Adult child has to make their bed before going to work

It is my parents house so I follow their rules and I have no intention of bringing this up.

I am 24 and live with my parents, it is a house rule that I have to make my bed before going to work.

Is this a silly rule or setting a good example?

Both. At the same time

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/12/2024 17:43

It’s a good rule but you should air it while you have breakfast.

Mrsttcno1 · 09/12/2024 17:43

Yeah I agree with previous poster, it’s silly but it’s also their house and therefore their rules

WhoPutTheBomp · 09/12/2024 17:44

What would happen if you didn't, and how would your parents know?

GreenEggs483 · 09/12/2024 17:44

What's so silly about making your bed in the morning?

tulippa · 09/12/2024 17:44

Why wouldn't you make your bed? You're a grown-up.

TriangleLight · 09/12/2024 17:44

How would they know? They shouldn’t be in your room

Ponoka7 · 09/12/2024 17:45

No it's ultra controlling. A lot of parents don't seem to move on and see their young adult children as having the right to autonomy and to be treated as an equal adult. Are they over bearing in other ways?

lakesiders · 09/12/2024 17:45

How would they know? I don't tend to go in my adult children's bedrooms. I certainly wouldn't check to see if a bed has been made. They change their own sheets so it's upto them.

GCAcademic · 09/12/2024 17:45

When else would you make your bed if not in the morning?

Havalona · 09/12/2024 17:46

When else would you make your bed if not in the morning?

Like me, before I hop into it at night 😊

AnyoneSomeone · 09/12/2024 17:46

How do they know? Do they inspect your room every day?

Soonenough · 09/12/2024 17:46

Not much to ask you to do . It is a basic of good mental health. Get up , get dressed , get out , make your bed too. Doesn't look so messy and nice for you to come home to.

Iloveeverycat · 09/12/2024 17:47

Do they have OCD what do you mean by make the bed if you have a duvet you just Cover the bed with it.

2Sensitive · 09/12/2024 17:47

A bed should be made, literally takes 2 seconds.

MondayTueWed · 09/12/2024 17:47

I never went into my kids' bedrooms. I only had one rule which was if the smell of their bedroom started to seep into the hall then I'd go in and bin everything!! ;)

However your parents are different so it's their house, their rules!

Yes let it air all day then make it before the pre bed shower

Donkeyfromshrek · 09/12/2024 17:48

It does seem ridiculous. It is not a rule I would insist on but I guess it is the price you pay for living there.

Teenagerantruns · 09/12/2024 17:48

It's a stupid rule, l lived with adult children on and off for many years, l didn't go into thier rooms. I did have the whole, stop leaving coffee cups in your room until they turn mouldy rule.
I presume you paying rent so it's your room.
ETA I'm 58 and haven't made our bed yet today

HoppityBun · 09/12/2024 17:48

It’s your room and how the bedclothes are arranged is up to you. Personally, I can’t bear a bed being made unless it’s had time to air; to me that’s gross

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/12/2024 17:49

I think it’s a silly rule and wouldn’t be following it myself. I’m an adult I decide about my bed! And how would they know anyway, why would they be in your room? If it doesn’t bother you then great, crack on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/12/2024 17:49

IMO the bed should air for at least an hour before making it.

In any case I would certainly dislike such rules for a 24 year old. Would it really affect anyone else if you left the bed to air until you got home?

SqueamishHamish · 09/12/2024 17:49

Just be tidy. Make your bed, put away your clothes, open the window a little to air the room. It's their house, I would follow their rules (and ps my twelve year old knows to make his bed).

Porcuporpoise · 09/12/2024 17:50

It's a fairly small compromise as compromises go. Living with other people always requires some compromise.

Iloveeverycat · 09/12/2024 17:50

What happens if your door is closed do they go and inspect it. That's a bit odd.
