Mounjaro offending close "friends"

I have bitten the bullet and started using Mounjaro. I pay for it privately through a reputable private clinic , and in a nutshell its been incredible.

Long story as short as poss.... I'm a well built 5ft7 woman who has been anything from 10st to 13.7st over years , ideal weight 11st happy and feel good, have gone into perimenopause , started HRT and basically CANNOT shift stubborn 2st. I told my GP my plans and he agreed as BMI verging on obese (13st4) .....decision was 6 months in making with a LOT of research before starting it ....anyway ....

I have lost my first half stone ( in 10 days ) and with close friends at the weekend told them i was on the injection and how great i feel ( not just food noise but ADHD symptoms better too ) my friends were so happy for me bar one who could not hide her disgust. This person has a stunning figure, always been a petite size 8, always attracted a lot of male attention, and has been known to be quite fattest over the years to anyone chubby. She basically said it was cheating, said i would be fatter long term and i know that behind my back is slagging me off ..
I've always been confident despite my different weights but i did get a lot of compliments especially from other husbands of how well i looked , and it seemed to REALLY annoy her she has stopped messaging me as much and has declined Xmas invites for drinks at mine.
Its got me thinking that this injection is a real shift long term for men and women , but psychologically its maybe pissing off people that don't struggle????
Another friend was shocked i even told people but im not that sort of person , I'm an open book and chatty and don't see the point ? maybe i should have just kept my mouth shut ? AIBU to feel shocked and disappointed by this ?

Cool. They'll still be triggered :)

Innit tho!

I Went to buy it online before I spoke to a doctor. I was asked what I weighed and that was it. They kept reassuring me that they wouldn’t tell my doctor unless I wanted them to.

It was very, very easy.

And? What do you want - a rosette?

ThrillhouseVanHouten · 14/12/2024 22:28

SwingTheMonkey · 14/12/2024 19:17

That’ll be cracked down upon over the coming months, according to the government, so don’t fret petal.

This must’ve been a year ago. And I’m not worried for me, I wouldn’t use it.

My worry would be that people who shouldn’t be using it can get easy access to it.

I was hoping for a reform of the way these online pharmacies operate, how widely they advertise on social media and better conduct from them… but if that’s what you took from it…

Yeah - it is.

PinkArt · 14/12/2024 22:44

I think there already has @ThrillhouseVanHouten as your experience sounds very casual compared to mine in the last two months. Along with my weight they needed photos of me, plus my passport as proof of ID, and there was an online health questionnaire. I had to add my doctor's details and then it was reviewed and prescribed by a doctor at the pharmacy.
I'm sure there are extra measures still that could help reduce people getting it who shouldn't but it was far from me just saying I'm fat please can I have it.

What are you worried about? That it will happen behind your back?!

Ah, yeah. It wouldn’t have been a year ago you were trying to buy mounjaro. Thats only been available to buy on private prescription since February this year.
There are a multitude of drugs people manage to access, that shouldn’t have them. It’s sad, but ultimately not a reason why they shouldn’t be available to anyone who does need them. As I’ve said, there will be a huge crackdown on private prescribing in the coming months to weed out those pharmacists who aren’t very stringent in their consultations. Let’s just hope it doesn’t impact people who should have access to the medicine.

I wonder if these people crusade so passionately about other drugs being accessed by people they shouldn’t? I doubt it…

User14March · 14/12/2024 22:56

I know of many menopausal & stubbornly higher end of overweight legitimately privately prescribed the jabs.

Yes a year ago the government stepped in and tightened regulations for online prescribers so that you hade to provide significant evidence of weight and health conditions (lots of distressed posts bty women suddenly required to take and upload photographs etc). The Royal College of Pharmacology changed its rules in response and prescribing pharmacies changed their protocols in response.

ETA apologies, can see other PPs have already explained this.

estya · 15/12/2024 08:18

Your friend probably also believes that that she got over her depression by eating healthy and taking walks in the woods, so anyone on medication for depression isn't trying hard enough. And that ADHD medication is just an excuse for naughty boys.

Tricho · 15/12/2024 08:22

I was with you until the "attention from other husbands" remark.

Bit gross that you're revelling in that.

Weight loss injections should actually be called 'Insulin regulators'

Because that is their overarching function - regulating insulin processes that don't work properly, to fix the process of how the body metabolises food and sugar.

Mounjaro - the current most common 'weight loss injection' - does three main things;

1: regulates insulin production and makes it more effective
2: enables glucose to be processed where this was previously sub-optimal - leading to increase satiety levels and less stored as fat
3: slows down digestive transit to stabilise blood sugar from peaks

Appetite suppression is a side effect.
There are also receptors that are boosted to the brain to say 'no more
Fuel needed, we are good, thanks' .

They are so helpful to chronically obese people (like me) because these things don't work properly in people who are long term obese,

Either because they never did, or the excess weight caused them to malfunction,

I was overweight from aged 4 and put on my first diet pills when I was 9 or 10 (I'm 56 now).

The 'eat less, move more' mantra is too simplistic if your body can't properly process the food it's receiving,

I am highly educated and very successful - weight has been the one thing I've never managed to control long term, despite drive, ambition and success elsewhere.

Now I can, and I can look forward to much less risk from weight related illnesses as I age.

I hope more and more people can benefit and live longer too as a result.

Comin' in 'ere with your science - you should be ashamed! 😉

Actually, thank you that is really interesting.

I'm a T2 diabetic and have been prescribed MJ by my GP. It wasn't really explained but you have so I thank you.

Missed this in the OP.

Yuck. No wonder friends are not falling over with praise.

Alltheunreadbooks · 15/12/2024 10:26

I think two things can be right here at the same time.

The jabs are saving lives and probably easing pressure on the NHS long term.

However, they are being used by those that can afford them as a short cut to weight loss and it doesn't address the physiological issues as to why people are overweight and doesn't promote a healthy lifestyle.

Nobody should be outwardly judgy about this to friends, but equally the people on the jabs shouldn't brag about something that is akin to weight loss surgery/ gastric bands.

SwingTheMonkey · 15/12/2024 10:40

Can you explain this a little more please? As someone who is using the drug and has learnt a lot about the foods that cause me to gain weight and those I need to prioritise, whilst also re educating my brain about what a sensible sized portion is, I’m slightly confused. Oh - I’m also exercising for the first time in years. So yeah - where have you got this information from, please?

Yes, I'd be interested too.

Because for most of my life I thought the order of things should be: deal with psychological issues and then fix my eating habits.

But it turns out that when I've had help to fix my eating habits first, addressing underlying psychological issues becomes much, much easier.

I doubt this poster will be back, which is a shame because it sounds like they’re quite the expert. Which is often the case with people who have never used MJ.

FairyLightsInTheMist · 15/12/2024 12:41

This is really key, and I think detractors of WLIs just don't understand this.

Humphreyshead · 15/12/2024 12:44

As someone who is a size 8 and slim. I have absolutely no idea how hard it is to lose weight as I’ve always been slim. Therefore I have no right to comment on your weight loss journey… same as your ‘friend’

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 15/12/2024 17:52

I know, sorry, @GnomeDePlume - I should have stuck with 'drug that stops squidgy slackers stuffing their faces when they should do it anyway' as per some of critics 😂😂

Why do you need the quick fix drug if you know the psychological reasons why you are overweight , know about healthy eating and are exercising? Surely you would lose weight naturally?

Just admit it, the jabs are quicker and easier and you can afford them.
