Why when writing on here can't you just say the whole word instead of dd mil ect it's really annoying and lazy

This is a new one on me.

The Secret Service Does Not Comment On Procedure.

It’s one from the old days, coined by the legendary OliviaMumsnet. She was known for her eyebrows, her Ahems & being a huge fan of The West Wing, which is where it comes from.

Actually it’s etc!

Not ect. 🤷‍♀️

adverb
adverb: etc.; adverb: &c.

  1. used at the end of a list to indicate that further, similar items are included.
  2. "protect seedling from damage caused by feet, lawnmowers, pets, etc."

Actually it’s etc. short for et cetera. Et means “and”, whilst cetera denotes the rest, thus meaning “and the rest”. Now combined into the one word etcetera. As the abbreviation does not include the final letter, there should be a full stop, which is usually ignored. Hth.

I don't mind acronyms in some cases, though I don't know why we have to put "D" in front of everything. "D dog" ... it's quicker just to write "dog" for goodness sake.

There's also a really irritating growing trend of just writing "w" for "with". People are typing really long, eloquent messages, but then using "w". For example "I'm really struggling w things this winter, can anyone help me?" Why!

Tomatina · 22/12/2024 00:07

Why are you telling me something I already know? That was the point of my post, I was replying to the OP.

I also hate "ofc" which doesn't make any sense. Surely it should be "oc", if anything.

Not ‘Electro convulsive therapy’.
