Not going to name any specific women actors but I was just looking at one of my fave comedians whose just had a face full of fillers and she just didn't look great. She was about the same age as me (early 50s) and my friends and none of them have had anything done, (well maybe a little but it's not obvious if they have), but they all great and I'd be really shocked if any of them started to go down the route of such extreme fillers / botox etc.

I'm not saying I look like I've fallen into the fountain of youth, far from it, but I look, for want of a better word, normal.

I do get there is so much pressure on women in the public eye but after a certain stage of procedures it doesn't make anyone look any younger and just starts to make people look weird.

They've all had facelifts - look at the jaw lines. All taut and no double chins!

They have an early facelift in their late thirties/early forties (normally coincides with having their babies, so they have a year or two to recover and for the lift to settle). The men are at it too - Rufus Sewell had a face lift which was a bit tight and he didn't look right, so then disappeared again for a few years before coming back and looks great.
Then they have a routine of non-surgical tightening to keep everything in place. Botox and fillers as needed whilst they aren't working, and then those are allowed to wear off in time for filming so they can move their eyebrows, have expressions etc.

I prefer those who let themselves age (even if at a slower rate) like Kristen Scott Thomas, Meryl Streep, Pamela Anderson to those who seem desperate to stay looking 'young' eg Madonna, Jlo, Nicole Kilmun etc.

Sigourney Weaver was on Graham Norton the other night and looked incredible...so beautifully natural. I've also been watching Slow Horses and Kristen Scott Thomas is just stunning, not a procedure in sight and minimal make up.

It's a shame they are in the minority and are not the norm for females in the oublic eye. They are wondeful role models for ageing gracefully and naturally.

A PP mentioned Joan Collins, I saw her a few weeks ago in her show, I'm not sure what she's had done but for 91 she was fabulous and so sharp and witty.

I agree with you about Sigourney, what a beautiful woman. She has a lined forehead and checks but looks so much better than Nicole Kidman, Cher etc.

PerditaLaChien · 09/12/2024 22:55

I genuinely think the women in their 50s/60s/70s and beyond who've allowed their faces and bodies to age naturally and gracefully look better than the ones who look arguably younger but artificially so. Nothing gives you back what time takes away, you are better to accept and embrace change.

User14March · 09/12/2024 22:56

@Speedweed I know what you mean but Meryl now apparently admits to being open to ‘work’ & possibly has had eyes done. The average 72 year old doesn’t look like Meryl. Pam too has had work it’s the ‘ no make up’ look that’s getting current press. Often people mistake subtle work for no work.

PerditaLaChien · 09/12/2024 22:57

Sigourney Weaver looks fabulous.

PerditaLaChien · 09/12/2024 22:59

Oh and its possible to look like sigourney weaver at 75 without work. My mums skin etc does - she eats well, gets lots of exercise and is always busy. She is about a size 12/14 which i think looks better than very slim as you age.

Newstartplease24 · 09/12/2024 23:00

I don’t like how NK looks now at all. That sticking out mouth gives her no range of expression; all she has is a sort of serious / judicious pout whatever is going on. It works in a way for a lot of the sort of solemn parts she gets married to the worst man in the world, but it’s heavy and boring. When she was very young she had unusually (unfashionably) delicate features and there was something a bit special about that. Now I don’t like looking at her

PerditaLaChien · 09/12/2024 23:01

Kristen scott thomas also looks terrific.

User14March · 09/12/2024 23:03

@PerditaLaChien I see that but morphing into a dumpy, aged crone & seeing an old woman rising ‘terrible fish’ like to meet me in mirror isn’t fun. Look at Trinny at 60 toned, great skin & full of pizazz or an incoming naturally & gracefully aged Ena Sharples? It’s interesting we’re only talking about great beauties or the attractive in naturally aged camp.

I think if I could see a picture of what they'd have looked like now without having work done, vs with the work done, I'd rather look like the former. They would look like glamorous, fit, slim, well-looked after women (who were already blessed with good genes in the looks department), with a few more wrinkles, looking their age more, but without the slight uncanny valley look. Definitely preferable imo.

It’s not just about wrinkles though, it’s the sag that is ageing, the slack jawline, the turkey neck, the upper eyelids drooping so it’s hard to put on make up because your eyelids disappear, the downward turn of the mouth, the thinning of the lips, I could go on. Some of them go too far but I can fully understand why they do it, they have the resources so if they have work to counteract the sag I don’t blame them one bit. As an aside I think a good facelift and upper blepharoplasty look great, it’s the fillers if taken too far that give the uncanny valley look.

