AIBU to think famous women don't look worse because they age, it's because of the surgery.

Not going to name any specific women actors but I was just looking at one of my fave comedians whose just had a face full of fillers and she just didn't look great. She was about the same age as me (early 50s) and my friends and none of them have had anything done, (well maybe a little but it's not obvious if they have), but they all great and I'd be really shocked if any of them started to go down the route of such extreme fillers / botox etc.

I'm not saying I look like I've fallen into the fountain of youth, far from it, but I look, for want of a better word, normal.

I do get there is so much pressure on women in the public eye but after a certain stage of procedures it doesn't make anyone look any younger and just starts to make people look weird.

I think there’s a sweet spot where lots of work is usually an improvement - would I like to look like Nicole Kidman at 70 as she does now? (Know she’s not 70 yet) Hell yes, if a toss up between this & saggy crone, crepey & old dumpy womanish in MS polyester in Lidl aisles.

Victoria B not an actress but she’s 50 & looks incredible. Look at her Spice Girl audition tapes. Fab work or is it the fish ;) Seriously, she looks amazing.

I think Victoria beckham looks good. But she looks 50. And nothing wrong with that.

@ChanelBoucle T’s lips look very full back in 2003 too (?) Although face narrower so I hear you here. She’s very striking in real life.

Yes, Trinny had a lovely full mouth when younger, it was her trademark so I can see why she’s probably scared of losing it. However IMO it now looks unnaturally full for a mature woman. She was/is very beautiful and if she’d left it alone she would still have full lips for a 60 year old but now the lips of a twenty year old on a sixty year old woman just look bizarre. As do the rest of her treatments. I think it bothers me about Trinny more than most because she peddles anti-ageing skincare yet clearly doesn’t have the confidence to rely on her products alone to achieve the look she wants for herself 🤷‍♀️

I would just like to say Pamela Anderson.

bloody amazing woman. Looks amazing too, despite not conforming to Hollywood pressure.

clearly she felt the pressure as a young actress but happy for her that she can embrace her looks now.

But she’s had a facelift - this irks me as everyone comments on her natural beauty. Yes she’s not overfilled and doesn’t wear much makeup, but she has had surgery!!

Carouselfish · 10/12/2024 08:01

I know. It doesn't make them look younger, just surgeried! Gladiator 2, when Lucilla came out I almost yelled No!
But think it is a status thing as much as anything, so rich women are expected to as much as wearing designer clothes. I do look forward to it not being the case.

Cooriedoon · 10/12/2024 08:08

The older actresses who haven't obviously had work done, like Julia Roberts, Susan sarandon, Julianne Moore et al are all ageing beautifully. The rest looks like android waxworks. Makes me both sad angry for women that this is what society has become.

Carouselfish · 10/12/2024 08:10

No-one mentioned Andie MacDowell for aging normally?

Moonlightstars · 10/12/2024 08:13

Anotherparkingthread · 09/12/2024 21:37

I think these threads are awfully smug and self congratulatory. Everybody circle jerking how morally superior they are because they haven't caved in to societal pressures to stay youthful and attractive.

Frankly, nobody else's face is in of our business. And if you get off on putting other women down you have caved to entirely different societal pressures and are not the feminist you believe yourself to be.

To a point I agree but there's so much pressure to look young. I wish there was a lot more pressure to embrace aging.

MJnotMJ · 10/12/2024 08:20

You can’t think that Juliane Moore and Andie Macdowell etc have not had surgery? They’ve had subtle surgery and been (generally) careful with the fillers but they’ve had work done

I don’t think these comments are self congratulatory at all.

these women are in the public eye. They influence how we all look, as they set the standard in culture of what is ‘attractive’ and what us plebs should aspire to look like.

but many of them look awful. Plastic surgery is ironically- ageing. However, I know many women in 50’s and 60’s who have possibly had some subtle work done and look great - wrinkles and all.

what these women look like is a reflection of the film industry and how sexist it is. Catherine Zeta Jones was getting an eye lift at 29. It’s crazy. I think it’s very feminist to point out how women are forced to maintain impossible standards of beauty that an objectively beautiful woman has to have plastic surgery before 30 to stay in work.

yes she has had surgery. Everyone knows that.

i just like that she’s realised surgery and chasing youthful looks isn’t always the best option, and that it’s ok to age.

she looks far better now than when she was having the surgeries, wearing the full make up etc, that’s my point. Natural can look amazing, and can look better than those who do keep up with the Botox and fillers

