Not going to name any specific women actors but I was just looking at one of my fave comedians whose just had a face full of fillers and she just didn't look great. She was about the same age as me (early 50s) and my friends and none of them have had anything done, (well maybe a little but it's not obvious if they have), but they all great and I'd be really shocked if any of them started to go down the route of such extreme fillers / botox etc.

I'm not saying I look like I've fallen into the fountain of youth, far from it, but I look, for want of a better word, normal.

I do get there is so much pressure on women in the public eye but after a certain stage of procedures it doesn't make anyone look any younger and just starts to make people look weird.

@blueshoes I feel for you, it can be tough to find the time. But you don't need much time to weight train, I only go twice a week now. That's all I need.
Weight and strength training isn't like doing lots of cardio. Where you have to do more and more to maintain the physique goals/fat loss. Strength training/muscle building has a compounding effect, meaning, the longer you do it, the easier it becomes, the more muscle you build, the more fat you burn and then you don't have to do as much anymore to maintain the benefits.
My DS has flown the nest and is away at Uni/working, my parents don't live in the UK and they're still mobile and independent! They're in their 70s now.
I also make my health and fitness my top priority in my life, following having sciatica I had to. No choice. I now treat my own physical health accordingly, my training schedule is as important to me as breathing and eating.
It's not a hobby I hate to do, I enjoy it. I look forward to it. It's a chance for some 'me' time too!
You won't see me doing these crazy cardio classes where I exhaust myself and feel crap after and can't face again.
I work hard but at my own pace. It's after all, you against you.
Sciatica caused both a mental and physical shift, this I guess is what happens when you entirely lose your mobility overnight. I was overweight and not taking enough care of myself. I didn't make my physical health enough of a priority and was given a reminder!
One of the best lessons I've learned in my life so far.
I'm grateful I had sciatica.

I had a taste of my own frailty, my own future, if I didn't make the changes necessary. So I'm training for my older self NOW.

An author I loved reading died because of cosmetic surgery. She was having something done to her chin and I think there was a reaction to the anaesthetic, she was in a coma and died after a few days. Yes, she could have died from any surgery but cosmetic procedures are by and large unnecessary, so to lose your life because society tells you you'll feel/be/look better if you just have this/these procedure(s) is just horribly tragic. I remember being a selfish bitch when I heard what had happened. I was angry with her because I wanted more books which was so nice of me. And then I was just so sad that it had happened, that a funny, talented woman had died because her chin wasn't "perfect".

The Brazilian butt lift is a worrying procedure with most decent surgeons refusing to go there and a lot of deaths because it's dangerous and easy to botch. Liposuction can also be a dangerous one. I think that's the sugery that Kanye West's mother was having when she died.

And I post this but deep in my head I think that if I could afford it and be guaranteed not to look like a trout I'd probably have a little filler in my lips and/or whatever would lessen the (ex) smoker's lines around my lips and the lines "pulling my lips down". It won't happen because I can't afford it nor get the guarantee but I'm acknowledging my hypocrisy because I guess that's how strong the societal pull toward "perfecting oneself" has become. You can see how wrong it can be, know that success, whatever that might be, is far from guaranteed, think that it's not at all right for you and still think "maybe just that little tweak."

Angrymum22 · 11/12/2024 03:22

The male equivalent is Simon Cowell. He has been under a lot of scrutiny regarding the cosmetic work he has had done.
I see increasingly more women, who are not celebrities, following the trend as they hit their 40s. They look like Caricatures and really stick out in normal life. I was in the doctors waiting room recently when a woman walked in, she turned heads for all the wrong reasons. Her face looked grotesque but I suspect in her eyes the fact we all stared reinforced, in her head, how attractive she perceives herself.

If you have always been a head turner it’s possible that you will be unaware of the changing reasons you now attract attention.
Both ends of the beauty spectrum tend to attract attention but if you have been a natural beauty in your youth you probably are not conscious of the difference.

LL has had a deep plane facelift. The optimum time to have a face lift, particularly a deep plane lift is in your mid-late 30s, and then once a decade thereafter. Kate Beckinsale is done similarly. Sarah Jessica Parker has bemoaned that she missed the window to have work done (such as a face lift) and now it would be too obvious she had (surgical) work done.

Face lifts, particularly deep plane ones work best on faces that haven't been tweaked with botox or filler.

rewilded · 11/12/2024 08:01

I disagree about LL I think she has looks waxen and not at all natural. If this is an example of a deep plane facelift then I am not a fan.

