 65+ as you don't stop being a mum at 65, and some men, so this is only approximate) so you can go find out where the other 15million ish hang out. I am sure they will have much better typing skills, much more interesting topics of conversation, and will be completely immune from the general culturally accepted behavior all over the Internet of using acronyms for commonly used terms. Don't let the door hit your arse as you leave.

Blabadder · 22/12/2024 08:35

GAFG!!

BeardofHagrid · 22/12/2024 08:36

I find it off putting too. Why not just write son, daughter, father etc? Very weird. A bit cult like.

Are you sure you’re not looking for The Tack Room?

Mill3nniel · 22/12/2024 08:38

"Etc" is not a full word and shortened should be "Etc" It's short for et cetera

Mill3nniel · 22/12/2024 08:39

Posted before I saw the updates

My guess would be "I have no idea how this works" is that right?

Why can’t you say the proper word instead of ‘ect’?

Especially if the abbreviation is 'etc'! Wish I could abbreviate 'abbreviation '!.

It would be perfectly ok to extend it to IHNFIHTW if the poster wanted.

It's shortened to "abbr" in the dictionary IIRC Grin

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/12/2024 08:47

Hilarious! If you're going to criticise others' use of language, best look at your own first, OP. Btw, 'whinny' is the noise a horse makes. I think you meant 'whiny'. Hth Grin

Etcetera is the word 🧐

Actually it's 'et cetera'. Two words.

OP probably has a "dinning" room as well. She may be off "fumming" at some of the replies assuming the OP is not a troll