FridayNight1975 · 10/12/2024 08:25

Kerry Russell looks incredible on the Diplomat, so naturally beautiful.

i know she’s only 48, but some would have had work done by now.

there are so many close ups and she’s not even wearing that much make up,

MJnotMJ · 10/12/2024 08:25

@Anotherparkingthread Not putting anyone down - I am commenting because I had an upper bleph done and know how subtle but excellent it has been for me! These women in the limelight are put in an impossible position and I don’t blame them for having work done. I plan to continue it myself if I can afford to (surgery, not fillers - devils own work those are). And I hate the way Joe bloggs thinks these women are aging well and yet Joe bloggs can’t compete and feels down about their own aging.

Joan Collins apparently has her own camera crew, lighting makes a big difference too. What an icon. Agree she looks fab which I said upthread & also she’s always been quite astonishingly beautiful I think. That helps.

Interesting re: men & surgery becoming more common. Brad Pitt’s looks good, poss David Beckham’s had tweaks? Has Simon Cowell had a facelift?

she's a beautiful woman, but I find it terribly sad that at 91, she's clearly spent most of her long life thinking about and worrying about how she looks on the outside. It's depressing.

Delatron · 10/12/2024 08:32

PerditaLaChien · 09/12/2024 23:08

However, I think we are recently finally seeing some good work. Mainly very expensive face lifts (rather than filler.) See Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay lohan is only 38!

The main differences are she's lightened her hair and done more glowy bronzed make up, you've lost what had become a harsher contrast between very fair, almost translucent skin & red/auburn hair. She does look like she's had filler in her upper lip but plenty of women still have great skin at 38.

I know Lindsay Lohan is still young. But she’d messed up her face with drink and drugs and bad procedures. I was using her as an example of the ‘good work’ we are now seeing and also corrective work from previous mistakes. But I agree it’s easier for work to look good in younger people. Maybe she was a bad example but I’m just pointing out a trend.

Kristen Wiig is another example of someone who has had some very good work done recently.

I did used to despair that despite all the money int he world and access to the best doctors, celebs would still mess their faces up. I do think work is getting better. Especially facelifts.

Doggymummar · 10/12/2024 08:33

Someone asked up thread has Simon Cowell had work! Presume sarcasm.

DancingLions · 10/12/2024 08:37

I think it's true that women can't win, no matter what. If no one had work done, there'd be cries of how they've "let themselves go".

I'm just glad that I am in a circle where no one gets work done. We're all just aging as we are. For so many young women now who are already in the cycle of fillers and botox etc, it's going to be so much harder to stop doing all that.

Delatron · 10/12/2024 08:41

With regards to men - I don’t think David Beckham’s work
looks good. Men should really stay away from fillers and Botox. I mean annoyingly they age better than women - due to hormones. And righty or wrongly (wrongly) there are less societal pressures on them to look young.

However Brad’s facelift is a good one..

Pussycat22 · 10/12/2024 08:41

BishyBarnyBee nailed it , well said !
A 70 year old person is a 70 year old person no matter what they have done. They are delusional.

User14March · 10/12/2024 09:16

@jellybellysaregood Joan’s beauty & intelligence conferred huge power & confidence. She’s been unusually savvy from 16 & I think focused on maintenance & general longevity rather than line chasing.

I think Kevin Costner ((69) looks fantastic. If he’s had work done it’s really good. He still looks like himself. And I still would.

dynamiccactus · 10/12/2024 09:56

I also agree with you OP.

People who've had work done look like they've had work done. They don't look younger.

Much better to age gracefully and make the most of what you have. There are plenty of non-surgical options that make you look better and obviously if you have the ££££ you can indulge in them!

Also - a lot of things make you look stupid, like lip fillers.

dynamiccactus · 10/12/2024 09:58

An example of someone who looks good, but doesn't (to me) look like she's had surgery is Glynis Barber (now 68 and people may remember her from Blakes 7 and Dempsey & Makepeace).

That isn't just cosmetic though - if you have droopy lids it affects your sight.

Disturbia81 · 10/12/2024 10:04

I used to think "why are they disfiguring themselves, they genuinely look weird and ugly" it just totally flummoxed me why they would make themselves into something unattractive when surely they're trying to be the opposite?
Same with all the love island types
I've come to the conclusion that they know how weird they look but ANYTHING is better than wrinkles to them. Anything is better than sagging. Even if it means looking like a waxwork. They are actually trying to achieve the fake plastic look.