I think they say no filler for facelifts. As it lasts a lot longer than people realise - like up to 20 years. And it migrates. Botox wears off so I can’t see why that would be an issue

I would just like to say Pamela Anderson.

bloody amazing woman. Looks amazing too, despite not conforming to Hollywood pressure.

clearly she felt the pressure as a young actress but happy for her that she can embrace her looks now.

Might be because she's vegan. I'm not saying all vegans look great, but I think she really does.

Portakalkedi · 11/12/2024 09:07

Re Nicole Kidman, I watched a film with her and Zac Efron, and they were like a pair of shop dummies, such was the lack of human emotion on their waxy faces. Had to stop watching as it was so bad.

It's because of the way botox can weaken the facial muscles, not just temporarily, but permanently. A deep plane face lift works with all layers of the face including muscle, hence the caution for those who have had botox. Apparently surgeons get the best results on virgin faces (much like colourists with virgin hair).

Sarah Jessica Parker looks great - one of the things I love about her is seeing a woman on screen looking amazing and simultaneously looking her age.

Ah ok. Yes muscles can weaken and atrophy with Botox. Nicole Kidman’s doctor must have had a hard time!

I was watching the ballet last night and Darcy Bussell looks amazing. Whatever she has had done is good work.

It’s one of my favourite comedy sketches - it’s so on point - Mrs Claus and She Means Well. Plus the Sally Fields point - glad it made you laugh as much as it does me

What normal person would have any sort of face lift in their mid thirties which is the prime of life and when everything is still in place, that is insane and honestly a ridiculous suggestion, no doubt some online cosmetic surgeon is peddling this ridiculous notion.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 11/12/2024 11:42

Demi Moore looks great, simply because the work that she's had done looks incredible.

I have never read that you should start in your 30s and then every decade.
I have heard pre 50 and then potentially one more

Gowlett · 10/12/2024 21:50

I can understand older women wanting to stop time, preserve their looks. It never looks good… But I can see why they want to do it.

But young women altering their perfectly good faces? Tulisa just looks terrible. And most of the reality TV girls, ruining their looks.

Edited

I think they can look very good done well

uptheculdesac, ha ha, I remember once reading that the most high-pressure job in the world is Brad Pitt’s Plastic Surgeon!

User14March · 11/12/2024 16:39

@uptheculdesac lighting in the first picture I think making a big difference too? I am amazed by how much of a part that can play.

Ladyswhatlunch · 11/12/2024 17:47

Brad certainly didn’t look that ‘fresh’ at the formula 1 at the weekend, pictures are not a good barometer of what people really look like in the flesh.

Beentheredonethat0 · 11/12/2024 19:57

Brad Pitt had great work done. His facelift didn't include bleph which makes it look more natural and as if nothing was done.

I was watching Michael Fassnender in The Agency the other night and you can tell he's had a bleph and it doesn't suit him at all. Looks weird.

Lighting is EVERYTHING when it comes to photography and film.
If you've been on a film set, you see how critical it is.

blueshoes · 11/12/2024 20:08

@Beentheredonethat0 interesting about how not doing a bleph (I assume you mean upper blepharoplasty) makes a facelift less obvious.

I did not think Michael Fassbender looked weird to me. The one whose eyes have been looking weird for a while is Robert Redford.

Beentheredonethat0 · 11/12/2024 20:16

@blueshoes yes meant upper bleph. Not sure if it was Brad or his surgeon decided, but it was a smart move to leave them or if they were touched, it's a subtle change.

I've always thought this about them. I find it's a difficult procedure to get right, from the results I mean. They end up looking startled or one eye is more open that the other. I've rarely seen a really great result. And because some individuals have very distinctive eye lid folds, ie. Renee Zellweger, when they have them removed, it doesn't look like them anymore.

Beentheredonethat0 · 11/12/2024 20:20

@blueshoes yep, Redford no doubt had a bad upper bleph 🤷‍♀️ a bit like buccal fat removal, not a lot you can do if it's not done well!

I've heard of patients unable to fully close their eyes again to sleep too.
So even the good upper blephs look off to me.
Uncanny Valley territory for me.

Beentheredonethat0 · 11/12/2024 20:23

@blueshoes seen Fassbender in The Agency? I can see the work he's had done. It's good work but the upper bleph was overdone.
Sorry I'm a bit pernickety 😂