Newshoos · 09/12/2024 23:07

I think some look amazing. Kylie, Amanda Holden and Trinny Woodall spring to mind. Some like Victoria B and Jennifer Anniston don’t look so well to me. I never actually thought JA was pretty but she had sweet and delicate features which just seem to have been hardened and masculinised with all the procedures.

PerditaLaChien · 09/12/2024 23:08

However, I think we are recently finally seeing some good work. Mainly very expensive face lifts (rather than filler.) See Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay lohan is only 38!

The main differences are she's lightened her hair and done more glowy bronzed make up, you've lost what had become a harsher contrast between very fair, almost translucent skin & red/auburn hair. She does look like she's had filler in her upper lip but plenty of women still have great skin at 38.

Catasleep · 09/12/2024 21:41

Pamela Anderson looks incredible.

Yes the surgery has really helped her age naturally…….

My mum isn't a "great beauty" she's just an ordinary smiley energetic woman and she looks great she just doesn't look like a woman of 25 and that's fine. Good can look good in different ways.

OnLockdown · 09/12/2024 23:17

Women I think look great without having had loads of work done.

Kate Winslet 49
Linda Cardellini 49
Toni Colette 52
Monica Belluci 60
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu 61
Jodie Foster 62
Kristin Scott Thomas 64

(They've probably had some)

rewilded · 09/12/2024 23:27

Kate Winslet is very refreshing.

User14March · 09/12/2024 23:30

@Ladyswhatlunch yes, you’ve nailed it. I think those with almond shaped eyes are prob more likely to stray into ‘piss holes in snow’ territory in time. Who wants to sag if it can be avoided?

User14March · 09/12/2024 23:31

@rewilded Kate W is an interesting one as she really might have had ‘nothing’ done. She’s always been intelligent, sassy & confident & her beauty seems to shine from that place.

User14March · 09/12/2024 23:33

@OnLockdown I couldn’t believe Philippine was 61, she has it all going on. So chic.

AppropriateAdult · 09/12/2024 23:36

Anotherparkingthread · 09/12/2024 21:37

I think these threads are awfully smug and self congratulatory. Everybody circle jerking how morally superior they are because they haven't caved in to societal pressures to stay youthful and attractive.

Frankly, nobody else's face is in of our business. And if you get off on putting other women down you have caved to entirely different societal pressures and are not the feminist you believe yourself to be.

I don't think that's it. The point is that, in their quest to look 'youthful and attractive', these high-profile women are being sold a lie. Courtney Cox now says openly that she thinks she went a bit mad with cosmetic surgery and treatments, and finds it hard to look at photos of herself from that time.

I think faces are such an integral part of how we respond to other people on a human level that there can be an instinctive revulsion when looking at someone who's had a lot of 'work' done - it's genuinely hard to look at, just to take one example, Lindsey Lohan now when you remember what she used to look like. Someone simply getting older, and that change being visible in their face, is a completely different thing.

ThatTealViewer · 09/12/2024 23:36

I was just talking about this the other day. All of the above only really applies to white celebs. I can’t think of any Black or Asian actresses who don’t look fantastic (for their age and in general). Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Michelle Yeoh…all astonishingly beautiful women who have just stayed astonishingly beautiful, possibly with the odd tasteful tweak and/or lift.

hopelessmary · 09/12/2024 23:42

I think it's to do with the pressure of the industry they're in. They don't live in the real world and their 'look' is what they have relied on to succeed in life. When you're surrounded by top cosmetic surgeons, all your colleagues in the same industry are doing it and you know your career depends on your look, and you have millions to do it, it's hard not to get sucked in. There is probably all sorts of pressures from their agents too.

Isn't that because"Black don't crack"?

User14March · 09/12/2024 23:47

@AppropriateAdult I think it used to be the case that a certain obvious look in surgery implied some status, wealth. Some liked it just like some like OTT eyelashes & huge overinflated lips. It’s a look.

They say Lindsay Lohan has had a new generation type facelift. Subtlety in facial aesthetics is now increasingly ‘in’. I imagine the work will only get better & one day we’ll treat ageing like a disease with ££ & shots.

I know a couple of women who have had facelifts in Australia, one, looks incredible & at 65 she could pass for 40. She’s very athletic & this helps with result. Also it’s down to the quality of her glowing skin. The other is around 80 & looks superficially late 50s/60s & whilst the ‘work’ objectively fantastic she’s otherwise clearly an ‘old’ woman & it looks jarring. Her husband now looks much older next to her too.

Gillian Anderson - def no sagging there & she’s known for her jawline.

ellyo · 09/12/2024 23:49

Not just women though. Ryan Reynolds' aesthetic work makes him look so strange - like he's gone both forward and back in time. He'd look so much lovelier with some natural aging lines and wrinkles
