Not going to name any specific women actors but I was just looking at one of my fave comedians whose just had a face full of fillers and she just didn't look great. She was about the same age as me (early 50s) and my friends and none of them have had anything done, (well maybe a little but it's not obvious if they have), but they all great and I'd be really shocked if any of them started to go down the route of such extreme fillers / botox etc.

I'm not saying I look like I've fallen into the fountain of youth, far from it, but I look, for want of a better word, normal.

I do get there is so much pressure on women in the public eye but after a certain stage of procedures it doesn't make anyone look any younger and just starts to make people look weird.

M&S polyester and LIDL is a choice. Not something forced on you as a punishment for being old and crepey.

Judi Dench is one of the best looking women around, and she’s got masses of lines.

I might have agreed with you a few years ago. As I hit my mid 60s, I see friends floored by health conditions that make them shuffle round with a stick. For some, it takes all their energy to get dressed in the morning and looking stylish is just not on the agenda.

It was a shock to realise that what I had dismissed as "old lady legs" - swollen, purplish, crammed into the most practical and least elegant of shoes - was not someone "letting themselves go", but the inevitable consequences of some of the diseases of old age.

I'm not there myself, I love my style (though I suspect it's a bit Prue Leith for some) and am working hard at keeping fit and active. But I can see quite clearly that how we age is as much about luck and genetics as it is about any choices we make.

And having spent some time getting more up close and personal with mid 80 year old bodies than I might have wanted to, even if we are lucky enough to live that long in good health, I know exactly what we will look like then. And I'm OK with it.

So I find this discussion deeply ageist and superficial. A few women with good genes, health, money or surgeons will look supremely good as they age. Some of us will look shockingly aged and most of us will fall somewhere in the middle. But ageing is coming for all of us, and judging others for their style choices while judging others for trying too hard to stay young is a foolish denial of what lies ahead.

Also - what's wrong with Lidl? 😁

I agree that misogyny and ageism is at play . It is depressing to think of the focus on looking young etc that permeates its way through all parts of society .

I think that film / netflix / tv etc actresses will have a huge amount of pressure on them to maintain a youthful look . As well as other women in the public eye .

This will not be the same amount of pressure we will feel , but as females we are fully aware that we have been judged on our appearance by men and other women . I do get the irony of pointing this out when we are discussing celebrity appearances. There is a double standard there but it is still a relevant discussion .

I think Nicole Kidman looks great ( figure wise but not so much facially ) . She has difficulty expressing her emotions due to the amount of work she has had done . Look at her recent Graham Norton appearance .

However comparing her to e.g Sigourney Weaver and Andie McDowall is probably slightly incongruous . Neither Sigourney Weaver , Sharon Stone or Andie Mc Dowall have had multiple leading lady / romantic roles for probably a good few years . I think they all look amazing and admire them greatly for their ageing gracefully .Sigourney Weaver is still working on the Alien films and long may this continue , but that is more action / horror / sci - fi role than a romantic love interest .

I appreciate also that Nicole Kidman is younger in any event . She has continued to have the leading lady / romantic roles . Two of her films / netflix roles recently she has also been cast as an older woman being pursued by a younger man . Agree also that Zac Efron for one of these also has had questionable procedures .

So Nicole Kidman will still be getting offered these roles , she is a great actress and her name attached to a film will ensure funding etc .So it also boils down to money as well and how long stars can remain bankable . She also has wanted to continue to accept these roles .

It does seem that those actresses who are seen as " character actresses " and may not have been known for stunning conventional good looks are able to have greater longevity . But whilst there are exceptions most of these aren't being routinely cast in the big romantic films as the leading lady .

I think there is a move against ageism and some of the recent romantic films with older 50 / 60 plus actors have been great , but I am not sure they have been universally popular with the younger age groups .

I would say that I greatly admire those celebrities / those in the public eye who are not actively encouraging / even discouraging their offspring from going into similar roles due at least to this public pressure and scrutiny .

NurseButtercup · 10/12/2024 15:53

I think the red head you are referring to is the actress Lindsey Lohan? She looks amazing. I understand that Dr Steven Levine in New York did the surgery and Dr Radmila Lukian in Dubai has done the skin rejuvenation work.

If I could afford it I would absolutely, definitely undergo surgery. I don't recognise myself when I look in the mirror. I've also stopped doing filler after hearing Dr Amir Karam explain how it damages your skin in the long term.

So until I win the lottery or somehow become rich, I'm relearning how to love my face as it ages (sob), and I'm cutting out sugar and alcohol.

I finally fully understand the following motto:
When you look good you feel good, when you feel good you look good.

FridayNight1975 · 10/12/2024 15:53

I just wish these actresses would just come out and say ‘I had work done because I wanted or I’m insecure about x’.

But they all say it’s because otherwise you won’t find work, when at the same time we see plenty of untouched actresses get role after role.

i don’t for one second believe that Nicole Kidman wouldn’t have gotten any of her recent roles if she hadn’t had work done.

it’s like when Mark Whalberg came out with his crazy 3am workout routine and said you don’t work in Hollywood unless you’re in top form, bullshit.

User14March · 10/12/2024 16:36

@FridayNight1975 & yet Hugh Grant was told he was grossly fat at 12.5 stone & 5ft 11 & told to sort it out sharpish.

I came to terms with my 90 year old face by making a point of smiling whenever I saw a mirror. a) I look better smiling b) it's nice to have someone smile back at you from the mirror.

(I'm not 90, I just think I look it. But I don't care)

Justleaveitblankthen · 10/12/2024 17:56

Well I love Pammy. However, she may be going make up free, but she is 100% still having secret nips and tucks.
I guarantee.

Appalonia · 09/12/2024 21:27

Totally agree. I find some older actresses almost painful to look at now because the work they've had done just makes them look so...strange. I was watching a film recently with Brooke Shields in, we 're the same age, late 50s and she was so stunning in her youth, but I swear I look better than her now, just cos I haven't messed with my face! ( I DON'T mean that in a boastful way, it's just such a shame what she's done to her face.) I guess actresses are under a lot of pressure from the industry, and quite a few older actors are getting work done now too, which looks even more weird. Even young women are getting work done now, on the latest MAFS, half the women had had botox, fillets etc and it didn't look good!

This doesn't look like a face that's been messed around with
Sad you think she looks bad

I think there’s a sweet spot where lots of work is usually an improvement - would I like to look like Nicole Kidman at 70 as she does now? (Know she’s not 70 yet) Hell yes, if a toss up between this & saggy crone, crepey & old dumpy womanish in MS polyester in Lidl aisles.

Victoria B not an actress but she’s 50 & looks incredible. Look at her Spice Girl audition tapes. Fab work or is it the fish ;) Seriously, she looks amazing.

I feel like I've fallen into a parallel universe where someone thinks Brook Sheilds looks unnatural and Victoria Beckham looks good. I think she looks weird af. Her mouth looks stretched like Zippy's mouth

I would just like to say Pamela Anderson.

bloody amazing woman. Looks amazing too, despite not conforming to Hollywood pressure.

clearly she felt the pressure as a young actress but happy for her that she can embrace her looks now.

She looks great, so youthful without the overfilled weird cat's eyed look. I wonder why she doesn't just put basic makeup on like mascara and blusher though? She would look exactly the same as she did in her heyday. There aren't many women of her age that would go so obviously sans makeup particularly when they knew they'd be photographed.

Pamela Anderson looks incredible.

She's had a facelift or two

SemperIdem · 10/12/2024 18:11

No idea if she’s had any work, but Jane Seymour has aged phenomenally well and must be well into her 70’s now.

uptheculdesac · 10/12/2024 18:18

User14March · 09/12/2024 22:28

Trinny Woodall I think looks amazing at 60 plus. I don’t think she’s had a facelift just ‘tweaks’ & her ‘get up & go’ is enviable!

Caroline Stanbury had a good face lift before 50, not sure she needed it.

I think being on screen potentially problematic as you can look facially fine in the mirror & baggy, crepey saggy & lined on the big screen or even on a humble Teams meeting. Influencers etc I think sometimes overdo filler etc as you then look perfect on TicTok etc but overdone in real life.

Mooooo Trinny's mouth makes me gag. I literally switch off anything she is on. When her face pops up on social media I have to delete it. That mouth has been filled to the point that it looks just awful. Horrible.

uptheculdesac · 10/12/2024 18:22

User14March · 09/12/2024 22:42

@PrincessHoneysuckle you’re right & she’s often held as gold standard by women seeking ‘work’. I expect the best ‘work’ is prohibitively expensive & surgeons booked for years unless you have clout. Cheap work shows.

Interesting that apparently Madonna looks good in real life! I think being very physically fit into your 60s/70s/80s makes you appear much younger in the flesh. The way you move counts for a lot.

Madonna moves bizarrely considering she was a dancer

Renee zellweger put on weight for that role. She said she found it very difficult. She was a size 12.

Do you mean Bridget Jones?

Speedweed · 09/12/2024 22:46

They've all had facelifts - look at the jaw lines. All taut and no double chins!

They have an early facelift in their late thirties/early forties (normally coincides with having their babies, so they have a year or two to recover and for the lift to settle). The men are at it too - Rufus Sewell had a face lift which was a bit tight and he didn't look right, so then disappeared again for a few years before coming back and looks great.
Then they have a routine of non-surgical tightening to keep everything in place. Botox and fillers as needed whilst they aren't working, and then those are allowed to wear off in time for filming so they can move their eyebrows, have expressions etc.

I prefer those who let themselves age (even if at a slower rate) like Kristen Scott Thomas, Meryl Streep, Pamela Anderson to those who seem desperate to stay looking 'young' eg Madonna, Jlo, Nicole Kilmun etc.

Not everyone gets a double chin. I don't have one. My neck is a little softer but I don't have loose skin and a wattle

I've just posted pictures of my jawline 🫤
I haven't had surgery or had any procedures other than using tretinoin and vitamin C

My mother still had a jaw line in her 80s. Not firm firm but she had zero double chin . .

I. Ant see how this doesn't look 58 to you. She looks great. I think she's really attractive. And natural. What do you mean the eyes? These look like 58 year old eyes. Hell. Trey are wrinklier than mine

@uptheculdesac have you had lip filler? Your lips look amazing either way.

TorroFerney · 10/12/2024 18:51

Mercurial123 · 09/12/2024 21:53

She's had a face lift.

Was just going to say that! Not wearing make up does not mean no plastic surgery! She is only acceptable to the media as she looks so fantastic with no make up because of the plastic surgery. It's like the woman who played Barbie she's had her eyes and nose done and she was already very attractive to start with and young.

User14March · 10/12/2024 18:52

@uptheculdesac in other photos VB looks amazing & on her make-up videos.

Oh come on she's had botox , and subtle fillers. she's just not gone wild so she has some little wrinkles. She's probably not had an eyelid lift I grant you but please let's not kid ourselves.

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 10/12/2024 18:54

Fillers, botox etc are incredibly ageing. I see young women having this shit done and it ages them 15yrs overnight. Same is the case for older women, but it's even more pronounced because your attention is drawn to it more.
